A have a Sony TV with great image quality but it is full of bugs. I also used to own 3 of these fantastic paperweights. They all end up in the landfill for exactly the same reason: They freeze and will not do nothing until unplugged and re-plugged again. One by one they all started to fail and finally, I end up throwing them all away. I actually thought about sending a destroyed unit to Sony but is not worth the waste of shipping. They do not care a bit about customers. They sell junk. So good luck buying an used one. You will be sorry, guaranteed!

I had not had personal experience with 4k Blu-Ray before buying this player, but I'm glad I did. I had recently purchased a Sony 4k HDR TV and wanted to match it with some 4k content as well as having a quality up-res option for regular blu-rays and dvds that I already owned. After doing some research, I settled on this due to the ratings here and other professional reviews around the internet. As expected, the picture quality and sound from the 4k blu-rays I've purchased/tried on the system are incredible. I've honestly never seen films that look this good, even older ones. Regular blu-ray discs even shine on this player and the up-res capability makes the difference between these and a true 4k blu-ray almost imperceptible (almost). The thing that surprised me the ... The thing that surprised me the most was the up-res capability from regular DVDs as well. Granted, most of them I tested were Criterion DVDs and their transfers of old films are first class, but even so, they were actually viewable without becoming a globby mess of pixels and color. Not blu-ray quality, but still good to know that I don't have to replace/upgrade all of my old discs. The wireless update feature for software/firmware is a good quality as well since there are quite a few of these pushed out by Sony. I only mention this because quite of a few of the cheaper 4k blu-ray players need to have a wired connection for updates. This player does have streaming capability with the usual suspects of Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu among a few other random streaming apps. I'm not sure whether you get true 4k from apps like Netflix though as it doesn't seem to push 4k streams to my TV the few times I've used it.Overall, a great 4k blu-ray player that also does a great job at up-res as well.

I am very impressed with the build quality, loading speed, picture quality, and sound quality of the X800. Super nice Universal player that is one of the very few current models on the market that can play SACD and DVD-Audio in addition to BluRay, DVD, and CD. The X800 is quite a bargain since it compares well to the Oppo 203 in many ways for less than half the price. My rating would have been 5 stars except for one very puzzling decision Sony made within the operating system of the X800.I am primarily a 2 channel audiophile but also use my system occasionally to watch movies with my projector. When watching movies, I connect the X800 to my surround processor via HDMI, and sometimes also use the X800's HDMI output to listen to multi-channel SACDs in their native DSD format through my HT system . But, when listening to 2 channel music, I sometimes use the X800's S/PDIF (coax) output to feed my 2 channel hi-end DAC's S/PDIF input. Herein lies the one major disappointment with the X800: when playing SACDs with the X800 feeding my DAC via the S/PDIF coax output, the X800 requires me to go into the setup menu and change the "Digital Audio Output" setting to PCM in order to get any signal output from the X800's coax output to my DAC. Problem is, this also automatically changes the HDMI output to PCM, so if I then wish to listen to SACDs in their native DSD format through my processor via HDMI, I have to go back into the menu and reset the "Digital Audio Output" setting to "Auto". Each time the setup menu is accessed it requires play be stopped and the disc ejected to access the X800's setup menu. This is a major inconvenience and completely unnecessary!!WHY DID SONY DO THIS? Based on licensing agreements, DSD can only be output via HDMI due to its copy protection and thus the DSD signal ALWAYS HAS TO BE CONVERTED TO PCM for the S/PDIF(coax) output path. It's been that way since the inception of SACD players by Sony themselves!! So, Sony's firmware should automatically convert DSD signals to PCM when using the coax output without having to go into the setup menu and change this settings every time I wish to go from DSD via HDMI to PCM via S/PDIF (coax). The engineers at Sony didn't think this through.Sony really needs to release a firmware fix for the X800 ASAP whereby DSD is converted to PCM automatically when fed to the S/PDIF coax output while still allowing the DSD signal to be output via the HDMI output without the need to access the setup menu each time.Other than that one major gaff, this is a very impressive piece of gear and a huge bargain at its price point. Highly recommended!

