This is an amazing lens for the price.The image quality is great even wide open at f1.8, even though there is some purple fringing in high contrast scenes but it's not that bad.Autofocus is also very fast and consistent on my A7 IV, no issues whatsoever (used with Continuous Autofocus, tracking is also keeping up with the camera very well).Build quality is also very nice, it's made of metal, it's slightly on the heavy side but you can feel it's built well. The lens hood is made of plastic though and feels cheap, however it locks in very well (compared to the very loose lens hood of my Sigma 30mm DC DN).The performance on APS-C is also very good, tested it on my A6000 and apart from the fact that it's ~130mm equivalent, it works great, no issues.

Coming from a cropped sensor Fujifilm XT4 and previously owning their amazing XF56 f1.2, I wanted sth similar as my first full frame lens without breaking the bank. After some research and YouTube videos, I decided to go for the Sony 85mm f1.8 and boy am I happy! This is a relatively compact and very light lens which you can carry all day and the image quality is excellent even wide open. It is a versatile focal lens in that if you know how to work your composition, it can be used not only for portraits, but also street and landscape photography. Lens has a vignette flare on bottom of frame when used in strong back lit situations.I sent the lens in for repair, the repair shop had it for two weeks the first time, they could not replicate flare. Second time in the shop for 7weeks. Still couldn't replicate, but they never took it outside in the sunlight to test.In between the two trips to the shop, Sony sent a loan lens for me to compare. My lens failed, the loaner did not.Finally Sony offered an exchange. Waiting on delivery today.
I've used the Batis f/1.8 version of this lens, and honestly the two are neck and neck. Sure you do sacrifice a little on build quality vs the Batis, but for half the price I couldn't justify it. I opted for this over a faster lens because the amount of blur for photos torso and up is more than enough, and the bokeh is very, very pleasing. Additionally, I've borrowed/rented the 85mm 1.4 GM and while that lens is great - my clients and I tend to gravitate towards the photos where the backgrounds aren't entirely obliterated - so I couldn't justify spending another $1300 for that lens. Especially considering I also have the 135mm.I use this lens on both the A7R3a and A7S3. It can definitely hold up with the high MP, and it tracks focus nicely when used for video.
I use this lens for Wedding video & Couples/Solo photography, and it is definitely my favorite!Yes, you can find other lenses that will offer you sharper images, but usually those are double the price, the size and of course the weight!For practical purposes it is a great lens, it will give you a beautiful and creamy bokeh, the autofocus is very fast and very silent, for pics and video, chromatic aberration at 1.8 it is noticeable for an expert eye, vignetting is way better than I expected, the fabrication quality is good, the focus ring is smooth.It is a no-brainer.
Ever since I got the 85 mm, I haven't been able to put it down for my portrait sessions. I also have a 50 mm and Tampon 28-75 mm but I cannot get over the 85 mm and the beautiful portraits it is able to take. The bokeh is beautiful and it's sharp too. At first I thought it would be more limited to just individual portraits since it's a longer focal length than other lenses but I have used it for families and sessions with more than a few people. It's been almost three years now and I have used it for 85-90% of my sessions. Highly recommend for those that love to do portraits. You won't regret it. :)

Comparing each stop beginning at F/2.8, though, I noticed that my 70-200 lens and the Sony 85mm lens were neck in neck and the only difference was when I performed a few head shots, at which point the winner was my 70-200 lens but the differences were so minuscule, I'm talking about hair texture and skin pores being slightly more pronounced. Inanimate objects appeared to be the same. Additionally, the color saturation appeared to be the same with both lenses.So, for those who have a 70-200mm lens, but do not want to carry around a 3.5 pound lens while shooting or for those who are on a budget and want something sharp, light weight and portable, then this lens is ideal.
