Amazing headphones! *****

I’ve used many high end wireless headphones in recent years and always felt there was something missing. In Sony WF-1000XM4 I have finally found THE ONES! The sound quality is second to none, surpassing my Bose QQ2’s. The bass is unbelievable for in-ear headphones! The vocals come through so clear and crisp that I am hearing new elements to songs that I’ve loved for years that I had never before noticed. The Sony headphones app that accompanies the headphones is brilliant, allowing you to tweak your music to your exact liking or choose between a load of decent pre-set equaliser settings. You can also allow your headphones to recognise frequently visited places (train stations, work, home, etc) and can customise your sound and noise cancelling qualities accordingly. Speaking of the ANC, (active noise cancelling) these headphones do an AMAZING job. You can truly pretty much block out all background annoyances at busy locations or choose to allow some ambient sounds to penetrate (for example, if you need to hear train station announcements or children calling you). The buds themselves took a bit of getting used to as they are bigger than I was used to and at first was terrified they would drop out of my ears. However, don’t also has this problem covered by supplying a choice of 3 different ear tips that mould to the shape of your ear. There’s even an option in the app to test the air-tightness of your selected tips until you know you’re using the perfect size. What’s more, there’s even a configuration option in the app to have the sound quality customised to your exact ear shape by taking photos of each ear! (I know, WOW!). I also love how those headphones support Dolby atmos and Sony 360 degree reality audio which I can use on my TV and many of my Amazon music/Apple Music songs. Lastly, the headphone case is great quality as you’d expect for such premium headphones. The headphones fit magnetically and there’s no danger of them dropping out. I purchased a purpose - fit spigen armour case just to add an extra element of protection. I seriously couldn’t be happier with my purchase. The fact that these headphones are still top of most “best in- ear headphones” lists (including what hi-fi) after a solid 2-3 years is testament to how great they truly are. I’m sure they will remain top of my list for a good couple if years as I doubt many companies, other than Sony themselves, could better these!

These things are the B.O.M.B! I cannot believe just how awesome SONY bluetooth noise cancelling headphones sound. I use these when I go out for long walks in the city early in the morning and after work. I can take and make calls and people on the other side do not know I am walking through loud traffic in a city environment. The sound is punchy and has enough bass. Rock, Rap, Techno, Alternative, Post-rock, Ambient, Metal music ALL sound terrific on these little buds. Battery life is long and I have never had an issue once with these things going out on me. I use the SpinFit CP100 Plus for IEM (you can pick them up from Amazon and these upgraded medical grade silicone ear tips literally make the WF-1000XM4's perfect. These particular medical grade silicone tips DO NOT TEAR (I'm still on my first pair for over 6 months so these ear tips are for real). They make the XM4s sit in my ears more comfortably. SONYs foam tips never seemed small enough to give a perfect fir for me. Twisting the XM4's into my ears tore 2 pairs of foam tips in 3 months. The COMPLY foam tips are no better. I use the size "super small and they are just perfect! Spend the extra $$$$$ (hey look at the price of the XM4's), and make a great audio experience even BETTER! Don't worry about the audiophiles turning their noses up at these (or their big brother the SONY WH-1000XM4 over the head head phones); going wireless with awesome tone just feels terrific. The SONY headphone app makes customizing the ambient or heavy noise reduction easy for anyone. My headphones even "remember" when I am stepping onto the subway and automatically set to the heaviest noise reduction, and then ease up once I walk out of the station and onto the street. These phones are a must if you want to work out with tunes. You can even use these to get max noise reduction with NO music and go for a meditative walk. How does SONY know to allow in the sound of birds and breeze while virtually eliminating the sound of cars and construction work? Crazy but it just works. It's 2022 and these are the best bluetooth true wireless headphones you can buy. Pro tip: Get the SpinFit CP100 Plus for IEM ear tips and turn them into comfortable audio Perfection. Highly recommended.