I own two 4K televisions, one of them is an older Sony with no HDR support and the other is an LG OLED both with HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. I wasn't too impressed with both the Samsung and Philips Blu-ray players that were available in-store last year; I generally skip first-generation products to give them time to work out the kinks that can come with early bird new technologies like the 4K Blu-ray format. I also wanted to wait and see what Sony's offerings would be like given that they are primarily responsible for creating the Blu-ray standard and forming the Blu-ray Disc Association.Reading about the UBP-X800's 3D-printed unibody metal frame that it's built upon and how it helps almost eliminate vibrations when playing your media discs had me impressed ... I was also a bit critique about Sony's HDR-to-SDR conversion for older 4K television models that cannot understand HDR signal, so I was really curious on seeing any benefit on my older 4K set. I definitely do see somewhat of an enhancement but it's not particularly anything significantly impressive. In my opinion I would bet it would perform better than any of the other 4K Blu-ray players that do not offer this feature, but given that I have not played with those other players, take my speculation with a grain of salt.I hooked up the player to my OLED and popped in a 4K Blu-ray copy of Logan, ensuring that both HDR and 24p functions were enabled in the player's system settings. I was blown away by the picture quality as soon as the movie started and stayed consistent throughout the entire 2-hour film.Lastly, I did make sure to redeem Sony Pictures' offer for two free 4K Blu-ray movies and am awaiting those to arrive by mail. I do expect to see the same 4K HDR picture quality that I encountered with Logan. If you've been waiting for prices of 4K Blu-ray players to drop, I absolutely recommend not shunning the Sony UBP-X800 as an option; and, for those with more professional high-end custom installations, the enhanced 1000ES model may even be worth it's run for the money.
Bought this for my brother-in-law for Christmas. Purchased in mid-September because I was worried Covid might disrupt the distribution chain and make it difficult to purchase closer to Christmas. So, when it was finally opened at Christmas, discovered it plays all-region and region A discs fine, but cannot play regions B or C.B&H refused to repair or replace because item was bought more than 90 days prior. After a claim was finally opened, the item was allegedly repaired, but came back with a note saying it could not be repaired because of an unapproved hardware modification (again, the B&H region-free workaround).Round 2 with Squaretrade had me sending it back again. This time they did not even try to repair, and just sent me a check for the original cost of the item. Fine, except they won't refund me the cost of a warranty for an item Squaretrade can't/won't repair. So, B&H won't stand by their customization work, which invalidates the hardware warranty from Sony, which won't be repaired by Squaretrade although that company is all too happy to sell you a warranty for an item they won't repair.
Fast and easy menus plus audio output that is excellent in both fine detail and image placement. Supports all Audio formats including DSD and Hi-Rez Flac. Video upscaling to near 1080p with 480p input. 780 / 1080p are rendered almost identical to true 4K disk playback. Consider that the manufacture makes the recording equipment for most of the industry (TV and Film) and they own their own film studio. Note: that this model does not support Dolby HDR-10 even so, the contrast color pallet and textures are outstanding. It also includes their DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) audio upscaler. When applied, this engine will upscale even a MP3 @128 kbps to a clarity that is very entertaining. Over all it is quality product at a budget price.
I am extremely disappointed with the Sony UBP-X800 BD player. I purchased this player specifically for its ability to play both Blu-ray and DVD disks, but it has consistently failed to do so. Every time I try to play a disk, the player freezes or displays an error message(No Disk). This has happened with multiple disks, so it is clearly a problem with the player itself and not just a one-time issue.I have owned other Sony products in the past and have been satisfied with their performance, but this BD player has been a major letdown. I am extremely unhappy with my purchase and would not recommend this player to anyone. Save your money and buy a different brand.
