I occasionally do portraiture and my primary lens is an 85mm f1.4, but sometimes I don't have the space or I need something a bit wider. I had been shooting the 55mmf1.8 and liked the results ok, but it had nothing like the magic of the 85 GM. I got the 50 GM to fill the gap and I've been very pleased with hit. It's sharp wide open, has a great look, focuses blisteringly fast and is smaller and lighter than one might expect.

Bought the 50mm f1.4 some time back, to use with an Alpha A77. Pleased with it's performance as a fast prime, in combo with the 77. I have now switched to an A7Rll (fantastic camera) and traded most of my old lenses for EF's, but kept the 50mm F1.4 to use with a LA-EA4 adaptor, an glad that I did. It has proven remarkably sharp, with the bokeh that I have always craved since changing to digital cameras. It produces a slightly soft image at F1.4, but by F2 and higher the image is great. Of course, at the larger apertures, accurate focus is critical, due to the narrow depth of field.A first rate lens, capable of producing very pleasing shots.

I have been looking for this lens for a while, and it has always been expensive. There is something strange about this lens that it always stays at the same price all across the world, whether in shops, Sony website, any other websites, and there have never been any real deal on it. In the beginning its price was around $450, and only now recently it dropped to $369. But not a cent less, i.e. you won't find it at $359.9 anywhere doesn't matter what. This might change in near future, but as per my two year experience on this lens price, it price will stay fixed around the globe and nobody will take a cent off of its price. Any Sony DSLR holder, who knows a little bit about the lenses knows how wonderful this 50mm f/1.4 lens is and why everybody must have this with alpha series cameras if they are serious in taking good pictures. The story goes back to Minolta times, you can read a lot about it on the Internet. This was supposedly the best prime lens from Minolta and famous for its beautiful pictures, specially when it came to portraits (now I am witness of it). I couldn't find a better deal than what this seller offered. The price of the lens was the same, as everywhere else, but I got a lot of goodies with it for free, on top of free shipment. This seller also have many other amazing deals. At one point I was thinking of getting rid of Sony and get all the new Canon stuff, which this seller was offering at an amazing deal of around $1500, for the EOS60D along with six lenses and everything else a photographer would need, (excluding a flash). I'll probably do it in near future. No other seller I saw giving away this much stuff at such an amazing price. Although the free lens case which came with it is very tight for this lens, and seller should consider including a wider lens case if at all. The very first picture from this lens on my Alpha 300 immediately proved that all what I was reading about this lens over last two years was absolutely true. Pictures was much sharper and clearer. Next few days I spent experimenting with this lens and was extremely happy with the results. Because this lens magnifies the image as its focal length is fixed at 50mm, so the kit 18-70 mm lens is not a throw away and is still required for indoor shooting, where 50mm is usually a little too magnified image. Other than that, not all the time keeping lens at f/1.4 is recommended. I have found results are better at f/2.0, and for more things to keep in focus, f/4.0 and about is good setting. However for those special cases where you really need the magic and bukeh of f/1.4, it does its job just wonderful. I also own a Sony flash, which adds a lot to the quality of photos, but now coupled with this lens, now I am able to take much better pictures than before. I hope this seller will maintain its standard, price and quality of service, and I'll definitely will consider him for future camera related purchases, whether for myself or for friends.

