Comfortable, with some minor flaws to iron out

These earphones stand up to competition - not as good as my V-Moda cans sound-wise, but more than adequate for my use (commuting, office, and gym) and super-portable. The adaptive sound profiling does a good job of matching your environment, also. The other benefit for commuting is the battery life (approx two hours of full playing with noise cancelling enabled), and you get a few charges from the case (relatively quickly, too). I find if I religiously plug the earphones in to charge whenever I am not using them (while I am in meetings/on calls in the office, for example) I don't run out of battery. For longer journeys its certainly worth taking some manual headphones to preserve the battery life when you are up and moving. The downsides; connectivity, noise cancellation, and notifications.Bluetooth connectivity is not overly robust (especially to the right hand ear bud), and seems to struggle in locations with a lot of digital interference (trains, for example). This is despite me enabling the app to prioritise signal quality over sound quality. The noise cancellation is not as effective as other Sony noise cancelling products (and certainly does not eliminate background noise, to manage expectations). While background noise is masked whilst listening to music or movie, they do not work robustly to just give you some "quiet headspace".Finally, the notification LED (that flashes when there is a notification... really pointless, as you can't see it) and chime (that cuts in over audio... really annoying!) can't be deactivated in the app. This would be a really sensible software feature.I haven't been able to work out if using a single bud switches to mono sound automatically (if not, this would be a great feature).Overall, I would definitely recommend - especially for the price. Specifically, if you are after use in the gym, the office, or on your commute (up to two hours). I would not recommend if you need continual use for more than two hours regularly, or if noise cancelling is your key reason for buying - especially if its for the silence!I hope that if Sony take anything from this review, it is to update the firmware/software to improve the noise cancelling, the notification options, the Bluetooth connectivity, and single-bud-use-to-mono. These four changes would make these little earpieces stand up to serious scrutiny.

If you need them for work/laptop purposes they're terrible.

If you compare this masterpiece of engineering to the previous model (WF-1000x) you will get to know that these are beyond greatness. The WF-1000x are basically toys...I can assure you that, this time around, the NC on these are stunning in conjunction with the passive sound isolation these provide. When I put these on for the first time, I was shocked how much noise they were able to cancel. After that, I downloaded the app and noticed that NC wasn't even turned on...My head got turned upside-down when the revamped NC kicked in. Really, really amazing. Also worth mentioning are the Ambient Sound modes which, in my point of view, got even better. The sound quality is top-notch and they fit well into my ear canals. The life span is astonishing and the case feels and looks even good!Sony has played their cards right this time. I'm sure that these are going to sell like freshly baked breads in a local market. And no, Sony didn't pay me to write this review as there are two downsides I'd like to mention:I'm quite sure that you heard about the absence of liquid resistance. It's not a big deal for me, but alas, for gym fellas, you should go off and buy something else. Also there is no way of controlling the volume? Even in the app there is no remapping in regards of volume control for some reason. By all means: why? But oh well.In conclusion, if you consider to carry a pocket-size, well thought-out and meticulous pair of earphones, then go for it. However if you like to have some extra bass, there is nothing wrong in choosing the older brother.

The Sony WF-1000XM3's ANC is ok, Bose QuietComfort earbuds ANC is noticeably better. The WF-1000XM3 always has ANC on when the earbuds turn on. With ANC on, there is slight white noise that doesn't appear to be present with the Bose. Sony's disconnection/connection etc. sounds are all in English, unlike Bose which has part English, part random sounds. Sony's voice is more natural, whereas Bose's voice is 2015's robotic voice. Good price, great buds, mediocre software
4 August 2022

Good quality construction, good fit, punchy and well balanced sound, sleek, great functionality for the price, good noise cancelling and good battery. Let's get into the issues:1. The phone software is very limited. You cannot customize the controls of the buds properly, you can only choose from a few premade schemes. (I recommend seeing a YouTube review)2. The voice in the buds that let you know when you change mode or that tell you what the status of the buds are after turning on speaks way too much and there's no way to adjust this. I know what my buds can do. I don't need an explanation every time.3. I cannot call anyone with the buds without them telling me how they can't understand me and that I sound terrible. Quality product with flaws

These truly wireless earphones sound really good, and that is their saving grace but they do have some flaws which make them a nuisance. Firstly, the battery life is not three hours. It takes a long time for them to charge again (around and hour and a half, and there is no indicator on the charging case showing the battery level of the case or the earpieces). Depending upon how much time one might continuously use the earphones, the timing of use/recharging may not be ideal. To charge the earphones inside the case it takes around and and a half hours, and the earpieces could be fully charged twice. The case takes three hours to charge so if you use these all day long, you will probably will run out of charge at some point and then charge the care for further use. ... MoreThese truly wireless earphones sound really good, and that is their saving grace but they do have some flaws which make them a nuisance. Speaking of noise-cancelling and ambient sound modes, neither are effective and personally I have never noticed any difference between the settings. However, outside sound does not filter in very much when the right ear tops are used because they should ideally create a decent deal. There are sound drop outs in the right earpiece, even with the latest firmware (at the time of writing). It doesn't bother me too much because it is relatively rare and the problem corrects itself quickly. However, it is a shame because the sound quality is much better than many other popular brands in this price range. One thing I hate is the printed writing on the earpieces. It is susceptible to fading and there is not much you can do about preserving it because when you insert the earphones into the charging pod, the writing brushes against the case. I hate when things start to look worn out, especially when harder wearing alternative ways of improving text could have been used. The one other thing I like about these is that their internal battery could potentially be replaced with some effort. Apple's variants so far have proven impossible to repair so I think for a premium product, at least this one has the potential to outlast other products. Sony improved the design and the subsequent iteration is said to be much better, but those cost more and the price has dropped for these. This is still a quality product but one that should have seen some of the links ironed out. If the links don't bother you a great deal, they are worth investing in. Oh yes, and one final thing. The earpieces are a little heavy once inside the ear and I have found that they have actually fallen out (even with the best fitting tips). Due to their weight, a fall could cause some scuffing or other damage. Thankfully the falls mine did sustain were not serious.