My Sony 7200 died after 4 years which was dissapointing and with that period of passage and reading up on what was currently avaialable it seemed that that Panasonic DMPBDT380 would be a suitable replacement. Product purchased from the Leeds branch via Roger and installed. It turned out that it was an improvement over the old sony in the sound department and had a sharp picture, but lacked in detail and colour compared to the old Sony. I returned the Panasonic DMPBDT380 within the 28 days no quibble return and was offered a refund without any questions from the sales person Lee. I decided that i would put the money towards another Sony and after doingh some research before hand settled on the 2017 award winner in the Sony UBP-X800 after readng that the 2018 winner ... What a wise choice, even though it does not decode Dolby Vision, as the picture and sound are a pleasurable improvement over my old Sony and the Panasonic that i returned. I would highly recommened the Sony UBP-X800, if you can stretch to the extra £50 over the Sony UBP-700 and the service by the whole Richer Sounds team is nothing but of the highest standard. My only gripe at present is that i download the latest firmware update on to the USB as instructed, but the player refuses to acknowledge that there is anything on it!! Worked a treat though when i connected it via the earthnet. This year see's a software updated version being released for those who already have or will be looking at Dolby Vision, otherwise it's a ctracker of a machine. Will it come down much with the new version, i think not that much and not for some time anyway.
The Sony player offers excellent playback quality and a design that feels solid and high-end for a price that is around $299 depending on where you shop. The price and solid build make it a reasonable and robust Blu-Ray player. The UBP-X800 offers 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and is the latest disc-based standard, and it includes features such as 4K resolution (3,840x2,160 pixels) and better color depth. The Sony also offers support for HDR video in the form of HDR10, but not Dolby Vision. Format wars are never fun, but this one is shaping up to be a "DTS vs. Dolby" situation which means the two may happily coexist and have minimal effect on us, the end users. Among major TV makers only Samsung has yet to support Dolby Vision. We'll have to wait till the first discs arrive in June 2017 to test the efficacy of the disc format, but from what we've seen with streaming, the differences over HDR10 won't be drastic. If you enjoy streaming the UBP-X800's accent on streaming comes through from the Sony's home screen -- it's a grid of numerous streaming services and a single "disc" icon. The number of different apps the player offers keeps growing every time I turn it on and it now has over two dozen, including all of the crowd pleasers like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Pandora and Spotify. We're particularly pleased to see the inclusion of Mubi which is an excellent, curated movie service. The player offers 4K streaming from Netflix, Amazon and YouTube but only has HDR compatibility with YouTube at present. By contrast, the Samsung UBD-K8500 only offers HDR via Amazon Video. Smart TVs and dedicated streamers like the Roku Premiere+ typically have much better 4K and/or HDR app support. As far as disc playback is concerned the X800 will do 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, CD and more esoteric formats like DVD-Audio and SACD. You can also stream content over a network and the player is "Hi-res compliant," meaning it will also do 24/192 and DSD audio formats. In conclusion aside from Dolby Vision (the UBP-X800 does not offer this feature), the Sony offers almost every conceivable feature you could want, and all of the video performance you'd hope for in a next-gen player. It's a close race between the Samsung and Sony, though, and the Samsung's more affordable price currently tips things in its favor.Bottom line: I like it and not only is it robust, it plays the next gen discs with ease and more importantly there is a WOW factor for the consumer.
I have owned Sony products for most of my life and have always enjoyed their reliability and quality. My Sony products have always performed well everything from digital point and shoot cameras, camcorders to the Sony A7III.Playstations every generation and my family has always had a Sony TV back to my grandparents. I would restart movies, fast forward to where the movie had quit and struggle thru numerous times of doing this to just finish watching the movie. My wife does not have the same patience and bought a bargain brand 4K player at one of the bulk warehouse stores and forced me to switch the Sony out. The under $80 player works perfectly, no stopping, no freezing it just plays the movies in 4K like a player should. No wifi connection, no great features but it plays a movie all the way thru without freezing!! Amazing.Sony what happened to your great reliability?