This is my first pair of true wireless in-ear earphones and I am totally satisfied with my decision to buy them. Actually I didn't buy them, they were a Christmas present from my wife, (I told her I wanted them), and they went on sale at just the right time. I charged them until the orange light on the case turned off, and since Bluetooth was already turned on on my phone, they paired to it as soon as I inserted the left earphone in my ear. I installed the Sony headphones app onto my phone and experimented with different settings until I decided on a setup that I liked and then set them up to those preferences. The noise cancelling feature is phenomenal; my neighbor's lawn care specialist was cutting the grass while I was wearing the earphones, (no music or videos, I just had them in getting familiar with them), so I activated noise cancelling, and when it had fully activated, I could no longer hear the lawn tractor at all. I had the "Speak-to-chat" feature turned on and set to focus on voice, and when my wife came in the room and asked me a question I couldn't hear her. I asked her to repeat the question, and as I spoke, the noise cancelling turned off for me to be able to talk to her. After we had finished the conversation, noise cancellation reactivated after the time period I had set, which is 15 seconds. I don't have music installed on my phone as I am medically retired and I'm home all day so my music is on my computer which I then play through my stereo system, so I installed SiriusXM on my phone just to see how they sound playing music. "Black" by Sevendust was playing, and being able to hear the music with no outside noises was great. Noise cancellation was still turned on, and when my wife came back in to say something the music stopped when I spoke and then continued when the conversation was over. I would imagine that if I had been playing music that was on my phone it would have paused the music and then continued from the same point, On streaming music it continued at the point where the song was playing in real time. I haven't used them long enough to drain the batteries much, but just doing what I have done, the battery level has never dropped more that two or tree percent.

Excellent sound quality

Great sound quality when used for listening to music, watching a movie or show, lisyening to online learning podcasts, listening and talking in a phone call and in a meeting through video conferencing as well, as noise cancelling works very well. Sound is very clear, even when walking around the place and about 10 metres away from the connected device. Doesn't cut out when in the middle of a video conference. Yes, you have to adjust the ear buds so that it sits snugly in place and stays there for it to do it's job properly, otherwise, it will keep falling out of your ear. Yes, sometimes, if you want to move around too fast, it does fall out, so I haven't tried taking it to go on a run or strenuous exercise. I don't like to listen to anything or have any devices in my ears while exercising anyway, but if it doesn't yet stay put when I want to turn around quickly while walking, then it is probably not a good choice for when doing more strenuous exercise. It works well for the other activities aforementioned, which was the main purpose for why I had bought these in the first place, to be able to listen and talk clearly in phone calls and online video conferencing work meetings. The other activities were to test what else it can do well, or cannot do, because I use Marshall devices for speakers, to amplify and add bass to music from a smartphone or laptop, from amplifying an electric acoustic guitar's sound, and Phillips over-ear headphones, which all have outstanding features for their purposes, excellent and clear sound quality when amplifying sound or needing to add bass or treble, just to compare and give you an idea of how these ear buds' sound quality works with something elsw that is also top notch. However, the ear buds are a bit pricey, as the other devices were not as expensive and can give outstanding quality sound for the purposes they were intended for.

Feature rich but don't feel very durable.

Sony have asked me to review these while they are looking over my pair that I've had for a little over 6 months which are currently having an issue with low volume in one of the earbuds. I'd include a few pictures but I've not seen my earphones for a few weeks now and am told there is a delay in getting my earphones fixed... The build quality is okay but not great for the price, I think the overall build could be better really. They are quite plasticky which makes them light but they feel as if they could be broken quite easily too sadly. A massive pro though is the fit and in particular the foam ear tips. Together, they are very comfortable and create a good, passive seal. I can happily wear these for extended periods without any issues really. Together, they are very comfortable and create a good, passive seal. I can happily wear these for extended periods without any issues really. As for sound quality, I am happy overall. For the money you can definitely get better but I think you are paying for the compact, wireless design and features like ANC and ambient sound which in loud environments can make listening to audio through these much easier. I think it is worth mentioning that these come with LDAC which I have found to massively improve audio quality when connected to my phone - it seems to have pretty good latency too. I would say these are detailed enough and can have an EQ applied using the Sony app to better tailor them to your taste but these ultimately feel like they offer good enough clarity across the board but lack in sound stage, especially when compared to even some budget IEMs. I feel like the ANC and ambient sound deserve a bit of attention on their own. They are definitely an improvement over the previous model and I would say I prefer them to what some of the competitors offer. The ANC is quite subtle for me, I feel as though I get most of the benefit passively with how good the fit and the ear tips are anyway. The ANC definitely drowns out some background noise but not all in certain settings, it preforms best with low noises like the hum of an engine but leaves a bit to be desired even what cranked all the way up. The ambient noise mode is the stand out feature for me - extremely clear and can be adjusted to let more or less outside noise in. Very handy to just use the passive noise isolation and then let some noise in this way and compared to the competition the noise that is let in sounds less artificial to me. Overall I think these are great but then you really expect that for the price they go for. I've tried a few flagship wireless earphones now and settled on these as my favourites. I can definitely recommend them assuming money is no object as I do think they are a bit expensive for what they are and I am a bit concerned about their longevity due to the build quality. The sort of person that will enjoy these will want good audio quality but also want a convenient design with a solid feature set and likely, they are a jack of all trades and do many things well but don't really master much overall.

