It does a pretty good job of keeping wind noise out of videos.The microphone that is built in is ok for some general use photography and video, but when you are vlogging or content creating, you will want something more directional like the Sony Shotgun Microphone. The regular microphone will still do fine if you are only able to start with just the camera.The camera itself boasts a 20.1 Megapixel lens with a large amount of digital zoom (44x) but only 2.7x Optical zoom. I would have liked to see more optical zoom but this is a good amount for a non SLR camera It can record 4k HDR Video at 30fps and 1080p Video at 60fps. It can also do slow motion with HFR at 960fps, which is super fun to do. The built in image stabilization does a pretty good job at keeping the camera steady while walking or just moving it around a bit. Auto exposure does a pretty good job at consistent illumination and filling when moving around lighter and darker areas while filming.Connecting through Wifi lets you transfer photo's and videos off the device and easily manage the othersOverall I am pleasantly surprised with this camera and its functionality and image and video quality. The sound quality from the built in microphone is overall good, but I would recommend upgrading to the Shotgun Microphone. I highly recommend this camera for content creators and vloggers. The shooting grip makes it so much easier to either have the camera stay in place as well as taking it with me. I believe the main target audience of this camera are people who currently use the front facing cameras on their smart phones to record. This is a great alternative to using your phone and in some ways is a step up in my opinion. The camera is simple to use, and you are able to just pop in the battery pack, turn it on and go. The default settings are good enough to use for those that don’t care about tweaking the exposure, white balance, etc., but it does have advanced settings that allows those out there to change many settings to fine tune the image to your liking. A few of those settings that I came across was setting the zoom level from the default 2x up to 4x digital zoom and turning off/on the built-in wind noise reduction. I am using the ECG-M1 shotgun microphone with a wind screen blocker, so I did not test the built-in functionality with that. Zoom speed can also be adjusted to be slow, normal, or fast as well, with some testing, the auto focusing seemed to keep up well with all the speeds. The camera does have a fixed length lens that is 20mm wide-angle and it works great for the selfie kind of shot and I didn’t have to fully extend my arm out to get the image I was looking for. Flipping open the screen is an additional way of turning on the camera so you can get to recording the action faster. Speaking of the screen, it is a touch screen interface, and you have the ability to customize what you want to be on it, and it was easy to set up some of my frequently used options that I change. The screen also pivots and rotates 180 degrees and allows you to see the image it is capturing while in selfie mode. As good as this camera is, there are a few drawbacks that I noted. First in the imaging quality, the background sky (while outdoors) can get blown out a bit and not look normal. Also, the external microphone connector is only a clip to hold it in place, it does not provide a connection for recording, and you must use a 3.5mm audio cable, and the short one I have gets in the way of the movement of the pivoting screen. Also, this camera does not shoot in RAW mode and if you are a true professional, you may not like the stock formats that it has. However, this is not a camera that is targeted to photography / videography professionals in my opinion but to content creators who just want to have a set up that is quick and easy so they can focus on content or reviewing products. This camera is also compatible with SDXC, SDHC memory cards as well as Sony’s Memory Stick Pro Duo and Micro cards. The battery pack is a Lithium Ion NP-BX1 1240mAh battery that I have managed to record about 45 minutes on it. The battery is easy to swap out and Sony placed the tripod mount off-set so you can still access the battery/memory cards when it is mounted still. Overall, this is a great beginner’s camera with some advanced features, and it will shoot 1080P with out a hiccup, but 4K I did notice some slight drops every now and then.

