A dream lens for landscape photographers!

This lens hold on to contrast in back lid subjects so much better. I thought it would be heavier until I held it. Surprisingly light! I attached some sample images to see. The lens gets insanely good at 18mm also. I would recommend that you buy either from B&H or a local store that is good with exchanges. I had to exchange my first copy since it had an add AF pulsing issue and had decentering issue with images being softer on the right side. No lens is perfect but I would hope sony would do better at this for this price range. Still at the end of the day when you shoot with this lens, it is an absolute delightful experience that gave me the best images I've shot in many years. Happy shooting!Super highly recommended!

Absolutely Fantastic!

I purchased the lens as to go to landscape & astrophotography lens. It does not disappoint! I have the Sony Alpha 71V and I have made 20 X 24 prints showing very sharp and crisp corners. Stars show as round dots. Superb astrophotography lens. The lens was very expensive but when considering that it is also a superb landscape lens and serves my uses well, it was a wise purchase. I will not need to expand to purchase Sony's wide angle primes. This lens fills the bill well.

Great lens from a great rental company!
5 July 2023

This was my 2nd rental from lensrentals. I rented a Sony 12-24mm GM for landscape shots while in Banff. Needed all 12 mm to capture only a fraction of the beauty that comes from Banff. The rental process was easy. The lens arrived a few days early; drop-off was just as easy. I was still away on my trip when the date of return occurred. I just broke down the original box and brought it with me in my luggage to use for the return shipping.

I think most photographers have been waiting for a lens with these specs for some time. Sony upped the game by creating the first 12-24mm f/2.8 lens EVER. I was initially a little worried about distortion and vignetting with such a wide lens, but they're both actually pretty minimal even wide open at 12mm.It should come as no surprise that this lens produces top image quality given that it's part of Sony's G Master lineup. Images are impressively sharp wide open at f/2.8 and obviously sharpness increases a bit by stopping down.Sony's new Nano AR II coating does an amazing job at removing ghosting and flares when shooting in difficult lighting. There are very few lens imperfections; stars are sharp white dots from center to corners, which made me a very happy astro shooter. It's pretty incredible to be able to use a 20 second shutter speed without seeing any star trails. As a Sony Alpha Imaging Collective Member, I've been fortunate enough to use just about every G Master lens created, and this has become one of my favorites. Overall it completes my Sony G Master zoom trio from 12mm-200mm, and I highly recommend it if you're in the market for a fast, wide zoom.

I'm on the Sony bandwagon with my A7RIV and A7SIII. I'm that super picky guy who wants the lens that does it all. I run a marketing company and make lots of video content, but I also do time-lapses, landscapes, cityscapes, and astrophotography. I don't mind paying more for value, but it was really hard for me to justify spending this much.I didn't. I spent a few weeks buying other lenses and researching all the options I had available for Full-Frame E-Mount Cameras like mine.I tried the Rokinons, Meikes, Laowa Zero-D 12mm, and 11mm options, and after reaching the limitations of all of these, decided to just buy the GM 12-24mm lens and do my due diligence by making a comparison for myself. There was no comparison. This thing takes their lunch money! There is nothing else on the market like it, and it has been dubbed by the pros as the GoldieLox Lens because of all the boxes it checks! It's the best of the best. Most of the other options I had meant 100% manual controls, which aren't a dealbreaker but do introduce limitations, especially with time-lapses during dynamic changes. But with the GM12-24, all the usual features and Eye-AF work together. There are plenty of videos online about exactly why, but most of the other lenses I tried still had a slightly distorted feel even when corrected in Lightroom (if they even had profiles available). In many cases, I would have to sharpen corners, fix vignetting issues, and mess with perspectives.Again, not a deal-breaker for me, but when you start factoring in the quality of the images, ease of use, easy integration, and just the overall experience after testing every other viable option, I'm at peace with it! Plus, life is short, you only live once. Buy the lens!

