I've rented various Sony lenses to shoot family and our pets, and purchased a few GM Lenses. I have to say that of all, I have only had the wow factor with this lens. The colors, the blur, the sharpness, the buttery beautifulness. Yes it's expensive, but if we're advised to live in the moment, this is the best way to capture those and keep them forever. In terms of Auto Focus for action shots like our running dogs, Im not sure it's the best. Either that, or my a7R4 or a73 needs to be replaced by the a9. Who knows. But if you are capturing objects that require no kore than 1/1000s, you are Golden. My favorite lens by far. You will not regret buying it. If you do, contact me I'll buy it from you so I can have 2 :)

Beware the aperture ring on an otherwise great lens

Optically and for the AF, this lens is superb. But for a rental, it can be a trap. The aperture ring does not lock, and it is fairly easy to move it one click over from “A” to F/22. You have now overridden the aperture you set with the thumb wheel (or front wheel). My F/2.2 became F/22, and numerous shots were ruined.Others on forums suggest adhesive tape to prevent this. However an otherwise perfect $2,000 lens should not need a Bandaid. Sony, please give us a lock on the ring or a software setting to disable it.

This lens is truly special in a good way. It’s very sharp yet still provides a beautiful and soft bokeh, which isn’t always the case with lots of other lenses. Also the rendering this lens gives is just stunning! On top of all that the AF is very fast, precise and reliable, and even quite.Overall this is probably the best portrait lens I’ve ever used. And it’s more versatile than I originally thought it would be, not only can it be used for portraits (you need some distance), but also for street photography and sport and pet photography, as long as the subject isn’t too far away like with wildlife.Overall this lens is highly recommended from my point of view.

TL;DR - Tack sharp images, buttery bokeh and fast focus.I really like the size and weight, it's right in line with the 24 and 35 GM. My previous 50 1.4 was a tank and really made the camera feel unbalanced. It's one of those things you just deal with in your quest for better photos until you get the same quality without the hassle, then there is no turning back. It may only have two focus motors, but I've not felt that it is slow or should have 4 motors like the 1.2. In fact, my keeper rate has increased dramatically. With my previous 1.4 lens I would have 1-2 out of every 10 images with missed focus. This new GM lens has moved the goal post andnow it's more like 1 miss out of every 25 images. I've actually had a shoot with zero missed focus shots from this ... MoreTL;DR - Tack sharp images, buttery bokeh and fast focus.I really like the size and weight, it's right in line with the 24 and 35 GM. If youare considering this lens as an upgrade to an existing 50mm or possibly as a first prime just do it. :) Get this one and you won't be disappointed. Attached are some prom photos shot at 1.4 for reference.

It is difficult to take a bad picture with this lens

At 1.1 lbs./516g, this fast lens is relatively light and balances very nicely on my Sony A7R IV. Wide open at f1.4, sharpness and contrast are excellent from the center through the midpoints while only falling off slightly in the corners. Full sensor resolution, including the corners, then gradually increase step by step until the optimum range of f5.6-f11, only falling off afterwards due to diffraction. Attached is a downsized (due to B&H requirements) chart showing my resolution tests with 100% crops of the top left corner, mid top left, center, mid top right and top right corner comparing f1.4 to f5.6.I have no complaints about this lens. For everyday images, including landscapes, street photography, small groups of people, vacations, it just makes it very hard ... MoreAt 1.1 lbs./516g, this fast lens is relatively light and balances very nicely on my Sony A7R IV. For everyday images, including landscapes, street photography, small groups of people, vacations, it just makes it very hard to take a bad picture with it. In most cases it also works very well in the studio for or larger portraits. A small drawback however due to its sharpness can be in headshots where the rendering in some cases, particularly for females, can be a little too clinical. But not really too bad at all since that can easily be taken care of in Photoshop.I've waited a long time to add a 50mm normal lens to my Sony kit. After using this lens for two weeks, I'm glad I waited.

Love it!
26 April 2023

One day with this lens and it is already providing exceptional image quality and versatility. The lens is a not too heavy, but it feels solid and well-built in the hand. The autofocus is fast and accurate, and the lens is incredibly sharp, even at wide apertures. The bokeh is smooth and buttery, making it perfect for portrait photography. So far, the lens has performed well in low-light situations. The only downside to this lens is the high price, but you definitely get what you pay for in terms of quality and performance. Plus, its relatively cheaper than most other G Master lenses. Overall, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 is an excellent choice for photographers who demand the very best in image quality and performance.