Great ANC headphones with room for improvement
12 March 2023

After some initial challenges with the Sony headphones, I have to say, that I am glad that I bought them. Downside was the initial learning curve. As my title already indicates the in-ears are great by reducing outside noise and have excellent sound quality. After experimenting with the headphones connect app and applying some upgrades to the in-ears I can enjoy them. At first my headphones would not swith off automatically, to fix this I had to go through some help steps (factory reset) to get the "automatic off" to work. After questioning the design of always having to store them in the loading case, I did not get a explanation for this design. It limits the lifetime of the hardwired battery. Great Sony Name - Disappointing Product
11 March 2023

I bought this headset to use when travelling on long haul flights. The reviews were great, and the compact size meant it was much easier than full size headphones to pack into cabin baggage. I also loved the idea of them being automatically recharged in the travel case. On unboxing, the instructions took a bit of working through to set up the headset, involving downloading the app and registering a Sony account to complete the set up. The first disappointment was finding you need to make a monthly subscription to use the full features of the headset. The second disappointment was finding the headset is difficult to fit comfortably in your ears, they feel quite unstable in use as though they are going to fall out, so you continually push them back in. I would not like to wear these in the street, they feel quite unsafe. The third, and most annoying, disappointment was finding the headset is not compatible with apt-X codec, the most common software used to lip sync with TV's and video devices. It means that whenever you use a Bluetooth transmitter to watch TV or a video on an inflight entertainment system then the sound is out of sync with the video, very annoying. I did investigate Bluetooth transmitters compatible with Sony products, but they are definitely not portable and significantly more expensive than standard Bluetooth transmitters. I will test out the noise cancelling qualities next time I fly, but that will be the only benefit of using this headset against the disposable, cheap inflight headsets that airlines supply.

