I read for years in the many photography blogs, forums, pro reviews - how bad this lens is - decentering issues et' al.' So, despite the many excellent photos from this lens on Flickr, I held off buying because of the fear I'd end up with a decentered copy. Well, I am not doubting that quality issues plagued this lens early on. But when the price dropped by $500, I thought it was worth the risk to buy one...with the confidence that B&H would seamlessly either exchange it or provide refund. Lo and behold this lens is not anything remotely close to what the poor reviews say about it - at least not my copy. This lens produces some of the creamiest and amazing bokeh for a 35mm lens. It is sharp corner to corner. The copy of the Sony Distagon I received, after examining numerous, brick wall and other images at f/1.4 and other apertures at various distances showed no evidence of the right-side lens tilt or decentering that this lens is often accused of. Of course, I don't own an optical bench; who knows what that might reveal, but to my eyes, the lens' characteristics appeared to conform pretty closely to the DXOMark test measurements. This is not a perfect lens. I'd prefer that it had an on-lens, auto-manual switch; it doesn't. I'd also prefer that it was sharper in the corners, wide open. I also wish the aperture settings on the Sony went to F/22 instead of just F16. But that's not a deal breaker for me. Basically, you have to work with this lens' strengths. This means, for example, when recording images with the lens fully open and up to f/2.2, center focusing without recomposing and composing with crops during processing. Where this lens really shines is between f/2.8 and f/11, where its easily as sharp as my Sony FE 55mm f/1.8. Fully open at f/1.4, the lens does an excellent job of isolating a subject with a very decently smooth, blurred background. For me, this means close-up work reproduction ratio is ca. 0.2 with found objects, flowers, etc., and some portraiture. I don't tend to do a lot of low-light work, but the capability is there if I need it. Except at low light, where the lens hunts a bit, the auto focus is superb in all modes. I don't do video, so I can't really assess the lens' capabilities for video capture. All in all, this lens is capable of delivering stunning images, so long as one learns and accepts its characteristics and plays to its strengths. If I could, I would rate this lens at 4.5, but I'm rounding up to a 5, because it is really is a pleasure to use.

I read the lens wasn't sharp, I read the lens was impossible to find centered. Just goes to show you that it pays to find out for yourself.The lens is sharp, has beautiful bokeh, this Zeiss Distagon makes 3D images that are unique. I have the 35 1.4 GM as well. While I think that lens is amazing, somehow I like the images this Zeiss puts out better. It's a people lens.The design is beautiful too, looks really nice, built like a tank. Feels very high end, MF is dampened perfectly.Anyways, thought I'd give my opinion.

The predominately metal build on this lens is to the highest standards and reminds me of a 1cm longer version of the Sony FE 16-35 f4. Even the lens hoods are similar. Yes, it is a bit heavy to carry around all day compared to a Loxia 35/2, but manageable given the promised performance of an auto-focus f/1.4. The FE 35mm f/1.4 had a snappy focus and tracked well except in low-light situations, and then it was not lumbering, just slower with a bit of hunting. The manual focus was very responsive and useful when trying to obtain maximum sharpness at f/1.4 for still photography. Additionally I discovered that the bokeh of the Loxia 35 was slightly better too, perhaps because it has 10 diaphragm blades instead of 9. In some images of cascading sunlight, the Sony FE 35 1.4 bokeh resemble thinly sliced onions. Not my favorite look. While I am open to finding a faster, auto-focus alternative to my Loxia 35 for this focal length, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 lens is not that piece of glass for me due to the reasons cited above. With the gracious support of the customer service staff at B&H Photo I returned this lens and will not spend any further time looking for a good copy, as has been noted in other reviews. Until Sony takes the QC measures to insure their lenses perform as advertised and touted by their artisans, I will look to Carl Zeiss and others to fill my lens requirements.
I have had this incredible lens for a few years now and thought I would upgrade to the newer and lighter Sony 35 mm f/1.4 GM lens. With both lenses on hand, I did a few tests. Firstly, the front element on the Zeiss is much larger and is able to gather more light. At the same ISO/shutter speed/aperture, the Zeiss is a little brighter and this is evident on the histogram. This naturally means a little bit less noise if you have to crank up the shadows in post. Secondly, while the new GM lens is slightly sharper, rendering a pleasing photograph must include things like micro contrast (the ability to capture and render subtle tonal gradations therefore greater dimensionality throughout the image). Superb quality and fast autofocus. Unfortunately, this lens paired with the Sony a7iii felt ver uncomfortable in my hands. I have big hands. Be that as it may, the Olympus em 1 mark ii feels almost perfect in my hands. Rented for a mini maternity shot

It's lightweight, feels great in the hands, and takes amazing photos, but...The problem I have with this lens is its autofocus capabilities. Yes, it's fast. Yes, it works. Yes, it produces great photos. However, using eye-autofocus on this lens isn't consistent enough. I've heard a lot of things about this lens being heavy for a mirrorless lens and yes - if you're speaking in terms of mirrorless everything. For those like myself, who are used to heavy lenses like Sigma Art & Canon L optics, this lens actually feels pretty light for what it looks like.One thing I will mention is that if you are used to changing aperture on your camera, I recommend leaving the aperture ring on the lens to "A", otherwise you will have to use the ring each and every time for changes. =]

An unsuspecting tree squirrel scurries across the ground, an old mountain road that leaves it helpless to attacks from above. SQREAAAAAACCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it seems as is the helpless squirrel has been become prey to the razor sharp focus of the American bald eagle, which still isn’t nearly as sharp as the focus on this amazing Zeiss lens. I was extremely impressed with its capabilities.
