Awesome lens

I have always lusted after a really good wide angle lens and on changing my Nikon kit recently to the Sony A7 iv, was wanting a wide angle as I am doing more landscape and with a trip to the Arctic upcoming.I tested a number of wide angle options and the 16mm, 18mm, 200mm, just did not quite do it.The 12mm at the bottom end of the range is incredible.I have regularly wanted to photograph landscape and building when I simply cannot get far enough back, this lens does it.Also for wide landscape it works well.

It does have a focus ring but I couldn't tell that it was doing anything when I rotated it.- Images look good at 25% on screen in Photoshop and Lightroom but when zoomed in to 100% very soft focus and not much detail.I sent this lens back and opted for a 14mm f/1.8 fixed focal length for my wide angle shots. Impressive!
23 October 2017

After hearing a lot of good things, I decided to give this lens a try and ordered it last week. I've tested it against several other lenses; short answer is that it's as good or better than any of them, including the 12mm setting. I'm very impressed. It replaces two other lenses - good in their own right - but it's a little better on the ends and corners, it has considerably reduced vignetting compared to the others, and it has virtually no CA. At 24mm, it goes downhill slightly, but is still excellent by f/5.6-8 (farther distance gets better sooner). It also works very well for infrared. I have an A7R converted to 850nm. There is some hotspotting when stopping down, but it's gradual and gentle, easily removed during RAW conversion with a circular grad.

I’m impressed.

This is an excellent lens for architecture and landscape photography. I’m blown away by how well the distortion is controlled even at 12mm. The 12-24 is sharp through out the range and holds its own against the 16-35 GM. I most appreciate the size and weight of this lens. I own the holy trinity in G Master lenses (16-35, 24-70, 70-200), but when shooting landscapes, travel or just out adventuring I’ve been carrying the 12-24G and the 24-105G. I compromise not having f2.8 but these new G lenses are so sharp and so much lighter than the GM glass. They are fun to carry with very little compromise. I appreciate Sony’s recent efforts to give us excellent glass that is light, sharp and pairs well with the a7riii/a7iii.

Just about perfect for my needs
26 July 2017

I shoot architectural photography. I need wide angle. My previous cameras were Canon and Nikon but switched to Sony about 2 years ago. Now that I'm almost 80, I needed something light weight and the A7RII fit the bill. My first lens was the 16-35 F4. It was an acceptable zoom but the sharpness at times was just a little off and bothered me. I sold the lens and went with the wonderful Zeiss Batis 18mm F2.8. FABULOUS...but I needed more flexibility than 18mm. When shooting the exterior of a condo it was difficult to capture the entire building. I also needed wider when trying to capture small rooms. I ordered the 12-24 hoping this would be the answer to my problem. Yep. Sure was. Sharp, lightweight and wide when I need WIDE! However, the first few times I used it, It was so easy to get carried away with 12mm. Lots of distortion and difficult to correct with cropping. Thankfully, the A7RII allows it without losing a lot of resolution. I now find myself being more careful and shooting mostly between 14 and 16mm. But am very grateful to have 12mm when trying to capture those 30 story condos on Wilshire Corridor. I also thought I would miss the F/2.8 for shooting exterior twilights in windy conditions but the F/4 works just fine with a little ISO boost. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who needs a wide zoom flexibility.

Nice product

This lens was supposed to replace my 16-35/4. There are many situations when 16mm just isn’t wide enough. And at 24 zoom end I could just crop to 35 mm if needed. It is sharp, feels light relative to its size. Well balanced on FF body. My only complaint is bulging front element which does not allow protection by filters. For me, protective filters are part of the lens. They sacrificed themselves many times in the past to save my lenses. Can’t help thinking if Sony, the current leader in pushing the envelope could not come up with some innovative solution. Like the hood that would have a thread for filters. At wide end, the lens stretches people off the center of the frame a lot. For landscape and architecture it is fine. I have been using the SEL1018 from 12 to 18mm (remove light shield to get 18mm) for astro Milky Way shots since 2015 and others I can not say here. But now i can sell four lenses that this will take the place of!!! I will keep the SEL1018 though!! This lens is bigger but not heavy like others, Hand carries on camera (A7RM2, A7S) very well. No circular filter and no OSS. NiSi makes a filter holder but at 12mm no need for Cir Pol filter but for night shots the Natural Night Filter is nice and ND's for water so that is an option. OSS, Wide does not require it that much but would be nice, but with in camera IS like the A7RM2/A7SM2,A6500 you can do a lot on a walkabout. Last now for travel only need two lenses this and the SEL24240 maybe a 50-500 for extra reach. But I am happy VERY HAPPY!! Also I want to thank Adorama for being in my VISA shopping mall got 3x points back for future cash use (paid with cash points, free). Oh! I have the A7s so f/4 is no problem like with other cameras/lenses and for those Milky Way shots you have to dial back f/ to avoid lens coma anyway!!! next new moon will get a Milky Way shot to add.

Using this lens with Sony Digital Filer
5 February 2019

Before buying this lens, I read some reviews which complained about the difficulties to fit this lens with filers. I decided to see if I can use the Sony digital filer application with this lens. I have to say that I am very pleased with the results. Now I dons have to buy an expensive filer system and carry it around with me on the trips. This is a great lens, if you use it carefully. I dont think it has too much of distortion. It is very sharp in the middle, bit soft at the edges, which is fine with most of the photos. As I beginner, I dont have much experience on using filers, hoping someone can also share your experience with the Sony Applications.

I've got a small sling-bag that carries the 12-24mm, 24-70mm and two teleconverters. I'm prepared for almost anything with this rig. With expensive ultra-wide lenses, you hope that geometric distortion is minimal. I've found that my 12-24m competes with my much more expensive 14mm. Very little correction is required in RAW conversion, similar in performance to my much revered 14mm. I feel like I made no sacrifice by going with a zoom.In general, using ultra-wides, I find myself at one end or the other of the focal-length range. I find corners equally sharp at both 12mm and 24mm.Build quality seems high. All my other Sony lenses are G Master, which have more metal than this lens, but this lens seems very solid and well made.
