I've had the 5 IV for around a month. I've been awaiting the subtle revisions to the design since the 5 II. The slab sides and matt black are en pointe. The camera's performance (which were bizarrely poor on previous 5's) are lovely now.Its the most complete Xpreria, no Android phone around. Maximum water & dust protection, running Android 13 pretty close to stock, thankfully retaining a 3.5mm jack, notification light, real front firing stereo speakers with all the Sony tech you would expect from their audio and visual divisions. PS5 (and 4) integration is great.Also, little things like their massively improved haptics don't get enough attention.Would like a Walkman app instead of the generic music one, but that's the only downside.Batter life is amazing.

I purchased this phone a coupe of weeks ago. I had a Sony XZ3 previously, so the change wasn't too traumatic. However, there are a few differences. Initially, the phone seemed to freeze a lot, however, this has now ceased (maybe a issue with transferring the data from my old phone?). The screen is a lot clearer and the camera is awesome (It'll take a bit of getting used to if you don't use the basic shooting mode, as it's more light a DSLR. Much lighter and cleaner lines, easy to handle. It'll take a bit of getting used to as the old phone used your index finger print ID, this one uses the thumb print (brain retraining required). All in all a good update.

I had this a day before having to return it. If left on the home screen it constantly restarted. I tried safe mode, reinstalling the software (software repair) and every other suggestion. Nothing worked. So disappointing for a new device. The only think that stoppe dit was leaving it on charge (impractical) or watching a video. But as soon as your screen goes off within 60 seconds it would restart and keep on restarting until you picked it up to do something with it. I had to turn it off completely overnight before sending it back. I expect there may be some sort of software update rolled out but I couldn't wait for that to happen. the only plus is I am now an expert in setting up a new phone! Such a same as it otherwise looked a lovely device.

I bought this phone three months ago based on the camera spec (I assumed they'd got the basics covered). Apart from the overheating problem the camera is excellent.The first main issue is Mobile signal strength, no matter what sim I use or location the phone's reception is very poor, I suspect the internal antenna is weak.The second big issue is the fingerprint scanner, it works maybe one time out of ten and cannot be relied upon. Often locking you out of banking apps etc. Very frustrating.Bascially it's almost unusable as a day to day phone but takes great pictures and video, however, I have cameras that can do that.Very disappointed with this expensive product and not the usual high quality I would expect from Sony.

Sound wise, it's a case of playing around with the settings until you find something that suits your ears. I find that the extra sound 'enhancements' give a fantastic effect when playing music through the phone itself, but need turning off when using Bluetooth through the car - that could just be personal preference of course.As with my previous Sony ... The processor and combined ram is impressive. This was all about camera and your usual phone features and apps, so got the 5IVFirstly, personally I think we've reached a point where most top end phones are fast as each other, similar base specs including the display, even mid tier phones do a very good job for many consumers.What seperates the phones are involvement and software experience, done efficiently plus cameras that can capture in the purist form. This is where the 5IV excels.Although the base software is very similar to many brands, each have their own "secret sauce" and though the 5IV is not jumping at you with all kinds of fancy, sometimes gimmicky options, the sofware experince is more refined, sophisticated and has options and tweaks for real world logical use, especially as the phone is slim and tall with a unique aspect ration. It does feel truly fantastic to use and hold, snappy response and fantastic colour reproduction. As a photographer who calibrates my monitors and TV's too, I appreciate a high quality display. The few movies I played back looked truly amazing, although honestly and comically very small for me, more so when sitting in the same room as a 65" TV, but watching general social content its great.I can especially be confident in the colours when takling images and editing, although knowing me, I'd probably want to tweak further if possible ha.Now to the cameras, the reason for the phone. When I had the phone it was on Android 12, but was prompted to upgrade to 13 and did so. I did take some test shots under Android 12, but could not tell any perceivable difference in image quality with Android 13.Whether the Sony specific apps were also upgraded, I dont know.The images themselves, wow! Someone has finally moved away from the ridiculous highly saturated/unnatural colours of many many other phones, producing nicely balanced, true to life images. I understand such colours and saturation appeases peoples minds but the reality is, this idea has been pushed making consumers think this is the best/truest way.It's akin to TV's in showrooms being on Vivid or high bright to attract but no where near accurate or intended by the artist. So, I'm glad this dramna has been reigned back though I think only Sony will do this. Hence, this phone is more suited to photographers or those who understand and appreciate artisitry and intent.Thus, the apps for capturing images are mainly geared towards people who are willing to slow down and just like a DSLR/Mirrorless, dial in their settings and take images.All the apps have a automode but it will produce images very similar to the manual setup not the 'pop' style rainbow images. Its still a fantastic setting for quick snaps but for the best of the best with honours, manual control is best and plus it's a great involving process.Now, the images are truly beautiful, low noise and clear and some of the best I've seen but I know somewhat they are held back. I suppose this done as not to cannibalise their "real" cameras which is a shame because I feel either the sensors or apps are not extracting their best potential or perhaps they crippled in hardware, which still makes sense.Hence, why so many other phone makers, who simply makes only phones have non of such issues so push to the extreme.Never the less, in my opinion, the 5IV has probably one of the best, if not best cameras around currently for anyone who wants to capture pure images and is the ONLY phone that enables that in such a methodical and involving manner, leading to a wonderful experience.Just to add, battery life is amazing! Not surprised considering how well Sony create tweaks and algorithms for battery longevity, I remember Stamina.Overall, my best phone camera in the last few years, obviously we progress but Sony is carving its own path and not following (SDCARD & keeping the 3.5mm jack).I guess that's one issue, the 3.5mm output is very weak and the sound not too clean, could do with a better/more powerful DAC, especially for those who listen using £200+ headphones. I guess that's a another purposeful decision to not stifle their Walkman player market, oh dear.
The physical phone is great, a sensible size, neat and easy to hold. Unfortunately in practice it is terrible, verging on the unusable. The first handset had to be returned as it would restart itself every 20 minutes even after doing all of the resets/repairs etc. The second one is *slightly* better - it restarts itself every night which is a pain but manageable. I have tried back-up/restore, reset to factory settings etc etc but nothing helps. It does it in safe mode too so it's not due to any downloaded apps. Apps can also take forever to open - sometimes them open instantly but others it can take 5 minutes. Took me 20 mins to reply to a WhatApp message from my hubby the other day as it just wouldn't open ;-( I use AnyDo to remind me to take meds and stuff but it ... So far my experience with the Xperia has been verygood, photos have excellent quality and are pin sharp, the display is super clear and bright, very good call quality, and super fast processor with zero lag in day to day operation. I did a lot of research before upgrading for a new phone and the overheating issues reported on this device has been a complete non issue and no problem at all. I also noticed that that the build quality and fit and finish is top notch and superior to my old Samsung S10. The Xperia isan excellent phone, not perfect but close enough.
