I purchased these about a month ago. This is my first foray into wireless noise canceling headphones in about five years, I am impressed with the improvements. The sound quality is simply terrific, approximately as good as a set of wired headphones of similar cost. The wireless link is reliable, no interference or dropouts noted though in fairness I usually use these with my phone which is never more than a few feet away. I purchased these in part to replace a set of headphones that I use when I cut my grass. That is a very challenging environment for noise reduction as it contains wide band noise from very low frequencies up to almost the limit of human hearing. The headphones knocks the mower noise down to a really surprising level, and even with the noise reduction working that hard the audio still sounds great. I also very much appreciate the touch features of these headphones. My experience with non-phone/computer gesture sensing has not been good. However these sense tap and swipe gestures very reliably. The headphones come in a small zippered case and include accessories such as an airplane adapter and hardwired cable. They charge in three hours or less, usually much less, from USB-C. Sony also has an app available for iOS and android that provides various settings for noise reduction, equalizer, and setting the function of a dedicated button on the headphones. I can't speak to the iOS version but the android version works well, I've had absolutely no issues with it. Overall I think these are a great choice, and well worth the price.

I personally, I bought a pair of SennHeiser momentum 3's to replace these, but there are a lot of other competing anc headphones to choose from. Headphones like the Bose 700's, Bose QuietComfort 35, or Bowers & Wilkins px7. Those are just a few I think I would have been more happy purchasing than these headphones.

BUTTONS PEOPLE. For the love of God, why is normal basic human functionality such an unreasonable request? There I was, just washing some dishes wearing headphones while on an important call, and somebody needed to get my attention and talk to me for a minute. Naturally, I go to just simply move one earpiece off of my ear to easily listen to what they needed to say real quick. No need to touch any controls at all, right? Not with wet fingers. Now the call I was on needs to hang up immediately and without warning because that's how touch screens work. I shudder to think how these headphones will suffer in slight damp rain! Just TRY to rapidly lower or raise the volume while listening to music on these Sony's. It skipped like three songs in a row just trying to do what the Bose would do SO EASILY. Honestly, like leave the touch screen for all the people who just die over every ridiculous and unnecessary innovation. Fine, but give me some dang buttons that I could use instead! Like, it's already got two buttons, an On and Off button, why not a VERY simple volume button? Better yet, why not let me turn off the idiotic touch screen on the app and just use my buttons? I will suffer through reduced capabilities with a smile on my face knowing that BASIC functions will work without worry. They are comfortable and provide good isolation, and unlike the Bose pair the microphone actually works. Time will tell how they hold up, but I fear the rain, and I fear touching the controls AT ALL knowing that it might interpret my touch as literally anything if I don't do it exactly perfectly precisely right. I did a ton of research and it seems that all the decent headphones today that have the features I need (Excellent isolation as I work with loud, rumbling equipment all day, Bluetooth, battery life, water resistance for rainy weather (yeah right, I know), and a microphone that, you know, works) all have those stupid touch screens. The exception being the Bose QC45's, but I tried em and they had so many connectivity issues, garbage mic issues, and couldn't handle the noise from a window being rolled down in a car without painful bursts of sound in my ear, so I guess I'm stuck with this crap. If there was literally ANYTHING else I would buy it.