Needs better selection of tips, multipoint no-show
7 February 2023

It's no real secret that a pair of earphones needs to fit extremely well and be completely sealed in your ears. Yet somehow on these very expensive Sony flagships, they only include three foam ear tip sets small medium and large. None of them fit my ears. I seriously considered returning these because they just weren't performing well. Without a good seal there is almost no bass and the high end features like noise cancellation and ambient sound certainly don't work at all the way they're supposed to. Also the buds are more likely to fall out if they're not well fitted. Would it kill you Sony to include some extra large and extra small tips as well as some regular rubber flange type tips? These bits cost next to nothing! It's ridiculous to think that there are only ... MoreIt's no real secret that a pair of earphones needs to fit extremely well and be completely sealed in your ears. Also the buds are more likely to fall out if they're not well fitted. Would it kill you Sony to include some extra large and extra small tips as well as some regular rubber flange type tips? These bits cost next to nothing! It's ridiculous to think that there are only three sizes of ears out there. I doubt if anyone would return these if they could get them to fit in their ears well. I ended up trying some rubber flanges from some other extremely cheap earbuds I have and those tips fit far better than anything Sony included. Now, when you get a good seal in your ears these do some nice things. The noise cancellation works very well on low end rumbling rustling sounds. It doesn't work very well on high pitch sounds but the sealed ear tips block most of that anyway. What's really interesting is the ambient mode, where it continues to block some of that low frequency noise and allows you to hear things going on around you. You could wear them this way all day long and talk to people in be safe outside in traffic, and they still sound good on music. One big frustration is the continued lack of multipoint Bluetooth on these, Even though Sony announced months ago that they would bring the feature. Most of us have multiple devices we switch to and multi-point would be a huge selling point, especially on these extremely expensive units in 2023. I for one am listening to these on my S22 phone but typing this on my Samsung tablet. Another gripe is the touch control setup You can change the attributes of left and right bud taps separately but you can't mix and match features. So for instance if you want to control volume, switch between ambient\noise reduction, use Google Assistant, and also use play\pause you cannot do all those things. Even though there are more than enough touch combinations to do probably 8 things at once if you wanted to. There is a convenient widget on Android but you can't assign what the widget can do. You can see what the battery levels are turn adaptive sound control on or off and switch equalizer settings, none of which I find useful. Finally I have to say that all the requests to sign in and sign up for stuff makes setting up these things in the software a much much longer and more tedious process than it ought to be. I recently bought a $16 pair of wireless earbuds for my son and they sound nearly as good as these Sony's, have simple rubber ear tips that fit me, seal up and block a lot of sound without fancy noise reduction, and have volume control and play pause. When I think that I could buy like 15 SETS like that for the cost of the Sony's I think maybe I'm kind of insane for keeping them. Plus I'm having to shell out for some aftermarket ear tips that cost about the same amount of money as these cheap earbuds all in! Yoiks.

Perfect set of headphones with software drawbacks
16 September 2022

I'll start off saying, the sound quality and features offered by these headphones are impeccable. The ONLY thing holding them back from being perfect is some little software bugs, and a small comfort factor. A quick overview, then I'll elaborate. Pros: - Amazing sound quality - Perfect fit in ear, changeable tips, don't fall out - ANC is absolutely incredible - Battery life is fantastic - Touch controls are very responsive - Bluetooth connection is quick and stable - USB-C charging is quick - Software features are excellent Cons: - Software can be a little buggy - Can be difficult to initially get them comfortable due to the size of the outer shell - In ear design makes them not great for running First off, these sound great. 10/10 for the sound, especially the ... MoreI'll start off saying, the sound quality and features offered by these headphones are impeccable. The fit in your ear is perfect, as they have 3 sets of interchangeable tips. The software tests the fit for you, and tells you if it's sealed properly or you need a bigger tips. Very useful as I'm a Large in the right, Medium in the left and I wouldn't have known. The ANC is unbelievable, although these are my first ANC headphones. At the gym, it block maybe 90% of background noise (that's treadmills, bikes, the background music, everything) and when I play my own music, I can't hear any of it at all. In the car driving at 110km/h in a 20 year old straight pipe diesel, with roof racks and a solar panel on the roof, in the wind, and it block out the noise of the trip too which was truly surprising. Battery is great, I have no complaints here at all. The case charges the buds quickly and I've never used the buds themselves under maybe 75%. The case is yet to drop under 50% but I plug them in whenever I can be bothered. Touch controls are responsive and easy to locate, even though the functionality of them is a bit limited. The software functions are 10/10. Location-tailored EQ and speak-to-chat are handy for the workplace, home and the gym without wanting to fiddle with settings every time. This is ridiculously handy. Speak to chat works very well with no false activations for me so far. It's also very quick, which is what I wish they did for a quick tap to disable ANC, instead it announces the mode switch which takes a few seconds. Speaking of software, it's a solid 8/10. They have a companion app to select your EQ, fine tune your ANC settings, pass-through, speak to chat etc. It works well MOST of the time, but does have its moments. Removing one earbud and placing it in the case, causes problems. Putting either into the case without the other makes the music stop. Easy enough to restart it but it is annoying. If you place the right earbud into the case, restart the music, then later want to replace the right earbud in your ear, often the audio glitches out, and cuts in and out in a kind of "stereo wave" from right to left and back again, which is hard to describe but you have to put both earbuds back in the case to restart them to fix it. Very annoying, although not common. Touch controls can't be tailored for single or double earbud use, which is something I'd love to see in a future update. You either get ANC controls or music controls, but can't have both with a single bud. This is especially annoying when you take out the right earbud, and want to restart your music - you're out of luck because the right earbud controls the music. When you put the earbuds in, you get a gentle voice telling you the battery percentage and that Bluetooth has connected. Handy to know but this feature should turn off if you're in a phone call. If I'm using my phone and want to switch to the earbuds, there's a solid 5 seconds of phone call that I can't hear because of this announcement. Fine for personal calls but not for business or professional calls. The outer shell on these bad boys is huge. For your standard ear size, they're almost too big. You have to position them properly so the hard plastic doesn't press on any fleshy bits causing discomfort for long periods. This isn't too hard to get right every time but has an initial learning curve. They will feel uncomfortable the first few times you use them but that's normal, until you learn how to position them so give them a chance. As per every set of deep-in-ear designed earbuds, they're not fantastic for high-impact exercise like running or even power walking. Every step is heard in the ear due to the slight movement of the bud and air movement deep inside your ear. Any runner or gym-goer knows the pain, but it's unavoidable without going for an open backed design with wing-tips so they stay in your ear, which often sacrifice overall sound quality for, sound quality at the gym. I prefer the 90% to sound good and the 10% to be a little annoying personally. With those few software changes, these would be 10/10 every day. Until then, 8/10 (or in this case, 4/5). They're an excellent set of earbuds that will not disappoint. Be wary of the fitment, and make sure you fit the tips properly and be mindful when positioning them - they are BIG, and can be uncomfortable for the uninitiated. These are 100% worth the RRP, so if you get them on a sale price you're ahead.

