We bought two of these for Christmas. One was the R2D2 and the other BB-9E. The R2D2 is great. My 9 year old loves it. Decent battery life. Fun sounds. Easy to control. The BB-9E does not hold a charge. It continues to say battery is critically low even after days of charging. Looks cool but we have a very disappointed kid that couldn't play with it on Christmas and now Target is out of stock.

fist off, dont listen to someone who calls himself pizza... let me give this product the review it deserved.the BB-9E Sphero is Very Good just like most of the other phone controlled "toys" they make. it responds well with the app and it is a very neat star wars item, i love the "watch with me" feature and i love the fact they added "the empire strikes back" (at the time of typing this review) to the small line of movies they have. now downside wise i seriously wish they added i internal speaker to the toy like the R2-D2 model instead of it playing out of the phone, but i guess its because of its small size its understandable.overall its good but its not great HOWEVER if you want to give a neat give to your biggest star wars fan (Like me) they most defiantly get ... Morefist off, dont listen to someone who calls himself pizza... let me give this product the review it deserved.the BB-9E Sphero is Very Good just like most of the other phone controlled "toys" they make. it responds well with the app and it is a very neat star wars item, i love the "watch with me" feature and i love the fact they added "the empire strikes back" (at the time of typing this review) to the small line of movies they have. now downside wise i seriously wish they added i internal speaker to the toy like the R2-D2 model instead of it playing out of the phone, but i guess its because of its small size its understandable.overall its good but its not great HOWEVER if you want to give a neat give to your biggest star wars fan (Like me) they most defiantly get them this, its a very good product.May The Force Be With YouP.S. once again dont listen to a reviewer named something like Pizza.... seriously

Sphero Phone app controls the driod. Force band controls the droid. And has other play options on the forceband. Sound effects and an AR game. will connect with the force band software on the phone to train and play games. once updated it will control the driod without the mobile app running. but the forceband software app on the phone won't connect to the BB-9e driod. It will only connect to a Sphero BB-8 Droid.

The fluidity of movement is really nice. The sounds are nice, however they come from your phone and not from the BB-9. The autonomous mode is nice, it will roam around and make weird noises. However, I don't think it has an IR sensor, it bumps into walls and will fall down stairs. The VR trainer is not worth it; cruise around on a space ship but it's done within 5 minutes, there's nothing more to do here. Sphero does say it is programmable but I haven't tried it. It's a neat toy that just cruises around in your home, nothing more.
if you are ready for the jetsons age to begin this is it. A little twitchy till the new app update but now works very well. The most enjoyable experience is to send him on patrol and watch Artificial intelligence in its early stages of development. My dogs as well as the kids love him and the LED LIGHTS on his head really bring him to life. BB-8 has no lights and it ruins the effect. buy BB-9E instead and you will be richly rewarded.
When I first got this BB-9E and a BB-8 I thought they were just cool toys for my visiting grandchildren.. Then I found Sphero Edu and found they were much more. Programmable. Live on a boat so perfect size. They are pretty fast on a dance floor. Fascinated by the LEDs in the BB-9E head powered by induction and no wire attachments. Lots of YouTube videos.
We watched a lot of videos online before picking the BB Droid. It seemed like it handles uneven floors better than R2. In our experience it does great going from carpet to hardwood to tile without getting stuck. My son loves driving it around the house. He has just started the AR missions, but likes them so far. He is using an Ipad mini 2 for control. We had a tense moment when the head fell off, but it stuck back on with no residual effects.
He works pretty good on smooth surfaces, has a slower start on carpet but once momentum kicks in drives good. I live the fact his head has lights that illuminate whilst switched on, its a nice touch. Would love it if sphero had thought to integrate a small camera but maybe another time.. Mine was a factory refurbished unit and Ill be honest with exception to the box Id say it was as new.
Not worth the money; it’s a good collectible item or a “like to have”, no real value or purpose of this toy or robot. This is not something anyone should spend much money on given it’s really just a prop. I don’t see any use or application functions outside of just interacting with a very limited app and a robot that moves in various directions aimlessly.
mine has issues on carpet and our wood kitchen floor. the head part has fallen off about each time on the hardwood floors also...it gets to moving so fast it just hits something and the head goes flying. it's a well made toy, but for the price i wish it was easier to control and i also REALLY wish the droid made sounds and it didn't make the beeps through the app. I mean The R2 does it so why didn't they put a small speaker on this? it's still cool but again for the price i would expect more.