The fixed focal length, lack of optical zoom, lack of flash and hot shoe, JPEG only format (no RAW nor JPG+ RAW like more advanced Sony cameras), and lack of HDR are some of the shortcomings that make the ZV-1F less than ideal for use primarily as a still camera. The 1F has a 4X digital zoom that isn’t great but better than nothing. The ZV-1F can take great still photos in the right conditions on occasion but is much stronger for video content creation like vlogging, shooting short selfie videos, and even mild action cam duties. I specified mild because the ZV-1F is neither waterproof, dustproof, nor ruggedly constructed like true action cams. Recordings can also suffer rolling shutter jitters with abrupt or excessive movement during shooting. So, great camera for filming skiing, not so great for filming while skiing.The ZV-1F’s main strength is content creation. Whether it’s shooting a podcast, travel or general vlogging, capturing live action at events, performing interviews, or merely creating a quick social media clip, Sony designed the ZV-1F to easily capture creative video for sharing. The 4K/30p (or 24p) video is tack sharp, has good light balance, good low light performance, accurate skin tones, and the auto-tracking and facial recognition work great at keeping the primary subject in focus and at the forefront. The camera does a great job with AF subject tracking although the AF sometimes reacts a bit slowly, resulting in brief loss of focus as it adjusts. Sony’s Active Mode image stabilization is effective for most mobile shooting situations and even feels somewhat like using a gimbal when combined with Sony’s remote grip tripod. One cool useful creative feature is the product showcase. When active, the camera quickly shifts focus to emphasize objects held up in front of the camera. It’s fantastic for product demonstrations or sharing effortless close ups of objects with viewers. Additional features like slow motion, hyper lapse, and built-in electronic creative filters further add to the creative capabilities of the ZV-1F. The lens is also threaded which should allow use of physical filters if needed. Features are accessed via a combo touchscreen and dial driven menu. The menu may seem a little dated and complicated at first glance but quickly becomes easy and intuitive to navigate. It’s much like the menu systems on my older Sony mirrorless cameras which also utilized a combination of touchscreen, physical buttons, and dial. The LCD touchscreen display can fully rotate around to allow use while facing the lens. The screen can also rotate to face inward while closed for protection during transport or storage. The ZV-1F can utilize Sony’s shooting grip in tripod mode, which allows convenient wireless control of the camera from the tripod. Other tripods and accessories can also be used on the ZV-1F’s standard bottom thread.The ZV-1F can be used for live streaming but I’m not a big fan of stationary live-streaming on battery power. The ZV-1F uses the same battery as the ZV-1, so I assume the same charging passthrough options could be used with the ZV-1F to avoid relying on the battery or overcharging during use. The ZV-1F ships with a removeable battery and USB charging cable that charges through a USB-C port on the camera. The port is also used for streaming and data transfer.The ZV-1F mic works well and includes a wind filter that slips onto the cold shoe. The cold shoe and 3.5mm mic input on the side can also accommodate a compatible external mic. I included a photo of the ZV-1F utilizing Sony’s ECM-G1 shotgun mic. The ZV-1F’s internal mic sounds good but the external mics I tested sounded clearer, warmer, and more professional. The ZV-1F is also compatible with Sony’s Imaging Edge+ companion app. Imaging Edge+ allows remote control shooting via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct connectivity to the camera. It also allows remote viewing, copying, and management of stored media on the camera.So, is the ZV-1F worth it? It depends on the situation. A decent smartphone can handle the needs of the average content creator if those needs remain basic. The ZV-1F is likely overkill for someone posting occasional videos on social media for friends and family or doing the latest viral trend. However, I prefer dedicated cameras like the ZV-1F over smartphones if engaging in more professional content creation reaching a larger audience. Dedicated cameras provide more opportunities for experience working with different settings, multiple cameras, and allow more creative freedom as someone grows with their craft. The ZV-F1 is a good bridge camera between smartphones and more advanced imaging hardware with steeper learning curves. The ZV-1F is easy to pick up and start using right away on full auto. That being said, the quality of this camera sensor is more than enough for any popular media platform. The camera comes with several software features as well such as a bokeh mode as well as preset filters for your image, I can also attest that this camera records very well in harsh and low light and was quite surprised. The camera also comes with industry standard features such as the ability to choose the rate and quality of your video with 4x digital zoom (that is quite good!), image stabilization and auto/eyefocus. Have I mentioned it can record 4k at 120fps? This is quite the packed sensor and especially at this price.Build Quality- The camera comes with several features that one would expect on a modern high end camera, usb-c port (that also charges the battery), 3.5mm jack, Bluetooth, WIFI, and a Micro hdmi port. On the bottom of the camera you will find your threaded plug and your port to open for the battery/sd card. The camera feels nice, light and ultra portable thanks to its small and nimble body.Battery- battery life is great, the battery price….