TL;DR - Tack sharp images, buttery bokeh and fast focus.I really like the size and weight, it's right in line with the 24 and 35 GM. My previous 50 1.4 was a tank and really made the camera feel unbalanced. It's one of those things you just deal with in your quest for better photos until you get the same quality without the hassle, then there is no turning back. It may only have two focus motors, but I've not felt that it is slow or should have 4 motors like the 1.2. In fact, my keeper rate has increased dramatically. With my previous 1.4 lens I would have 1-2 out of every 10 images with missed focus. This new GM lens has moved the goal post andnow it's more like 1 miss out of every 25 images. I've actually had a shoot with zero missed focus shots from this ... I've actually had a shoot with zero missed focus shots from this lens, just awesome.A YouTuber quoted this as the Goldilocks lens that will be just right for most photographers and I believe he is right. It allows you to step into a 50mm GM lens but not pay the premium price that comes with the 1.2 version. If youare considering this lens as an upgrade to an existing 50mm or possibly as a first prime just do it. :) Get this one and you won't be disappointed. Attached are some prom photos shot at 1.4 for reference.
This is the first GM I own, and I'm in LOVE with it. I own 24-105G and 50.4GM. I use the zoom lens for travel all in one, and 50 for portrait. The aperture is incredible. I can literally do portrait shooting indoor without any special lighting equipment. I've compared 50.2 and 50.4 A LOT before purchasing the product and I hardly could tell the difference between the two. One stop aperture is not significant.
This lens is fabulous, it's light and small enough to go anywhere. This is the only lens that I took on my last trip and it was all I needed. This nifty fifty was hooked to a Sony A7R V so I was able to crop and get just what I wanted in the frame. Beautiful clean low light closeups and crisp landscapes. Excellent choice.
Although this is a "modern" lens, it has no in lens motor, so relies on the screw drive from the camera. Focus is however fairly rapid and perfectly usable as not noisy.Being a smooth surface, it attracts no dust to any grip areas and the hood goes on easily and feels solid once engaged. The quality at f1.4 is acceptable, but sharpness improves at f2.8 in both the centre and corners. Compared to the Zeiss SSM lens, it it far more compact and a lot lighter, but certainly not as sharp. The bonus is that this lens costs about one third of the cost of the Zeiss.Recommended for A-mount users of full frame cameras, such as the A99, as a general walkabout lens.
This lens is awe-inspiringly good. It is blisteringly sharp wide-open, and only gets better stopped down. I almost can't believe the amount of detail captured by this lens! The bokeh is smooth and dreamy. The contrast is perfect. Autofocus is fast and responsive. And there's a total lack of any artifacts like chromatic aberration, strong vignetting, etc.For reference, I own three other GM lenses - the 85mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4, and 14mm f1.8 - all of which are stellar. But even in comparison with them, this lens feels slightly more refined. It just oozes quality in every way. I also have the Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4, which has its own strengths (wonderful image character, very sharp in the center of the frame, small size and light weight compared to Sony lenses), but ... I also have the Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4, which has its own strengths (wonderful image character, very sharp in the center of the frame, small size and light weight compared to Sony lenses), but can't compete on a general optical level with this Sony masterpiece. Before buying this, I considered the Sony GM 50mm f1.4, which is smaller and cheaper. While an amazing lens itself, I concluded that the f1.2 lens was arguably better, for a few reasons: 1) the f1.2 aperture really does produce a more dreamy look than the f1.4 lens in my opinion, and is also useful in low light situations; 2) I prefer the moderate contrast of this lens versus the more contrasty, punchy look of the f1.4; and 3) I simply get the impression that this lens is slightly better in a number of ways than the f1.4 - sharpness, flaring, autofocus speed among them. All in all, I don't think you can go wrong with either lens, but while a lighter lens is welcome and it's always nice to save money, I can't help but think that the f1.2 is the overall better lens.Anyway, if you can afford it and have a love for the 50mm focal length, then you can't go wrong with this lens, it's surely one of the greatest 50mm lenses ever made and a wonderful tool in your photography arsenal.
Sony does it again with another stellar 50mm! It's size, rendering, and autofocus are next level. My collection of sony glass keeps growing. The 40mm, 70 -200mm, and now the 50mm f/1.4. I bought the fifty to shoot more at night with my A1. I tend to use my sony gear more and more vs Leica SL2S. Sony really just nailed it period. Also I'm blown away at how compact and light my gear is including this new 50mm just feels right!
This is as good as it gets. Very solidly built lens. Crisp photos with amazing bokeh. Relatively light and compact. Very satisfied.
