Have been a photographer for over 50 years and Sony Alpha convert for 11. I was let down with delivery of 24-70 GM and bought this instead. I was taking photos at my son's wedding with a bagful of lenses and didn't take it off the body. It has a perfect range of zoom, takes crystal sharp images and is small and balanced with the A1. I'm beginning to think now that with the image quality at higher ISO, the benefit of F2.8 vs F4 is almost non-existent with an appreciable weight disadvantage. The quality of build of this G lens is identical to the GMs I have. I cannot praise it more highly

This is the one lens I would take if I could only take one lens to travel. First, it is lightweight at 1.46 lbs. Second, it is a versatile lens with wide-angle and telephoto options to capture most of what you would need when traveling. Third, the optics of this lens minimize chromatic aberration and distortion. Forth, the autofocus capability of this lens is impressive- quick and accurate. Finally, the coating on the exposed glass and the mechanics of the lens help to protect it against the environment. The only limitation I found relates to those who want a lens for video creation. This particular model has noticeable breathing as you try to change focus from minimum to infinity or vice-versa.My favorite lenses for travel:Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GMSony FE ... MoreThis is the one lens I would take if I could only take one lens to travel. Very useful focal range for a general purpose lens. The OSS works well and quite sharp through out the range. My only complaint is: at the price level it's at, which is very similar to the Canon RF L version, the build quality on this lens could be better. The L lenses just have a better quality build to them and they're made in Japan. The Sony somehow just feels cheaper built. If you squeeze the rear part of the Sony lens near the zoom ring, the barrel actually deforms slightly at some parts, due to the softer plastic. The Canon is also plastic, but feels much more solid. My 10+ year old EF lens from Canon is still rock solid as new. I can't speak to the longevity of the Sony version yet, but have a feeling it won't hold up as well as the Canon.

I have been using the 24-105 lens in place of the 28-60 kit lens that came with the a7c camera. It is still small enough to fit in the small photo bag suggested by B&H and not too heavy, and balances well in your hand with the camera. The improvement in the photos is considerable, both in color and resolution. Portraits are great with just the right amount of blurring in the background and I find I can do much more extensive cropping than before. Focusing is faster and effective and closeups look great I didn't expect this level of improvement over the kit lens or my iPhone 14 pro max camera.
I have used this lens for over four years and taken about 30,000 images with it. It is very sharp across the range, the color rendition is great, and the autofocus always is on target. It is sturdy (I tested this in the field), yet not very heavy. It may not be the very best lens at anything, but very good at most things. This still is the best and most versatile all-purpose zoom for Sony FE.This is my favorite travel lens. It has been on four continents. The focal range is perfect for travel, landscape, and documentary photography, but also for family photos and for general photography. I sometimes travel with only this lens because often it is hard to change lenses on the go, and because this lens always gets the job done. The fact that this is only and f/4 lens has never been an issue for me. I have taken many hand-held night shots with this lens at ISO 6400 at 1/15 of a second. This lens has image-stabilization (in contrast to its main competitors), and it works great in tandem with the in-body stabilization of my A7 III. You even can shoot portraits with this lens in a pinch; at 105mm, you get enough compression for a decent bokeh.
I bought this lens with the A7IV camera body having moved from Fujifilm. I never felt that the images from the Fujifilm 16-80 were really sharp, a bit soft, but the images from this lens are really sharp through the focal length. This lens gives me the same focal length that I had but it's in a different league and am really pleased with the images.Would have liked it to be lighter but it feels really balanced on the camera. Will be a great travel lens for my next holiday as I am only taking 1 lens and body, so ideal combination.
I bought this lens with the A73 and then a year later or so had a friend that offered me his 24-70 GM for $1200, which was a great deal since that lens was over $2k at the time. I was expecting the GM to blow it out of the water but after comparing them was very surprised with the results. Comparing both lenses at f/4 the 24-105 is sharper throughout the whole range, even though f/4 is wide open for the 24-105 and a few stops down for the 24-70 where it should be really sharp. I thought maybe I had a not so great copy but I looked at thedigitalpictures charts and the results were almost exactly the same. And sharpness isn't the only advantage, you have significantly more reach, IS, and it's much lighter. Really hard to justify picking the GM over this especially considering how well cameras perform in low light nowadays. And if you wanted comparable bokeh to the GM @ 70mm/2.8 you could just back up with the 24-105 and zoom to 85-105mm at f/4 and it should look similar.
Very beautiful lense, gives a nice amount of ranges and is sharp the whole way through although at 105 I did notice a slight blur on the corners but nothing too obvious. You really have to pixel peep to find anything wrong with this lense IMO. The lense is very high quality and made with premium materials, the downside to this is that its metal body is quite heavy. I found myself not wanting to hold my camera in my hands as often because of the weight and often returned it to my bag because of wrist pain causing me to miss some shots. In the end it’s a great lense but to keep it on all the time for street photography it was a bit heavy for me so I’m looking into other options. I would recommend it though, just keep the weight in mind.
One day, making my way through shallow water through rocks and driftwood, somewhere on an island in the ocean, as always, I dragged a backpack with equipment along the water, which in turn was hidden in a waterproof bag, I pull it all by the strap, it floats behind me neatly, waves, sun, birds sing, and suddenly I turn around and see that the bag is no longer horizontally above the water, but like a float, the reinforced bag broke through like g.....))). I wiped it with a napkin without disassembling it, left it in the sun for an hour and then turned it on, everything worked the same as new and after almost a year everything works perfectly and the mechanics of the lens and camera and this is after salt water, I'm surprised, but even there are no white salt traces anywhere, the Peak Design tripod has completely corroded, for release. I think I bought the right lens, because if I had saved, I would have lost my technique and mood, and if it's not difficult to earn money, then the mood and emotions are priceless. If you are interested in how such a kit shoots video, then here is a link to the film, all ground footage was shot with this lens:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN0iVmvMF8U&t=1639s
I'm a 30 years pro and I've owned many many systems. Like many of you I enjoy the look of primes and choose them for available light/shallow dof lifestyle looks. I picked up this lens after spending a ton on glass as a travel/backup. Guess what? I use it way way more than I thought I would. When shooting Ecommerce fashion, product, industrial video, and other commercial jobs this lens is phenomenal. Yes, 24-70 2.8 is the gold standard for this type of work but the added range is really helpful. I don't miss f2.8 at all. In fact, at f4 I get more keepers due to the added dof. The sharpness argument is marketing nonsense perpetuated by pixel peeping poseurs. This lens is all u need. No, get the 35mm GM too. It's THE lens for available light narrative work. Still, this lens will have you covered for most paying gigs. Am I tempted to pick up the new 24-70 mk2? Yep. Will I push the button? Not sure. It would be a vanity buy as the 24-105 is serving me very well and has paid its way literally 100x last year alone.