Misunderstood masterpiece

Very premium lens that's misunderstood by many users. It's often incorrectly compared to the 70 - 200 GM II.Firstly this is first and foremost a portrait lens, that means it requires you to find and know who or what your subject is in order to take beautiful pictures. It can work as a semi-telephoto by cropping to around 200 mm - it can get macro like photos too but it's not really suited for that. Prime lense means that you will have to move around and use your feet to get the right and correct shot, so thinking is a lot more important which prevents you from becoming lazy with just a zoom. Don't get me wrong the zoom has its place and if you need the inbetween focal lengths or each just get the GM II. Don't get me wrong the zoom has its place and if you need the inbetween focal lengths or each just get the GM II. This compared to the GM II is akin to optical magic being compared to versatility.I think this lens is optically perfect and incredibly pin sharp! The F1.8 also makes it very suitable for nightscape or cityscape photography. The weight might be a little heavy but the size is also shorter than 70 - 200 GM II, which if taken out might annoy the public around you. Also F1.8 is much better for low light than F2.8, big low light capability gap let's not ignore it.To conclude I've used the 135mm F1.8G for a short amount of time and Sony has been good to me, they've price matched really well! I don't ever want to sell this lens, I love it. Only thing I wish it had was optical stabilization which isn't there. You can hand hold the shots or use a tripod or gimbal. With the hand held shots you need to use camera inbody stabilization and it will work decent enough. With gimbal you need a really normal sized one not compact.Postscript - people compare this to the 85mm F1.4 GM, and that lens is slightly better under low light but honestly 1.8 is a proven enough low light aperture. The 135 mm is monumentally sharper than the 85mm 1.4 GM. You could also opt to get the 50mm F1.2 GM but that lens hasn't got great reach, although it makes really aesthetically beautiful pictures. 100mm F2.8 GM is not as good as low light nor does it have the nice reach of this lens.At the end it will really depend on your kit and what lenses you already have, will this particular one compliment your work? In my case hands down it's unquestionably the best lens I've owned and my favorite! It simply wows people when you show them even the most average of pictures, it's incredibly impressive!

Rent it now. And rent it again.
9 November 2022

First of all, Lensrentals made this process perfect easy. This was my first time using a lens longer than 55mm and it was a dream. Used it for a video project at a conference and also squeezed in two photo shoots with it. Unreal. It was everything and more than I was hoping it would be. Incredibly sharp and very fast at focusing photos, little slow at times finding focus for video but I was pushing it hard with focusing far then close up very quickly. Worked great on a gimbal as well. Helped build the biceps if ya know what I mean. The photos I took with this turned out soooo dreamy. The lens was solid, well built, felt good and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent it again.

The perfect concert hall lens!
20 November 2021

I work for a nonprofit that puts on classical chamber ensemble concerts in a venue that seats about 700. There is always a need for great photos of the performance (to help with promotion) but we cant always hire a photographer. Which suits me just fine because I get an excuse to use my Sony A7C at work. ^_^ Getting good shots in a dark concert hall from all the way in the back (so as not to block anyone's view) is a tall order. My wider lenses required to much cropping of photos afterwards, with so so results. I gave this beast a try, and the verdict is its... PERFECT. With my back to the wall, I could fit all 5 performers, stage florals, and our projected logo in each shot. No need to annoy attendees by ducking in front of them and running away afterwards. Every shot was fantastically sharp, and the low Fstop allowed me to keep things bright and freeze their movement without relying on high ISO. I did say it was a beast because it weighs more than my camera with a smaller lens attached. The weight was not a problem for me though, because I as able to get perfect shots while seated! Gonna rent this one for every concert.

This lens is truly amazing. Incredibly sharp. Ultra-fast, precise focusing, even at f1.8. Subjects pop out of the background with a three-dimensional look. I've bought two of these. It is, without question, my favorite lens.A few notes:* I got a Hoya polarizer stuck on one of them. The polarizer cross threaded with the filter ring on the front of the lens. Removing it required a very expensive repair.* The lens is well balanced, and handles very well, on an A7Riii, however it is definitely a heavy lens. I definitely can not use this lens comfortably for as long as I can my smaller and lighter lenses.