$50 to replace. While that just is the nature of the beast, I did not have any issues with battery life while filming and saw the battery as lasting all day - I would keep an extra on deck just in case, but battery life was never an issue for me.Complaints- This camera is pretty good so I had to get really nitpicky to find an issue, and I was really only able to come up with one - when connecting to Bluetooth remotes (such as Sony's very own shooting grip) I had to go into a random Bluetooth menu and turn ON the ability for it to be controlled by connected Bluetooth devices. Not sure why this wasn't turned on out of the box or toggles on when Sony’s own control device connects to it - but it is something I had to go into the settings (which to be fair are very well laid out) and turn on.Final Thoughts- This is a great camera to start recording video on seriously, and while it isn’t the highest end camera - it also isn’t several thousands of dollars while also competing with them. I was genuinely shocked at its quality and effectiveness in the field and will keep it in my personal arsenal as it serves a good purpose even in the presence of its bigger brothers because this camera is SO portable. It’s small but yet it’s powerful enough, which what gives it the edge against action cameras and mobile phones. Sony packs a 1-inch Exmor RS sensor with 20mm F/2.0 Zeiss Tessar T prime lens that gives you 20.1 megapixels for stills and up to 4K/30P with 100M bitrate. Decent specs and the lens does deserve the Zeiss’ big name. It’s important to note that you can only shoot stills in JPEG. It would be great if the camera can shoot RAW through future updates, but this seems to be unlikely to happen given that this camera is not primarily intended for photography.As expected, the camera gives you fairly fast auto focus response. Sony gives you active stabilization that will crop your video in exchange for a more stable clip. The active stabilization is ok, however it’s not as effective when walking in fast pace as I would expect it to be, considering what EIS can do these days. Also, I would like it more if the camera has a headphone jack so we can monitor the audio as we record the video but then again, we’re talking about a camera designed for straightforward shooting.As for Image quality, it is good. It’s sharp enough for a small camera. However, the rolling shutter is noticeable when you pan the camera a bit fast. Since this is a Sony, it works well with Sony’s external mic that makes use of Sony’s proprietary hot shoe. When paired with Sony’s new Vlogger shotgun microphone, you’d be getting clear audio with no hassle involved since the hot shoe supplies both the audio connection and power. I should say that even without using external microphone, the camera’s built-in microphone performs well and it is good enough for most users.As it is the case with other Sony vlogging cameras, you can use the camera as a webcam, which is a very nice and useful feature to have. For sure this camera performs better and gives you better image quality than your typical webcam in terms of low light capabilities and sharpness. To sum up, this camera lives up to what it is intended for; as long as you’re okay with some of its limitations.

You can then use the touch screen to navigate through everything at this point. The touchscreen is very responsive and very clear.As an amateur I made the mistake of trying to learn how to use the camera as I went along rather than reading the manual first. This is a mistake as you need to have a basic understanding of how to use the different functions before you start as I found out to my cost when trying to use it in very cold weather.My first attempts were in Oregon over the Christmas period in temperatures of up to minus 15 degrees Celsius. Since then I have used the camera back in the England with much easier conditions .In both conditions the camera has performed excellently with great results. At first I had trouble using the buttons on both the top of the camera and on the back as they are quite small and I have quite stubby fingers. However once you get used to where they are it becomes a lot easier.The camera automatically defaults to video mode so you need to manually adjust the shooting mode if you want to take still photos. I know the camera is aimed primarily at Vloggers but it would be nice if you could choose for the default setting to be still if you know this is the method you are going to use.The zoom is operated via the monitor and is quick at working although the focus does seem to take a few moments to readjust so you need to be aware of this.I particularly like the creative look which allows you to capture in soft tone, subdued tones, black and white and sepia and a few other options as well. If you take the same still shot using each filter you can see a substantial difference. I have uploaded a couple of the same video to You tube on standard definition and with the vivid effect on. The colour difference is noticeable although the standard shot looks more naturalThe speed of uploads of video and photographs via blue tooth is very quick and the camera picks up other devices to link to easily.Battery life seems very good as I have only had to charge it 3 times and this was using the camera for play back as well.I have never owned such a good quality camera and the question I ask is will I use this instead of my camera on my phone? The answer is definitely yes now that I understand all the aspects of the camera. I will especially use it for holidays and special occasions as the quality of the images will help me remember these events

