Perfect handling, even handheld, all day long. I shot an airshow with this lens on an a7R-iii with the vertical grip it left little to be desired.I was surprised by the amount of attention my setup got--several people were drooling over it, especially the 200-600 zoom. But I treasure the photographs I got.For what it is worth, I don't think I missed much in getting the A7R-iii vs the -iv for this application, although more resolution is, well, more. But likely overkill.LensRentals are so pro, so easy to work with, and I've never had equipment from them that didn't look essentially new. They epitomize excellence. Although I'm on the hunt for a new system and may buy soon, I will always think of LR as an easy adjunct to what I own. I rented this lens (and an A74 body) before purchasing both. I have used it for almost one year. It is amazingly sharp, well built, and has a smooth internal zoom with a short throw from 200 to 600. Since I also use (and love) Nikon D850, I recently got the Nikon AF-S 200-500 as a potential replacement (to get to a one camera setup). I had to send it back after testing both because the Sony was sharper in every situation both at large and small apertures. The only downside to this lens is that it does not have a larger aperture like f4, but of course that would make it ridiculously heavy and expensive. If you want a tack sharp lens with a smooth feel at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with this one. Unfortunately, neither Sony nor Canon nor Nikon make their tripod feet Arca-Swiss compatible, so I had to buy a Really Right Stuff replacement foot.

I should say I am 76 years old but quite active & agile for my age. Shooting wildlife is my passion. The lens would have been too heavy for me to handhold but I put it on a tripod with a Gimbal and it was a piece of cake. Make sure the lens/camera is well balanced on the Gimbal!I especially like the feature that when you turn the focal ring to change focal length, the lens does not extend but stays put, decreasing the risk of unbalancing the setup.I had to buy a separate plate adapted to an Arca plate as the plate on the collar is ... MoreBefore I purchased this lens I was apprehensive about the combined weight of the lens & the camera (Sony a1) because I hold my camera with my left hand/arm and I recently had a broken wrist which was healed but not terribly strong. I actually use the collar unscrewed/loose as it gives me more flexibility with range. The quality of the movement shots I got with my first learning attempt - seals, birds - was great. I did watch YouTube for setup and shooting wildlife with the 200-600 lens which helped a lot.I apologize for this lengthy post but I guess I had a lot to say about the 200-600 lens. In summary, if you need a long lens, I recommend this one & for the quality, the price is actually rather low.PS You might want to get a cover for it because it is really light colored & animals may get distracted with the whiteness.

This lens is superb! Originally I had the Sony 100-400 GM, and was in love with it, but it didn't have the long end reach that I was looking for as an amateur photographer focusing on birding and wildlife. The 200-600 G is the answer to what I was missing! This lens is awesome! Works great with the 1.4x teleconverter I have without too much of a compromise in light loss, and it is tack sharp.Although this lens is heavy and does require one to commit to carrying, it is nice to have the zoom elements encased within the lens body to avoid weight changes when zooming. A full zoom only takes a quarter to half turn of the wrist.Definitely worth the lateral move from the 100-400 GM
I use this on my Sony A7RII for landscape photography when needed. Gives me all the reach I need at 600mm and when I go to APS-C mode I then have 900mm. It's built like a tank. Feels like a pro lens. Sharpness on a 1-10 it's an 8. I wouldn't expect more but at the same time my images look sharp enough. No complaints. It's heavy and the image bounces around a lot in the viewfinder when hand holding because of its length and weight. Always use a minimum shutter speed that is the reciprocal of your focal length when hand holding. I.E. 600mm then use 1/600th of a second min. If birding I'd go with 1/1250th sec. To give it justice when on a tripod make sure you have a heavy duty one. It really needs stability. Then you won't have to worry about shutter speeds. I'm getting the Sony A7RV in the mail tomorrow and I can't wait to see the images on that camera with this lens. I'm eager to try birding with it because of the terrific reach of the lens and the unparallel tracking/auto focus of the A7RV. My only concern is that at my age of 65 I don't know if all that weight will fatigue me quicky. We'll find out. I paid around $2,000.00 for it and I have no regrets. My only regret is that I don't have occasion to use it enough. Adorama is a great company and you also won't regret purchasing from them.
