initial setup went fine, phone was indeed quick, responsive, feels very premium. However the apps suddenly were not opening, pure black screen, except the app I am opening, it's logo in the centre and it never opens. Waited a few minutes, before trying to restart. It did not however restart. I was very excited about getting this phone as I had not purchased a new phone since the Xperia 1 II and Sony had stopped supporting this version.I am sure there are thousands of other reviews about the amazing camera and they would be absolutely correct. The video features are also pretty cool. I am at the start of a rewilding project so I take lots of photos and videos of insects, trees and birds. It is so cheap looking and I despite manually locking the phone when I am on a call I still end up muting myself or putting people on hold with my face. It's such a basic thing that Sony have completely overlooked. There is no protection for the actual screen which could easily get scratched in a pocket or a handbag.I just expected the basics to be covered considering I know how much effort went into all the other features.I am forever telling people that if you buy an expensive device do not cheap out on the cover and here Sony have really cheaped out.The day after my purchase I contacted Sony. The agent was lovely and did recommend using a screen proctector however there were none available through the Sony website and there are no plans for a flip cover for this model.

This somehow feels like wasting time, although it's only for a few milliseconds.

I love big phones, and a 6.5" tall phone just feels like a small screen for content in every way compared to the iPhone 14 pro max and Z Fold 4. Surprisingly, I didn't actually find it all that different (not comparable with Z Fold 4). Haptic is also quite nice, but nothing near iPhone's haptics. But one thing that made me daily drive the Xperia, was the weight. It is almost 40g lighter than the iPhone 14 pro max, and it makes using the phone soooo much easier. I could reach anywhere on the screen with ease, moving it around with my tiny hands. It also produced much less stress on my hands and it is very light.The experience I've had so far on the Xperia is amazing, though with some bugs, and also it overheating on my bed overnight playing music, and other minor problems. The phone is no where near perfect, and is quite incomplete in comparison to Samsung or iPhone flagships. But the weight and form factor, screen quality is more than enough for me to switch over. If the iPhone 14 Pro max (or 15 pro max) is around the same weight as the Sony Xperia 1 V, I would probably switch back to iPhone without a doubt. But right now, Xperia 1 V is my go to.

This is probably the thing that's taking me the longest to get used to, not because it's bad but because there are so many options when it comes to using it. I've been used to the simple point and shoot type of photography which you can still do with the Xperia but it also has some pro options which allow for a huge amount of control over how you take your photos and videos. It's still early days but I'm starting to get some great results with it and it's definitely worth persevering with.If you're looking for something a bit out of the ordinary I thoroughly recommend it.

The traditional black, the platinum silver, which reminded me so much of the colour of the original PlayStation and the army style Khaki Green.After debating between the silver or green, I chose the Khaki Green.I can day that I am glad I decided to try a different android smartphone brand. The 4k display is absolutely out of this world. The picture quality and videos you can make, will make you feel like a pro. They photo options will take some time getting used to, but please stick with them because it will be worth it. The snapdragon 8 gen 2 has resolved most of the heat issues of the 1iv.When you pull out you your Sony Xperia 1v, its like pulling an alpha camera out of your pocket. No other smartphone can compete with your 4k old screen either.£1299 is expensive but it's more than worth it. We'll done Sony on making a beautiful phone.I just hope one day we see an Xperia Fold and i hope we also see tablets and smartwatches make a comeback.

