This is an incredible prime lens, we finally have compact primes from Sony that do the small A7 series justice.40mm is quickly my favorite focal length, which makes sense really. It's the still image equivalent of the most widely used cinema focal length, so it immediately evokes that look and feel to me.It's not so wide as 35mm or beyond for everyday life and street that you're having a rough time composing a shot, but it's not so tight as 50 that you can't get the meaningful scene in your shot.I can't say enough good things about the build quality, look and feel of this series of small primes. The focus ring is high quality, smooth, and easy to use despite the size of the lens. The autofocus is pretty quick on my a7Riii, faster than my 55mm Sony Zeiss which ... MoreThis is an incredible prime lens, we finally have compact primes from Sony that do the small A7 series justice.40mm is quickly my favorite focal length, which makes sense really. In my opinion the improvement between f5.6 and f11 is so minimal that it doesn't justify the loss of light. It's incredibly lightweight.Fully weather sealed w/ metal construction, this is definitely a G lens don't be mislead by its size.I've not had a need for the lens hood which is great because it takes away from how compact it is.

This is a sharp little lens, with a quick autofocus. The lens seems to be good and sharp all the way across the frame. The build quality is very good, but the price does seem a bit high when compared to similar lenses from other manufacturers. The lens, when paired with the A7C, makes a very small kit for full frame street photgraphy. Overall, I can easily recommend this lens.

By no means am I a professional or someone who tests lenses with charts and all that. However, I can tell you that this is a very well-built prime lens. The G-master badge fits the construction and feel, even if it's not meant to be the end-all be-all. On an A72 it focuses fast, the 2.5 stops of light are more than enough for daily, mess-around photography, and I bet someone more skilled than me could get a lot out of this glass. I also love how small it is on a full-frame body (and can imagine the size is even more welcome for A7C owners). The focal length is perfect for me: unique enough from a 35mm or nifty 50 to spark creativity. It's different, affordable, and capable. I don't think you'll regret this purchase, unless you expect absolute perfection in all ... MoreBy no means am I a professional or someone who tests lenses with charts and all that. This has rapidly become my default lens, and then I'll switch to a different lens if the situation calls for it. Image quality has been great, autofocus has been great. The only real complaint I have with this lens is that sometimes I want more bokeh, but it really has plenty for most situations. If you need maximum bokeh, you're probably going to be using a noticeably heavier lens.In addition to the typical uses, I think the extra field of view from the 40mm lens (compared to the 50mm f/2.5) is perfect if you plan to occasionally use your camera for video conferencing with it mounted to the back of your desk.
This lens is amazing. Crazy sharp, even wide open. Resolves amazing detail on my A7Riii. Great colors as well. Super small and focuses fast. If you like small lenses, you will love this one. I switched to Sony for their lenses and this was one that convinced me. It?s not cheap but you definitely get a quality lens with this one. Love that it is weather sealed as well. The lens hood looks funky in my opinion but the tapered shape does protect the lens well and is very functional.
Bought this for its mini size. Since I already invested in 24, 35 & 50 GM + a 55 Zeiss. so I selected this 40mm to use on A7C as a backup (I would pick 35 if this is my primary lens). The lens is in perfect balance with A7C, the fast and quite focusing is great shooting on street. The image is crispy and bright. 40mm doesn't feel too different from 50 for some reason and I can switch to APSC mode to shoot portrait for better reach. The only thing I don't like is that funny looking cap, so I bought a Hoage bayonet cap, not a screw on but made for this lens, now I have a really handsome package. Highly recommend this lens, but not as alternative to GM.
I bought this for everyday use in addition to the 35mm f/1.4 GM and the 24mm f/2.8 lens, this one's sibling.Small, lightweight, great image quality, and solid build makes this a great option and complements my set up as this one covers everyday use, during commute, while the 35mm is perfect for weekend usage or outings dedicated to photoshoot. The image quality is almost as good as the 35mm f/1.4 GM-straight out of the body RAW lacks the high micro-contrast that 35mm creates, but can be easily compensated in LightRoom and the resulting image is as satisfactory as that from the 35.I would recommend this lens for anyone who is looking for a small lightweight lens to everyday use in street photography.
One of the important reasons for migrating to Sony was availability of this lens. My favorite focal length is 40mm, and whilst it would have been even better if the largest aperture was F2.0, I am very happy with the lens as it is.I would have liked even more if the lens was smaller in size, but I understand the reasons for being this size.Quality wise, this lens is excellent. I particularly like its super fast AF with A7 IV.I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for an all day carry on lens. The lens seems to have imperceptible distortion, which is really good too.
Really, it is sharp. Mostly I'm using it at f5.6 to 11 but landscapes and interior view at 2.5 were excellent. Color is fine. Focus hold works. Yeah, I wish it had been cheaper, but it will allow me to travel almost comfortably with my Sony A7R3 around my neck rather than my lovely lightweight Fuji XE2. Attached photos are all jpegs processed and sharpened in LrC. I highly recommend it based on quality alone. Its low weight is a major benefit and the low profile makes it even more mobile. I only shoot stills, so I can't comment on video.
Bought this lens for a trip to the mountains and it did not disappoint. There is a little cat eye at f2.5 but didn't see any at f2.8. Super light and compact. 40mm is an amazing focal length too, not too wide, not too narrow. I was able to get decent landscapes and great portraits. I didn't shoot with MF so I can't speak for the focus ring. Having the lens cap go on the hood gives me peace of mind that the lens and filter won't be damaged when not in use. I brought my Zeiss 24-70mm as a backup and did not use it given the amazing portability and performance of the Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G Lens.