You aren't going to get a ton of the low end from your voice but it does a decent job picking your up and sounding clear for just a flat spot on the camera picking up the sound.Photos come out pretty good as well. Nothing to write home about if you already use your recently released phone's rear camera to be honest but they're good photos. If you want to carry a dedicated photo camera, this will get your some good pictures with settings your can't play around with on your phone so with some effort and experience you can probably get even better pictures but for me, the convenience of taking pictures with my phone can't be trumped. Especially with all the work that phones do in post processing now a days. I'll probably use this for photos and videos when I'm going to an event that I know I'm going to just be taking pictures non-stop, though.Video quality looks really good as well. You can only get 30fps for your 4K shots if that's what you're taking but you can go up to 120fps with 1080p shots. Again, things are very comparable to my iPhone 13 Pro Max's rear camera but blow away the front camera. If you have the skills, I'm sure there are amazing tweaks and settings you can do to get things to look perfect for every scenario. But from a non-professional standpoint, I find the picture quality to be great with most of the default settings.One thing that I think is overlooked for a camera like this is streaming on services like Twitch and YouTube. I replaced my $180 webcam with this camera (and bought a cheap quick-release thing to let me unmount it whenever I want to take it out of my setup) and the difference is night and day. The amount of control is fantastic when you're coming from not so cheap webcam. The most disappointing aspect of using this camera for streaming is that it's capped at 720p30 for streaming over USB-C. I'm not sure why this limitation needs to exist or if maybe they can bump that up to a solid 1080p60 with a firmware update in the future but it was sad to see when I tried it out. You CAN still use it with a micro-HDMI cable and an HDMI capture device, though. You'll get the full output that way. There's a setting to eliminate any of the UI elements on the HDMI output so you get a fully clear HDMI. The best part of using this as a webcam replacement is the flip forward screen that you can use to make sure you're in frame and everything looks good while you're streaming.My list of negatives is pretty short and they do focus around using the camera as a high quality streaming camrea for Twitch. The 720p output over USB-C is disappointing and means you'll need an additional cable as well as an HDMI capture device if you're looking to get more than 720p to your stream. Another thing that could be better is having more (all?) controls on the screen without needing to use the control wheel on the back. This downside also exists when taking vlog videos because you're probably looking at the screen flipped towards you and not the back of the camera. With my stream setup, the camera is fairly close to the wall and accessing the back of the camera is not super easy to do. So it's impossible to tweak every setting while looking at the frame I need to look at without using my phone to connect to the camera. There is a "button" on the screen that toggles the ability to touch certain controls on the screen to modify them but the controls available are limited (for instance, there's no manual/auto focus control on the screen). Having another control on the screen that basically just opens up the full menu would be amazing here.Speaking of controlling the camera with my phone, that's a thing you can do too! The setup is a little clunky and the performance could be better. I'm not 100% certain but I have to assume it's using 2.4Ghz wifi instead of 5Ghz so interference is an issue here but it might work fine for you. The most annoying part of the whole thing is how long it takes to control the camera from your phone. You need to launch the app, hit the "control camera" button and then connect and wait for it to connect to bluetooth and then disconnect you from your own wifi and connect directly to your camrea's wifi and then probably fail once and try again. So it's almost like a solid minute between deciding I need to tweak a setting and actually getting things going on my phone. When it's running on the phone, the video performance is pretty choppy but I've never used the phone to really look at the shot, I more care about being able to control some of the things I can't control from the screen without the control wheel. I understand having the phone connect directly to the camera since you'll probably be using this a lot when you're not on your home wifi, it's just a small annoyance and it pretty consistently fails with my iPhone on the first attempt but usually doesn't have an issue the second time. Overall, though, the phone connection is a saving grace to allowing me to control the phone when the back controls are not accessible and I can deal with the clunkiness for that ability.Overall, this camera is going to be my stream camera for a long time to come. The quality is top notch and with a quick release foot, it's easy to pop out and in and take the camera with me when I want to film something else or take some pictures of the kids. At it's price point, you can't really get much better than this. Sacrificing a couple of the bells and whistles that you get with a much more expensive professional entry (along with much more expensive lenses) is nothing because you probably won't need of those things anyways for what this camera is made to do. Make content better than using the front facing camera on your phone. The quality will rival the back facing camera on your phone as well so it's nice to have a dedicated piece of hardware that you can just use for all of your filming needs. Get this camera is you're looking for an upgrade.

Additionally, you can plug it directly into your computer and use it as a webcam at 720p / 30 fps. I wish it could output 1080p over USB, but that will require a capture card. I streamed live on Twitch for over 2 hours and the camera worked fine the whole time using the included USB cable. When plugged in for streaming, the camera is powered by USB, which is an added bonus, if you’re trying to avoid unnecessary cables.The camera has a fixed lens, meaning no optical zoom. There’s a 4X digital zoom for photos, and a 2X zoom for videos. The zoomed in photo looks fine, but with a non-removable lens, it would be nice to have an optical zoom, but the sacrifice would be the general image quality. You can do a lot with a 20 mm wide lens though, and for vloggers, it’s pretty much perfect for on-the-go shoots with one or two people on camera.Finally, the sound. The camera has a built-in directional 3-capsule microphone that’s great for talking, whether it’s into the camera or for an interview. A wind screen is included and does a terrific job at keeping out wind sounds and plosives, although it doesn’t look as puffed up as in the photos.
