But, it's only in the corners so some planning and cropping could address this depending on what you're shooting.

I was so excited to see what Sony had created here. It is a compact full frame 2.8 standard zoom that complements my a7cii wonderfully AND is as small as some of the 1.4 primes! Everything seems great on paper, but when I look at the final images, I cannot see beyond the visible in camera corrections for the very strong distortion that is present at all focal lengths. With the corrections on, many parts of the image have a strange smudginess to them, that left me rubbing my eyes. When I turned the corrections off, the sharpness increased dramatically throughout the frame, but the distortion is trending towards fisheye effect. I think this is the key to getting both great bokeh and professional looking photos or videos. This lens also has great close up performance. It can focus at 7.09” at 24mm. This is great if you do unboxings, tech reviews, and other tabletop videography/photography. There is a ring on the lens that allows you to adjust the aperture quickly, this also frees up one of your dials on the camera. There is also a switch that allows the aperture ring to click or be smooth.A lens hood is included which is a bonus for shooting video/pictures in direct sunlight. A lens hood also helps keep dust and other things off of your lens. One thing I found odd is that the lens is fully extended at 24mm and the shortest at 50mm. I am used to shooting on Canon and I am new to Sony so this might be a Sony thing.One of the most important things when it comes to a lens is image quality. This lens has great image quality. Another great advantage of an F2.8 lens is that it has great low light quality. The 11-blade circular aperture makes the bokeh crisp and the images clear. Although it does not have built-in image stabilization, cameras such as my A7 iii have built in stabilization. Combined with this fast aperture lens, you can shoot smooth handheld footage as long as it is at a wider focal length.Overall, this is a great lens that has become my most use lens. This is a perfect all around lens especially if you have to choose only one. This is also a great travel lens because it is a great do it all lens. A 2.8 aperture lens will give you just about the best bokeh you can get without switching to a prime lens.