Sony's WF-1000XM4 Noise-Cancelling Earbuds
10 July 2022

So I was looking forward to trying the update of the XM3s to the XM4s. Overall, I have to say that I am quite impressed. What I like: * The new sleeker and rounder shape change. * Noise-cancelling engine/ algorithm (it's very effective - probably only bested by Sony's own over-ear headphone WH-1000XM4s) * Seems more reliable in charging and syncing with the left and right earbuds than the XM3s *so far* (I had issues with 2 pairs of XM3s where one earbud won't charge properly and failed to sync with the other earbud) * Sound quality - music sounds crisp and punchy with good imaging and definition. Vocals and instruments sound natural and clear in the mids and highs. The bass response is excellent when you manage to achieve a good fit and seal. Vocals and instruments sound natural and clear in the mids and highs. The bass response is excellent when you manage to achieve a good fit and seal. I prefer these than some of the other well-known brands as a few seem to sound forced and muddy when trying to reproduce a solid bass. The fact you can fine tune them to your preference in the included app also helps. What I would like to see: * Bit disappointed that Sony has decided to offer only foam eartips and not include the silicone option - esp at this price point! I normally require the large and the shape of the silicone tips meant I have a bit more leeway for adjustment. The included foam tips are not quite large enough, esp for my left ear. This means that it often moves around and loses its proper seal and compromises the sound quality, negating any noise-cancelling benefits. #Sony - please include silicone eartips; I would love a set of large, please! * I think I've read others have had issues with fit as well. Personally, I wouldn't use these for jogging as they are just too loose and falls out easily (for me, YMMV). They are barely coping with a brisk walk as is, in my experience - perhaps a shaped ear canal support similar to what Bose does would go a long way? * Battery life - it may be asking a lot from such a compact package, but I would love if the battery life can be extended. I always listen with Sony's DSEE switched on as the music sounds nowhere near as good with it off, so I don't bother. So I'm probably getting 3 to 4 hours out of a charge before having to pop them back into the case. Sony - it would be helpful if you can also quote expected run-times with DSEE on in your advertising or specs. I know Marketing may not like it but it would be helpful for end users. * Finally, it would be great if Sony could include a toggle or on/off switch on the case so the user can choose whether they want to recharge the buds or not - sometimes, I just want to store the buds and not charge them so they get a chance for the batteries to run down.
