Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip For A7R IV

$368.69

(303 reviews)

The VG-C4EM provides operational controls nearly the same as those of the camera body. The location, size, and shape of buttons are optimized, using the same material used on the α7R IV body. As a result, the function, location and operational "feel" of the controls simulate those on the camera body, when the camera is held vertically. The ingenious design of the grip lets you hold the camera firmly. The Vertical Grip allows you to shoot photos easily and enjoyably regardless of whether you hold the camera horizontally or vertically, making it easier to concentrate on the subject and composition. The VG-C4EM can hold one or two NP-FZ100 batteries. When using two batteries, the camera will operate for nearly twice as long as when using one battery. Remaining battery power is indicated on the LCD screen, in 1% increments. When one battery expires, the camera automatically switches to the other, allowing continuous operation. The exterior of the VG-C4EM is made of the same magnesium alloy that is used in the α7R IV body, to provide the same rigidity as the α7R IV camera itself yet keep the overall weight and bulk to a minimum.

I started using my Sony A74 for conference video recording, I quickly found out I needed a different way to keep my camera recording, my Vertical grip took care of that and a lot more other issues like overheating, or battery replacement. Is now so easy for me to just take the cartridge out and put 2 new batteries. I love my rig, I highly recommend it, the build quality is great, a bit expensive but is totally worth it. I bought a cage for it, it feels like a tank! I love it!!

Pros: Build qualityCons: Doesn't fit the A7 IV properly despite being listed as "compatible ". It's not a snug fit as there is a gap between the grip and the base of the camera when the screw is fully tightened - which can cause some movement between grip and body. Feels like a tolerance mismatch between the grip screw and the body threaded insert. Still to measure but have informed Sony.

I bought the vertical grip because of the ergonomics (obviously much less tiring on the hand and wrist when shooting vertically) but also because it just feels more secure having more to hold onto (which is nice when you have $2400 worth of camera and $2000 worth of lens in your hand). The extra battery is also very useful.Given my budget for switching camera systems to Sony I initially purchased an aftermarket brand which felt okay (comfort, haptic feedback from buttons, etc) but was obviously really cheaply made. It packed in pretty quickly so I forked out for the Sony but was surprised that it didn't feel all that much better (buttons and such) - and for all Sony's bragging about how strong it I was surprised by how flimsy the plastic tray is that you put the ... MoreI bought the vertical grip because of the ergonomics (obviously much less tiring on the hand and wrist when shooting vertically) but also because it just feels more secure having more to hold onto (which is nice when you have $2400 worth of camera and $2000 worth of lens in your hand). Does NOT Fit Without Sending To Sony Service
13 January 2023

It is becoming a better known issue that this grip will NOT fit properly tightly on a A7R5. The bolt that tightens is TOO long and does NOT allow for a snug weather resistant fit. I'm surprised it's not been mentioned much. Not only that it is anything BUT what I consider designed to fully integrate with the body. It looks like a slap on and by NO means a smooth design where the ends and such fit seamlessly allowing for a look as if it was truly part of the body. The Canon R5 is much the same way. Looks like an add on and NOT integrated.

Does not fit the A7RV
1 March 2023

After considering the third party models, I decided to take advantage of the occasional $50 off sale and purchased this grip for the A7RV. As usual, B&H got it to me in a few days, well packaged and factory fresh. Much to my disappointment, it does not fit well on the A7RV. It seems to line up well, but even after tightening the knob for the 1/4-20 stud, a small gap remains between the camera body and the grip. There is also a small but noticeable wiggle that does nothing to instill confidence. This is disappointing for such an expensive accessory. I may try the Vello version. I could put up with a so-so fit for 25% the cost of the OEM version. I did notice another reviewer above mentioned a similar problem. Maybe Sony needs to take a look at this. Good but needs update
14 May 2023

The grip works great and is built well. I am using this with an a7iv which it states is compatible. The grip is compatible without issue, but the c1 button does not correspond to the button of the same location on the body. The grip is not a seamless fit to the a7iv but it is close enough that I really don't notice it unless I'm looking for it. Overall very happy with it and is great for longer wedding days or days out hiking.

It makes the camera!
23 March 2023

I purchase this along with the A7R5 and in my opinion the grip makes the camera! I always shoot with a grip and it gives you extra battery juice and a nice vertical grip. Also if you do not stow away the battery door from the camera body into the handle of the grip you have just enough space to hide a Apple AirTag into the space where the camera battery door would go. You have to put the AirTag with the Apple Logo down but it slides right in! Now you can LowJack you camera!

Must buy-Sony - Alpha Battery Grip

Black Vertical Battery Grip from Sony allows for long-term, comfortable shooting in the vertical orientation with the Alpha a7/a7R/a7S digital camera. It accepts 1-2 NP-FW50 batteries, which are available separately, to extend and possibly even double your shooting time. The grip uses a battery with lower power first, then automatically switches to the one with greater power when the first runs out. The remaining battery power is displayed as a percentage on your camera's LCD monitor. The grip offers an extra shutter button, located at the low position, as well as front/back control dials and Auto Exposure Lock. All controls are placed appropriately for easy, comfortable access. Rick's review of Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Battery Grip

Pros: Ergonomically excellent. Replicates controls on camera in upright position. Uses 2 standard camera batteries (unlike some other major brands). Feels good quality and well built. Can be removed when wanted i.e. if not using long hefty lenses where extra handling support is deemed helpful. Drains one battery at a time with display that shows relative charge provided authentic (but expensive) batteries are used - enabling switching out just a used one, if needed. Finally allows a longer run time in terms of shots or video and lessens chances of overheating when shooting intensive video as battery cell (source of heat) is then outside main body.Cons: Pretty expensive. Arguably for top end pro cameras, like a1, something like this should already be designed into the body - much as Canon and Nikon already do with their 'flagship/pro' bodies. This also makes an a1 + this grip rather more expensive than main Canon/Nikon competition.

Very worthwhile Sony A1 add-on
11 January 2023

As prior reviewers have noted, it's very well made. What hasn't been noted often is all the buttons on the grip have the same functions as you have programmed for the camera. So C1, C2, AF-ON, shutter release, etc. are identical functions. I use the shutter release for images and video (not the red video button) and it works flawlessly! I've only had the vertical grip a short time but already thinking about more vertical photos and video because it is so much more intuitive than trying to contort your hand for a vertical shot in horizontal camera mode. I held off buying for a while but it will probably never be removed. Two batteries welcome of course.
