Sony XAVAX1000 6.2" Apple Carplay Receiver with Bluetooth

I installed this stereo in my 1995 MR2 to add a bit of modernity and functionality, but there are some annoying issues with this unit I can't get over. I'm surprised this has been revered so much by the other reviewers.The good: Carplay on a budget. Has pre-outs for active speakers, and a microphone. It also uses your car's illumination wire to dim the display when you turn your lights on. Sound quality is decent but this is more down to the amplifier if you're using active audio, like I am. I can't speak for passive audio (driven by the stereo itself).The bad: you already know that it's only wired, and only Apple carplay. I suppose that can be expected at this price point. The first being, the power aerial signal is always active when the unit is on, not just when using the radio function. If your car has a retractable antenna, this means that the antenna will always be extended when the stereo is on. Since I don't use the radio much, I've just resorted to unplugging the power antenna.Worse still, this head unit has only volatile memory, no storage. Meaning, if it loses power, for instance being disconnected from the battery, all its settings are reset and it goes back into demo mode. This wouldn't be too much of an issue, but it drains a whopping 170mA when the car is off! Easily enough to drain the battery in a week or two. So, I've just wired it to accessory power and leaving it on default settings every time. There's also no way to turn the head unit off without turning the car off.Finally, the physical volume knob is great, and why I chose it, but it would have been great to have physical forward and backward buttons too.

I bought this as a replacement for Kenwood receiver that stopped working after about 7 years. The main features I wanted was the ability to add a backup camera, Apple Car play, a USB port on the front, and volume control knob instead of the up/down arrow keys found on my old Kenwood radio (which used to get stuck periodically).The overall interface is easy to use. Apple car play works very well and the sound quality using the phone interface much better than my previous radio receiver. I replaced my 2005 Lexus LS430 dated cassette/CD changer with this Sony radio, primary I wanted to add Apple CarPlay and now it's up to date 21st century. I bought a custom trim kit with amplifier adapter from BeatSonic and it retained the factory A/C, Navigation, amplifier and backup camera. I am extremely happy with the Sony radio simple menu and easy to use, the plus is with the volume knob! I was able to connect the Sony radio with the factory Mark Levinson sound system, it's now like a new system much better detail and clarity, the most obvious is now it sound like home stereo in the car cabin.I was able to get an angle USB adapter to streamline the setup along with my Audioquest Jitterbug and Cinnamon lighting cable.