I went back and forth deciding between the Sony G Master 100-400 and this lens. I bought both and tested them on my A7III. I ended up sticking with the 100-400, but really only because I ultimately valued the 100-200 focal length more than the 400-600 range and because the 100-400 is lighter and more compact (and fits better in my bag with my other gear). But man -- the 200-600 is a beautiful lens that delivers! I didn't see any drop-off in performance across the focal range, the action on it is excellent, and it has all the features one would need. It is a hair slower than the 100-400, but that's hardly an issue. The autofocus performance is stellar. I love the Sony 200-600 f/5.6 G lens and use it for many purposes outside of wildlife or sports. It has quite a focal range that allow for a variety of interesting and creative perspectives. I like to really compress subjects and objects from a distance and the lens allows me to use very minimal post-cropping if any at all.It is somewhat heavy but I've found a few pretty comfortable positions to hold it free-handed for long periods of time, but I do use it on a tripod occasionally. Oddly enough I find the 70-200 GM to be more awkward to hold even though it weighs less and is smaller. If you're into street photography it will draw a lot of attention, none of which has been negative so far. I've yet to use it in any indoor situation but I've used it while recording with an A7SIII in a small but lively city at midnight with spectacular results, so f/5.6 really hasn't been bad for me in low light situations.Overall, this is literally one of my favorite lenses. And not only has it been fun for me to use, but the picture quality and build is truly professional. It technically is a bit impractical for 75% of the things I've used it for so far, but I love it. If you're thinking of getting this lens, just do it.I've attached a few photos to my review, nothing fancy. Just random samples other than animals.
Once received, this lens turned out to be about 30% larger than it appears online. Nevertheless, once mounted to my A7RIV, it is sufficiently light for handheld wildlife photos, since the excellent stabilization, combined with Sony?s in-camera stabilization means I am able to go as low as 1/60th of a second at full zoom and still get sharp images. After using Nikon glass for handheld aerial capture in the early 2000s, I am amazed at how incredibly sharp the current Sony E-mount system is!The built in, twist lock lens shade and cover bag means I don?t have to worry about getting the front glass dirty, and the shade keeps me safe from lens flares as close as 3 degrees off-axis from the sun. I have shot professionally for over 50 years. During that time I have shot Sony, Nikon, and Canon 35 mm and digital camera's. All make exceptional glass for their camera's.I am going on record stating that the Sony 200-600 is probably the sharpest tele-zooms I have ever used. The entire zoom range is accomplished with just a 1/4 turn of the zoom ring. The lens is sharp throughout it's zoom range from 200-600 mm.Combined with the a9, a9II, a1, or A7rIV or V, this lens focuses fast and accurately.I never recommend a teleconverter as I believe the focusing speed is comprised as I shoot mostly birds in flight. This lens also does well on sitting birds.Yes, the lens is not light, but I place my left hand just behind the lens hood and this helps balance the lens as I hand hold all the time, I also recommend the vertical grip be added to any Sony body to help with balancing this lens hand held.I also recommend reversing the tripod collar and using it as a carry handle. Makes the unit much easier to walk around with.I shoot primarily in Florida's wetlands and I generally walk around with this lens. If I walk long distances or I use my bicycle I put this unit on a cotton carrier which works well for me.I am 74 and have little difficulty walking around with this lens.If your thinking about this lens I strongly suggest you try both the 100-400 and 200-600 before you buy and see which is best suited for you.Again, I am strongly promoting this lens as an all in one wildlife lens.I also own the Sony 600 f4, and in my professional opinion at closer ranges I have trouble telling which lens I have used especially after a visit to photoshop.Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
I looked at the other zoom lenses in this range, but in the end I chose the Sony 200-600 mainly because of internal zooming. I also purchased an RRS Arca-Swiss compatible replacement foot. What can I say? This lens is the standard to which others are compared for a reason - great image quality! When you are shooting birds or wildlife at a distance, that's what really matters when you must crop. I already had the Sony 1.4x teleconverter - another reason to choose the Sony lens for the Sony system. With this lens and teleconverter I have excellent image quality up to 840mm - 1260mm equivalent if I use APS-C mode. That's a lot if versatility with excellent results. I definitely think the higher price is worth it considering those results.