When I took the XM4s off, I was amazed at how loud the huge store sounded, even though it didn't sound loud before I put the headphones on. I was almost ready to go home empty-handed, but I decided to chat with two very friendly salesmen about my concerns. They confirmed what I had read in the reviews—that you can tweak the EQ in the app that comes with the XM4s, so I left with a set, knowing that I had 14 days to return them if necessary. Antsy to do a real-world test on my own headphones, I drove the 40 miles home and got started. Mine sounded way better than the store's demo model after I turned noise cancelling off. But the sound was still lackluster, to put it mildly. So I downloaded the Sony Headphones app and set the EQ to the "Bright" preset suggested by a couple of reviewers. Some improvement, but they still didn't sound like $350 headphones. I searched on line and found a suggestion on Reddit for a manual EQ setting. WOW! They sound so good now that I can't take them off! I'm addicted, and have been listening to all kinds of music that I knew by heart, to see if they sounded different with these cans. YES! (A few times, while listening with the free five-month Apple Music subscription that came with the phones, I’ll come across a song that needs a little more treble, so I turn on the Boost Treble setting in iOS settings for just that one song. However, most music in any genre sounds incredible.) Using various fairly high-quality phones in the past, I usually ended up with sore ear edges after extended listening sessions. These XM4s are SO comfortable that I have not had any ear fatigue whatsoever. They’re large enough that my ears fit inside with room to spare. Even with noise cancellation off, these things seal out sound extremely well, due to their luxurious construction. I flushed the toilet and thought it was broken, because I couldn’t hear it! I vacuumed the apartment yesterday with them on and could barely hear the vacuum cleaner. Someone was mowing grass outside my open window, and I couldn’t hear it at all. I turned off the Speak to Chat feature because it was annoying, and putting my hand over the right headphone worked perfectly fine when I needed to bring back the ambient noise or talk to someone. It took a few tries to master the touch controls, but they’re like second nature now. I have these headphones paired with a MacBook Pro, an iPhone, an iPad Pro, and I've had my Sony WH-1000XM4s for three days. They are my first over-the-ear headphone purchase since the 1980s or so. After telling myself buying a quality pair of headphones was worth $300 plus i did the research an for the price point an value (so i thought) i landed here sony xm4. First off it never speed charged at all. Which was 80-90° the reason i went there. Thought i was doing something wrong until about a month in it started to charge when an how long it felt like meaning i could plug it in for hours only to pick it up an have 10° batterie. Than i started to notice an electrical burning scent coming from somewhere in my office i could’t locate but weirdly i only noticed while wearing headphones huh. Answering calls sucked too since it would ring i could answer or accept call with headset but to engage i would have to fumble to locate my phone to switch from iphone call to headset every time an at-least 50° of calls hung up before i got there. It was a constant annoying race each call an if i missed someone important i would be upset an to some it all up. Thats what this purchased left me $300 broker an upset. First of all, concerning the noise cancelling, it is really very effective (much more than I expected). I bought it in the first place to work because I have difficulties concentrating and we can say that it has changed my life. I am much more efficient, and it helps me a lot to ignore my environment and focus on my work. I can work almost anywhere now. The sound quality is amazing, I use it primarily for work, but finally I also use it for playing video games and listening to music and in any case it does a remarkable job. It follows me everywhere and for everything. I was a little reluctant to buy headphones because of comfort. Most of the time I don't really like headphones because I find them heavy, they hurt my ears or my head in the long run. Although a little heavy (but far from other headphones that I have tried), the comfort of this headphones remains very surprising when you see its size at first sight. The ears fit entirely inside the pads, so it doesn't press on them, and wearing glasses to work, I don't feel any discomfort on that side either. In the end, I have nothing to complain about the comfort, we simply forget it once it is put on. I bought the "silver" model, (which I find is more beige/taupe than silver), and it is really very pretty, I am very happy with it. The design is great, not too big, no worries to wear it for everyday life! In terms of practicality, again full of surprises. Being able to connect to multiple devices at the same time comes in convenient when working on both the computer and the phone. The application to configure it is very easy to use and very practical, almost all the settings can be personalized and it really adapts to what you want to do with it. The headset controls are very well thought out, you can really do everything without taking out the phone. In addition, the carrying case is very practical and is a real plus for me. It is quite thin, fits in my bag and allows it to be protected when not in use. Just fold it up and put it away. And finally, the quality seems very good, it seems very robust and the autonomy is really great. I use it for 2 whole days without needing to recharge it, and the fast charge allows me to a reasonable autonomy in a short time if necessary. To sum up, this headphones was a fantastic discovery for me and I can say that it has changed my life. I recommend it without hesitation, and besides a lot of people around me are thinking of buying it after having tried it!

You will have to play with the equalizer in the app as I don't think the default sound is the best. Also, even as someone who loves soprano pop songs and wants super clear vocals, it can get ear-piercing with the default setup. I think I figured out something that works really well for my liking, though. The Bluetooth multipoint is interesting. For some reason, I expected it to be more like a mixer where it blends both sounds. Instead, it switches. It doesn't really work flawlessly for me. I had it connected to my personal Android phone and work MacBook Pro. Even when the MacBook Pro has been in my bag and closed before I even turn on the headphones, somehow they connect to the MacBook Pro as well as my phone. This can sometimes cause issues as it will not play sound from my phone as it thinks my MacBook Pro is using the audio. Additionally, I've noticed this happens if I have Zoom setup to use my XM4 mic, even when I'm not on a call. I wish I could, in the app, tap one or the other device to force it. As for comfort, these were terrible at first. Of course, everyone has different head shapes, so your mileage will vary. I have a large head and the force that these headphones clamp hurts after a while. After a few weeks, these have been fitting a tiny bit better, so maybe it just takes some breaking in. My ears touch the sides of the cups, so I guess my ears are large? I don't think I could wear these for like eight hours, but I can probably manage a couple hours. A few other things I've noticed: the auto-pause after taking off doesn't always work - sometimes it continues playing music. I don't use the touch sensors that much, but they work as advertised. I wish the custom button would let me switch between noise cancelling and ambient sound only - instead it switches between those two as well as off. I turned off the ambient sound when talking as it picked up when I was singing with the song. The hand to ear cup for temporary ambient sound is great and I use it almost every day. I wish I could turn off the voice feedback - when using Bluetooth multipoint, you'll be listening to music and then suddenly it lowers volume and second device connected. Overall, I like the headphones and if it wasn't for the clamping force and comfort, I would consider these the best. Who knows, it might be perfect for you!

I wear these headphones religiously, even when I’m just out doing errands or going out on my walks. I do see people wearing these at the gym but the leather does not feel like it is meant for sweat or being wet for extended periods of time. I am biased because personally I prefer how wireless earbuds feel but defintely feel more like the type of headphones you would wear at an office, library, bus, or even home if you have loud roommates/neighbors. noise canceling is phenomenal! I love wearing these when I vacuum because if i turn the music loud enough, i can barely hear the vacuum! My only pain with these headphones is that they are heavy and get SUPER HOT after an hour or two. I find that after extended periods of time with the noise canceling mode on, my ears start to turn red and sweat. I hate this alot but it seems to be my personal experience with ALL noise cancelling headphones i have tried. The QC 45s are easier to wear for extended periods of time if that is more important to you but there is always going to be something that can be improved upon in every product so pick your poison QC45: Extended comfort + Physical buttons vs XM4s: Ambient Sound pass through + superior features