Returned—Dropped connections

I was excited to pick up these earbuds for daily commuting after reading a glowing review in WhatHiFi, but they ultimately disappointed me more than I could tolerate. To be sure, there are positive features of these headphones which readers can find in sales brochures and other online reviews. Those positive features were utterly outweighed by the failures of this product. These are primarily to do with a) the right earbud and b) Sony's companion Headphones app. These headphones are the first piece of high-end technology I have ever come to hate to use and the first I've ever returned.1) It's just too weird to use for phone calls and have incoming audio on the left side only. I know that this is by design, and not a fault, but it was off-putting and unacceptable ... MoreI was excited to pick up these earbuds for daily commuting after reading a glowing review in WhatHiFi, but they ultimately disappointed me more than I could tolerate. To be sure, there are positive features of these headphones which readers can find in sales brochures and other online reviews. I know that this is by design, and not a fault, but it was off-putting and unacceptable for a product in light of the recommended retail price.2) Even following the directions, it was difficult when removing the earbuds from the charging case to make sure the right bud turned on and connected immediately. I often had to hold the button on the right bud to connect it after only hearing things out of the left.3) Once both buds are paired and running, the right earbud's connectivity is so poor as to make this product unfit for purpose. I sat in a library with my phone on a desk 18" away from my left side and couldn't rest my chin on my left hand without losing connection to the right earbud. I have seen Sony's responses to other similar complaints, generally suggesting that congested wireless environments may be a problem (and no doubt my body was disrupting some of the signal in my library example above), but that is entirely inadequate. A top-of-the-line product commanding a price such as this set is simply not ready for market if one half of the system cuts out and fails routinely.4) The companion software on iPhone allowed me to prioritise stable connections over sound quality, but this preference was reset every time I turned off the earbuds. It was highly aggravating to have to open the app every time I used the earbuds—even then, listening in stable connection mode would sometimes cut out altogether and reset to sound quality mode.

The innovative Sony WF-1000X wireless ear buds
20 May 2018

I have been using these for around 3 weeks for commuting to work and their simplicity of use is excellent giving you total freedom without the restrictive cable. The noise cancelling is truly amazing with an option for ambient noise or OFF if you want to listen to things around you...all easily accessible from a button on the left master ear bud..The purchase of the product was some what a leap of faith since I was unable to test any prior to purchase due to health restrictions being an in ear device...although the ear buds can be easily changed so I am sure demonstration units would be possible...at £179.00 I am sure this would put a lot of people off....which is no surprise and no doubt makes the item less popular...This is a true wireless product with the ... MoreI have been using these for around 3 weeks for commuting to work and their simplicity of use is excellent giving you total freedom without the restrictive cable. Using the app allows firmware updates to be monitored which is something which takes away the thought of having to check..As I write this review revision 2.0 has been released which I have yet to test...it indicates this is for improved stability...we will seeI have given it a 4 out of 5 for rating with the disconnection problem stopping it from being a truly outstanding product...Having said that this is a truly innovative product that is cutting edge in its field..this can only be approved on..Am I disappointed in the purchase...would have to say NO...as overall this is a great product and would not want to go back to cables...So to sum up...love the followingThe gold colour option as opposed to the blackThe charging case...this will potentially allow operation of the ear buds up to 9 hours..3 hours for the earbuds themselves with an additional 6 hours with the charging case...not tested for this duration...but have had no issues less than 2 hours..on another point the charging case is not bulky in my opinion... with lovely rounded ends for comfort in the pocket...Simple operation with voice confirmation advising on Bluetooth connectivity, battery charge level and sound setup configuration..The negatives...well only one...As mentioned the sound disconnection on the right earbud...which Sony will hopefully fix with a firmware update....Sony you have nearly delivered an amazing product!

They sound and fit great for me, battery life is middling at around three hours
14 August 2019

I've owned Sony's higher end in-ears for a few generations now and the sound the wf-1000x are pretty great. Not crazy bass heavy nor as super high clear as the XBA-H3's but a happy middle ground. Unfortunately only AAC and SBC are the supported coding, lacking Apt-X or Sony's own LDAC. Thankfully with my use case (paired with my LG G8 and walkman) I've had no issues enabling AAC and having video stay synced. Normal and Noise Cancelling modes work fine for me. I like having my left button mapped to the Google Assistant who will then read all my notifications and messages, super handy. Battery life in NC mode listening to music is usually just shy of three hours. This is fine for me but could certainly be an issue for others. Battery life in NC mode listening to music is usually just shy of three hours. This is fine for me but could certainly be an issue for others. The charging dock feels premium if a little large, insertion can be a bit challenging at first but isn't so bad. To address some of the issues others are having: Right out of the box these suckers will drop like mad -- make sure you do all the firmware updates within the headphone connect app. I found that no matter what I do having the ambient sound modes (including Adaptive sound control) on do tend to make the right earpiece drop often. I presume since Sony is beaming data from the left to right earpieces that it's just too much for it to handle. Thankfully this doesn't matter in my use case but if this is a feature you are looking for then check out Sony's newer wf-1000xm2. They are the upgrade to this model and resolve many of the complaints surrounding the first model.