The go-to for up-close

Narrow lenses are for shooting from far away, while wide lenses are for getting up close, and the 12-24 GM allows you to really get up close and personal, yet still make high-quality images.I shoot video with this lens typically 2-4 ft away from my subject, and having the zoom allows me to adjust in that range to get what I want into the shot, while the perspective gives the viewer the feeling of being part of the action rather than just observing it from afar. Even though I'm usually focusing manually, having the ability to autofocus on Sony cameras with Sony lenses like this one allows for quickly resetting focus at the beginning of a shot, or turning AF on in specific scenarios with a lot of movement. The image quality throughout the zoom and focus range is ... MoreNarrow lenses are for shooting from far away, while wide lenses are for getting up close, and the 12-24 GM allows you to really get up close and personal, yet still make high-quality images.I shoot video with this lens typically 2-4 ft away from my subject, and having the zoom allows me to adjust in that range to get what I want into the shot, while the perspective gives the viewer the feeling of being part of the action rather than just observing it from afar. Like other photo-centric GM lenses that prioritize image quality over video characteristics, there is noticeable focus breathing, but in my opinion it's a small price to pay for wide-angle zoom image quality this good, while being able to melt away the background with the bokeh of 2.8 aperture.Though the lens does not have OSS built in, I find that the active camera stabilization of the A7S3 is more than adequate for handheld use with a lens as wide as this one. I can hold the camera with one hand for that matter without introducing any noticeable shake (though not for too long because this is a relatively heavy lens). The lens is relatively expensive, but you get what you pay for - one look at the huge, bulbous front element and you'll understand why this lens costs what it does - and though I wouldn't consider it a complete replacement for cine lenses even with handheld use due to the aforementioned focus breathing, even at the current MSRP it's still much cheaper than anything remotely similar in the Sony cinema lens lineup, and unless you're producing a feature film the focus breathing will probably be acceptable. If you shoot from up-close, and/or shoot landscapes/architecture, this is probably the lens you want. Overall 5 stars.

The first full-frame 12-24mm f/2.8 lens ever, it not only outstrips the competition in focal length and aperture, but comes in significantly lighter than any similar lens on the market. This lens is a true marvel of optical engineering, and I hope this is an indicator that future lens releases will continue down this path.My first thought when I heard 12mm at f/2.8 was horrible vignette? and I'm very pleased to announce that's not the case. There is some vignette, sure, just about universal for lenses at this focal length, but it's both manageable and palatable as well as quickly dispatched by stopping down. The lens is fantastically sharp, even wide open. The extreme aspherical elements create beautiful, rectilinear image projections with nearly no distortion at all, and the pixel stretching in the corners (unavoidable with rectilinear lenses) to me looks like an artistic benefit rather than a detraction. The Sony Nano AR coating proves again to be an incredible advancement, and you can see in my 6th photo above that even shooting directly into the sun there is almost no flare or ghosting at all. There are dozens of detailed reviews online so I won't go too deep into the technical details here on Amazon, but the real reason you're here reading reviews is to figure out if this is a lens you want to buy. I'm happy to tell you that yes, you do. If you fancy yourself a fan of wide-angle lenses for landscapes, astro, adventure, or action photography then this is an absolute must have for your quiver.

Truly staggering lens

Optically this lens is incredible. It benefits from corner focusing at 12mm due to field curvature, but focused carefully, this lens is pretty sharp corner to corner at all focal lengths. It beats my 14mm GM with both lenses set at 14mm & f2.8, in terms of average sharpness across the whole frame. The prime wins for central sharpness, but has stronger field curvature. I've also compared this to 2 copies of the 24mm GM, and with the 24mm and 12-24 (set at 24mm and f2.8 as well as f4), the zoom outperforms the prime for average sharpness across the frame. That 24mm prime is known for impressive sharpness, and this zoom beats both of the copies I've had of the 24mm. It really is that good.Very little CA, moderate vignette. My main complaint isn't about the optics, but is about what I'm assuming is software/firmware. The 12-24mm attached to my A7Riv has a red/magenta ring baked into the raws. It's pretty strong at 12mm, but not too bad by 14mm. It does not do this on my A1, and others have reported that covering up the lens contacts prevents the rings being baked into the raws with other bodies. Fix that, and it'll be perfect on all bodies (I repeat, the problem is absent on my A1, but this lens and others have the red/magenta ring baked in with my A7Riv).