I have used this camera now for a week paired with my Sony Alpha 7R III and luckily this lens arrived just before my trip to Colorado for some leaf peeping on the shoulder season. As I did multiple half day hikes to get the shots I wanted, having this light weight FE 24-50mm lens was wonderful. Coming in just shy of one pound, I never felt bogged down by the weight as I do sometimes with my much larger (and heavier) Sony FE 24-70 G master lens (an awesome lens by the way). I was amazed actually that when I returned home and viewed the images in my photo software, that 99 percent of the images were without motion artifact or blur. I am guessing the few bad ones were operator error on my part. I was also quite impressed with the close up shots of the flowers I took at 24mm – they were all in focus and had a nice background blur that I was aiming for with the proper camera settings. While I love my FE 24-70 G Master, this lens will have an equal place in my arsenal of lenses, especially when I need something lighter for a days shoot. I am definitely impressed with this offering from Sony and I recommend it highly.
I have been testing the Sony 24-50mm f2.8 G against my Zeiss Batis primes: 40mm f2 and 25mm f2. So far, I have found them to be equal in sharpness. I cannot tell any discernable difference. Setting the Sony to 40mm and f2.8, it shows more vignetting than the Zeiss. This vignetting does not fully clear until f5.6. At 24mm, the vignetting clears by f4. In contrast, the Batis 40mm and 25mm have very slight vignetting at f2.8 and clear completely at f4. I did the same comparison with the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and found the same result. Actually, I see a very, very slight vignette even at f5.6 on the Sony when set to 50mm. Generally speaking, from f5.6 to f11, the image quality produced by all of these lenses is identical. I am amazed how sharp and very nice detail it shows on stills.The FE 24-50mm lens is compact (74.8mm x 92.3mm) and lightweight (440 g.) so I am taking it to my next trip in a month because I am planning on taking pictures all day long for a couple of weeks. I’ve taken it out for a few days now and I am happy with it. I also like that the lens is dust and splash resistant so it is something less to worry about.The autofocus on the lens is exceptional; it does great on tracking while doing it fast and quietly.And the lens is also great for capturing up to 4k videos while it supports different functions depending on the camera. The lens can be used in manual and autofocus mode with a simple switch.Overall, the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens is a great lens for photographers looking for a compact, high-performance standard zoom lens. Its excellent optical performance, build quality, and handling make it a great addition to any photographer’s equipment.
This Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 zoom lens is a welcome addition to the collection of lenses for my Sony camera and will likely become my go-to lens for local music shows, portraits, and product photography. The focal range is great because it’s wide enough for group shots, and close enough for portraits and product shots. The movie drive-in is a very low-light scenario so I’ll share a wide photo I took of all the cars in the lot in front of the big screen. The sky was actually much darker in real life than what the photo shows and I attribute this to the 12800 ISO - the Sony a7 iv and 24-50mm lens made a great pairing and really allowed all the light to come through at a lower shutter speed (0.3 sec for the night shot of the drive-in).2. I took some self-portraits in my home studio with 3 lights: a key light, a fill light, and a color light for the background. The camera picked up wonderful colors and the lens was super sharp, especially when I purposefully pulled focus to my eyes. My studio space is very small so I got the best results when I was around 37mm. This is when I found the focus breathing while trying to find myself again as the subject, but I will say this is a challenge I’ve faced before when I’m working solo as the photographer and model. It was much easier to get the auto-focus to work quickly when I was photographing others.3. The flower garden photos were taken around 6pm, so the sun was still out. I found the 2.8 aperture to offer a very tight field of view and a nice blurred background. I was able to open the aperture to get less blur when needed. I thought it offered great focus points.I mostly shot stills with this lens, but I did shoot some video and I noticed that the auto-focus, while good at tracking, felt a little “breathy”. With subject movement, sometimes it took a second to refocus on faces again. I often found myself clicking on my face in the display to make sure it focused on my eyes when taking self-portraits. In my use-case, I ended up using my phone as a remote/monitor for the Sony a7 iv and was able to focus better that way because without it, the lens would lock focus on my face before I was in place for the photo.The lens itself is comfortable to use. It’s easy to switch between manual and auto focus, and the 3 rings for focus, zoom, and aperture are really smooth. The aperture ring has a switch to turn the click on and off in case you’re needing the quietest experience possible for filming. For stills, I use the zoom and focus rings and tend to leave the aperture ring on auto to change the f-stop in-camera.The Sony a7 iv is heavier than the a6500, but even with a beefier body, this lens is actually pretty lightweight and compact. I’m very much looking forward to taking this lens out on nature walks in the fall. I usually shoot with a 70-200mm (heavy), but I’ve been wanting a smaller zoom lens so the 24-50mm seemed like a great choice and it feels pretty light in my hand, especially paired with the a6500.I would have liked for this lens to have a stabilization feature, so when I’m filming on the move I’ll have to rely on the camera’s stabilization. In my short time with this lens, I filmed on a tripod so all my shots were stable.Overall, I’m very happy to have this Sony G standard 24-50mm lens. I will definitely be using this lens regularly on my Sony camera because it’s much easier having a zoom lens than switching between my 16mm and 30mm primes. I do like having my primes, but a zoom lens is just so much more convenient and having the quality of a Sony is perfect for my needs as a content creator.

I have many Sony GM prime and zoom lenses, but purchased this G lens for a trip to Africa for a wedding. I wasn’t going on safari, so did not need a lot of big lenses. In fact I needed to travel light, but keep low-light capability and versatile focal lengths. This lens was perfect—allowed me to shoot both wide angle and portraits. I own the 24-70mm GM v2, but definitely preferred this lighter version on this trip. It is sharp and focuses as fast as my GM lenses. I took some solid photos while riding in the car—lens showed its ability to lock on and keep focus. It is essentially a baby GM. So far, there is nothing that I don’t like about the lens. I am very happy with it and I plan to use it as my go-to walk-around travel lens going forward.

I own a variety of 50mm prime lenses, including the Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G Lens and the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.2.One of the things that caught my eye of this lens is that, by default, it sits on the 50mm side of the zoom, opposite to most of the other zoom lenses, which by default sit on the wider side. When I’m out in the streets hunting for new images, many times I wished to have the chance of rapidly changing to the other focal lenses I use, 35mm and 24mm, to not miss a nice shot. But with a prime lens, changing to another lens takes enough time to miss the shot anyway.Also, carrying a heavy, big sized 24-70 is not an option, since the weight and the size make it an issue after hours in the streets.Enters the Sony ... If you need a wider aperture, you’ll always have the prime lenses.With a solid construction, outstanding image performance, and fast autofocus, all of it almost matching a GM lens, the Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens is a no brainer for those who need a nifty-fifty for their specific fields, with the added versatility of zooming out to 24mm, making it an almost perfect walk-around.
