I had been running my z906 for a few weeks with my on board audio on the Asus Maximus XI hero and for fun wanted to see what optical out would do vs the 3.5mm. It sounded obviously better with bass which was always quite lacking and the rest of the audio was improved a bit too but with optical I was limited to front speakers only in almost all cases with the exception of an avi video that is actually a 5.1 test tool. On the z906 the DECODE light would come on and I could get 5.1 and it sounded great. So I decided to go with a sound card so I could either get optical to work in 5.1 or get 3.5mm to sound as good as optical. I was able to accomplish the latter. With this card the audio sounds just as good over 3.5mm as it does over optical. I still have the same problem as I did before with on board audio. When attempting to use optical it still only functions on that single avi video which I suspected it would before I bought this based on card specs (the ZXR might push 5.1 over optical). But I'm able to get everything I was after by simply using the old 3.5mm cable. The bass sounds great and can be turned up over what I'm looking for now (WAY more than it would do with onboard audio) and the rest of the audio sounds excellent. The 5.1 works well in games. Music sounds great as well as movies. The software provides me all the features I need. Its designed to work with movies, music, games and general audio. I can adjust bass levels, treble and other useful features in the "acoustic engine" and it also provides a very important setup for speaker distance and individual Db adjustments for any of the 5 speakers. This is very important for me because I have my rear speakers hooked right to the back of the chair because of space requirements. This allows me to adjust them so they sound great in 5.1 situations despite the large variance in distance between rear, side and front speakers... I'm able to balance the volume so all 5 are equally as loud. People who are complaining about the software might be trying to use it way beyond what it was designed for (maybe some over the top production work..I dont know). They maybe running some miserable pc with junk hardware or its simply outdated. They may have not spent the few minutes to set things up right. In my case I went into BIOS and disabled the onboard audio, Uninstalled the Realtek drivers. I found some NVIDIA audio drivers as well sitting in "add or remove programs" uninstalled that too. I then Installed the card then the drivers. then went to "sound" (task bar search) and set "speakers Sound BlasterX AE-5" to default and made sure nothing else was check like monitor speakers or any of the NVIDIA Ouputs. The used the software to make the changes I wanted. So far Ive had no issue with windows not recognizing the software or the card its self. There is no humming or odd behavior from any of the speakers. The software loads quickly its currently using 0% CPU and 128mb of memory. Its been perfect so far with no odd behavior or annoying issues. This PC is modern, home built, less than 4 months old with win 10 pro.

My system has always ran like a Cadillac. This sound card causes boot issues. The reviews of this unit says it all. ~ I honestly have extreme buyers remorse. ~ Note To Sound Blaster: It is very clear that you guys devoted more effort towards gaming then sound. The last time I checked I was purchasing a 32 bit sound card. I could CARE less about the video game stuff, you guys have clearly cluttered your software with gaming stuff. I purchase video cards for gaming, not sound cards. You guys need to address many issues with this card immediately. Also a note on your SCOUT software,...just a idea,...get the boot issues fixed along with the software before you guys worry about useless added software. I would also like to express that your RGB software is the WORST I have seen yet. I have played with all the RGB software on the market to date. Hardware is not worth a flip when it has horrible software. It is a well known fact that as a company Sound Blaster is not in the best shape. You guys owned the pc sound industry at one time. If you guys keep on releasing junk like this and needless to say Sound Blaster will just be a memory. So don't listen to your customers, don't address the issues with your products. You guys will see where that gets you. I have been building PCs for 23 years. I have not purchased a Sound Blaster product in 10 years. I highly doubt I will purchase another Sound Blaster product in the future either. I can purchase a $35 motherboard that has much better sound software and zero boot issues.

Creative has a better headphone amp, but that's about all. Also, the AE lets you play back at 32 bit and 96000hz - which is a bit of a farce. There is no 24 bit 192000hz mode like previous cards offer.I think what they did with this card was remove a few features to cut costs and replace those features with crappy RGB lighting. So, in my opinion this card is not as good as the soundblaster Z, and the extra cost is for the RGB lighting - not the sound quality.Overall I rate this card a 7/10.Beware the fake reviews all over the internet claiming this card is the greatest Creative card of all time - because it isn't.

- I am not sure where a standard user or gamer will find an advantage with the ridiculously high bitrate. It seems like over kill to me, but may be future proofing. Honestly, I can't understand the negative reviews because I have run into no issues so far. The card does exactly as advertised. I just took out my old card, shoved this one right in, uninstalled the old drivers and installed the new ones, and I was ready to go. Not a single problem. Most negative reviews are because the card does not include features like DOLBY or DTS, but it was never advertised to include these. That's like saying a cheese pizza sucks because it doesn't include pepperoni, even though you intentionally ordered a cheese pizza. I understand if DOLBY or DTS sounded bad with the card, but that is just not the case as they do not exist in the card. I use this sound card with Audio-Technica ATH-A900X headphones. Combined they produce an incredible sound. However, my last sound card was a Sound Blaster Zx, and compared with the AE-5, I haven't been able to know any immediate difference. If I had to recommend one card between the two, I would recommend this one only because it is newer and it will have longer lasting driver support. If you already have a Sound Blaster Z, Zx, or ZxR, DO NOT UPGRADE. The difference will probably be unnoticeable for you as it is for me. I even downloaded some FLAC music files, and they still sound no better. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible card, but you should only buy this if you are looking to make a big jump from onboard audio or possibly because you are having issues with a current sound card. (The motherboard I installed this into is the ASUS PRIME X370 PRO, with a RYZEN 7 1800x CPU)

This card is absolutely worth the money if you have a very good speaker system and listen to lots of music or movies (in addition to games), however if you're a gamer who uses mostly a pair of nice headphones or smaller stereo speakers... while I'd like to support Creative Labs (they are the best in the business and have been for a long time), I must admit that onboard audio is quite close these days, and you may not notice a big difference (or none at all, of course, with separate audio devices like USB headphones). Worth the money? Yes, but only for the right kind of speaker system & audiophile!

I upgraded from their Sound Blaster Recon3d Fata1ity Pro. I've used both that card and the onboard sound, which uses a Realtek ALC892 chip.