And a better torch, the current one is more a night light than a torch. And some improvements to the eq app, the phone speakers benefit from some eq, but when i plug in headphones or connect bluetooth speakers, the automatic dolby eq ruins the sound and I couldn't find a setting to have it automatically turn off when a different audio device is connected.And then there is the reason im writing this review. Well, sony removed things like 3D ToF, while seemingly relying on it for autofocus at low light. Now, the phone will show a contrast rich picture with little noise in the viewfinder, but refuse to focus. Switching to manual focus will disable nightmode so good luck taking a picture at night without a tripod. Meanwhile my old pixel will show a wall of noise, still somehow focus and then use its nightmode to create an ok image.Other oddities are slow motion (only 120fps ??) and the missing timelapse feature.The focus issue should be fixable in software. For the next phone, bring back some ToF sensor to assist the autofocus.3/5 until sony fixes the autofocus, then it would be 5/5 for being the last high end phone that still has an sd card slot, rectangular screen, headphone jack and front facing speakers.
If you were in doubt about purchasing the Sony Xperia 1 V the simple answer is don't be!Things that are familiar, the android skin , very easy near stock experience as with the IV, look and feel with Android 13 with some minor graphical tweaks.Reception from calls appears the same as before but for me it's okay even on low reception the phone does some tweaking to assist audio.I love the new design, it's Sony very high build quality and functional while looking darn good doing it.The phone is gripper for sure but like many of us , it's all wrapped up in a case.It's a fraction top heavy over previous Xperia phones but it's never a problem in use.Screen seems a little better at light detection over the IV and faster at adapting, clarity is insanely good as ... MoreIf you were in doubt about purchasing the Sony Xperia 1 V the simple answer is don't be!Things that are familiar, the android skin , very easy near stock experience as with the IV, look and feel with Android 13 with some minor graphical tweaks.Reception from calls appears the same as before but for me it's okay even on low reception the phone does some tweaking to assist audio.I love the new design, it's Sony very high build quality and functional while looking darn good doing it.The phone is gripper for sure but like many of us , it's all wrapped up in a case.It's a fraction top heavy over previous Xperia phones but it's never a problem in use.Screen seems a little better at light detection over the IV and faster at adapting, clarity is insanely good as is watching content.The speakers sound a bit more balanced with vocals having a nice timbre, loudness is very good !Sony really do make improvements each generation on what is already a great set up.The spatial audio depending on content and angle at times will have sounds feeling they're around you .Through the excellent MK 5 headphones this is much more prominent when using with say the XM4 Earbuds , this is down to design so over ear does give a better experience.Buttons are as before which are really nice feeling and positioned perfectly.Multitasking and heat management are much improved over the previous models, not once did the phone over heat or appear to lag , I've used in a tropic environment for a full day with no issues.My previous IV since the last updates has also held its own without issues on the same day as I took both phones.The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has given the MKV some excellent new features when it comes to video creation and photography.What's really amazing is the new sensor but most to my weeks usage is how Sony has increased its photography processing it is truly now in Alpha camera bracketsThe new UI makes it an absolute joy to use .The JPEG mode is where all A.I kicks in but the phone is doing some amazing things with its previous shared ultra wide and zoom lens.I would like Sony to add a vertical slider so not only do we know our camera is level bit also the correct pitch as grid lines don't always help,I find this feature helpful when shooting from a lower stanceOptical zoom still struggle a bit with image softness, even in bright light and high shutter speeds it can be a little hit and miss , in lower light it also strugglesThe new presets are really good to play about with as is the cinetone s for mobile, Which looks fantastic when played on a TVI am really impressed with the new re-work of the camera systems.The new sensor has a newly developed Zeiss coating which works with the new sensor to produce something a bit special.The other lens are very capable under the new software and I hope the optical image can be tweaked again but I feel this maybe software orientated as the IV seems to give slightly better results despite using a different computational and physical sensor set upThe new night mode function gives stunning jpeg shots , no comparison over other models but again the optical and ultra wide need some extra help as the new 24mm lens is vastly superior with its function.Sony are balancing the cost to function, the new sensor on all lens would be an even more formidable partner to a full frame camera .Focus peaking and focus zoom are a game changer as now I know even while using the optical zoom it's at its best , the optical zoom while using peaking doesn't always have an out line so again maybe a software update to assist with this.I really do love this phone and I hope a vertical pitch level can be added to the camera display as with their other Alpha series's camera's to gauge tilt.Along with optical zoom tweaks and focus peaking on the 85-125mm lensAnother thing is a set default brightness in camera and video modes as a few times I've botched a picture despite using a histogram as the screen brightness caught me out.All in all absolutely worth the upgrade.I've used video presentation mode straight from the phone to a live feed and it certainly is another game changer while on the go and wanting minimal equipment.Losing the 3D iTof and colour sensor hasn't resulted in any colour or focus issues, the computational side of things is advanced enough to work of the sensors.There are many videos online with the phone, I have had great results in every mode and all I can say is Sony tweak the mentioned bits and congratulate your team on the mobile studio in your pocket crown as this camera phone is amazing!
If like me you're a Sony phone buyer, I feel the Xperia 1 V will be right for you.I can't compare to any other phones, as I can't even remember the last phone I had that wasn't a Sony.It does everything my 1 III did but better! And that useless Google assistant button is finally gone!!It's very clean in its look, which I love, Sony talked a lot about grip and would love to have seen a PS version (copying the dualsense with small X, triangles etc, opportunity missed there maybe!) but if like most people, you use a case, it doesn't really make much difference..Speaking of cases, that was something my 1 III was very short on but I can't remember the last time Sony released an official 'wallet' style case, which is all I used and they were some of the best cases ... When I first received the phone, my first full charge lasted 3 days!Amazing, I thought.. But since a recent update, it seems to have gone back to 'average' and find myself charging a little each day, otherwise I risk the battery dying.It's such a shame because at first I thought this wasn't going to be just a good phone but a great one! But expectations are firmly back in check.In summary, this is the best Xperia I have had since the XZ, which I loved.. Until I dropped it in 200° cooking oil (which it survived BTW!) and overall, does everything I need it to and does it very well!My only disappointment was that it didn't come with a charger, so opted to buy one. No longer can I hold the high ground of 'at least Sony still give you a charger,' which does seem a tad obsurd for a £1300 phone but it was only a matter of time I guess.For me, a very good phone, just shy of greatness!
I think that the latest Xperia 1 V is absolutely beautiful and the best one yet. I have only been using for a couple of weeks and not tested all features yet, but I use this mobile every day and battery life is great and rarely needs a charge. I love the look, weight, size and feel of this mobile and performance is outstanding. It also has dedicated apps that work in tune with the camera and video, which means that they are literary made for each other.The camera is fantastic straight out of the box and no one does colour like Sony when it comes to pictures that truly represent real life colours, unlike other brands that simply go over the top with their interpretation of colour.So far I cannot find fault and looking forward to testing all features especially ... I can’t understand why so many people go with the crowd and in some ways I don’t want them to discover just how good Xperia phones are, because then they would be the crowd.I would say that Sony xperia mobiles are so underrated and yet they are up there with the best in most areas and especially camera/picture quality second to none in my view.I would also like to say that the idea of a dedicated button for the camera was pure geniusAnother point of note is that I took advantage of the pre-order offer on headphones and they simple match up perfectly and that in turn means that the phone cost is way below other competitors.If you wanted to compete on more sales and get people to see just how great your product is then simply match their prices and give 4/5 years support.Maybe it does not matter on the number of sales, and Sony simply create and make the best mobile that they can and that’s enough.All I can say is keeping doing what you do because for me you have the best mobile out there bar none.
