I spent about a year trying to make the Spot Trace work as an anti-theft device on my 40 foot sailboat. Thank you, that is very helpful to know instead of just letting me waste my time for a year.I wanted my money back since the device does not work as advertised but Spot argued that the device actually tracked from time to time, so they wouldn't make a refund. I argued that it was like having a house alarm with a movement sensor that only detected Halloween Parties and claiming that it worked. They said they'd refund me $50 as a good-faith gesture.The money never showed up on my card though and this is pretty typical for the Spot support experience. They are happy to suggest solutions while on the phone but once the call is over I will have to call them back about any promises they made. for instance, it took 3 or 4 calls over a month or so to push them through the process of sending me a replacement device.The Spot Trace might work in a car or a trailer, or on a high-speed water craft, but personally I wouldn't trust it to and since Spot support seems to consider the device more of a toy than a safety device, I would look for a company with a more professional approach.

I tucked this GPS tracker into my purse because I wanted to test how accurate the location services were before tucking it into my sons back pack or attaching it to my child's car. After having it in my purse for a few weeks and taking it on several adventures, I was able to check the location of the GPS tracker when I got the email notification. The tracker was very close to being accurate. It may not be 100% but I would say its 99% accurate. The other 1% gave a general area but was off by a few hundred feet. I just replaced the batteries on my unit and found--again--that it had not been tracking for at least the last week, nor had it sent the "low battery" text that I signed up for.Spot Trace does not perform as advertised.My unit is on my bike with a clear view of the sky, right side up,set to ping every 30 minutes when motion is detected, and programed to send a text when the batteries get low.The first time that I found that I couldn't track the device, Customer Service said that the unit has to move approx. every few days in order for the low battery alert to work. The SPOT Trace is a very friendly and easy device to set up and use. You will need a screwdriver to open the battery compartment up and put your batteries in or replace them. Other than that, it's smooth sailing from then on. Knowing that this device runs on satellite and not a cell phone tower gives me great peace of mind. I currently have it in my car in the side door panel. It works perfectly btw. (The instructions say to have the logo side straight up but mine sits on its side) The main purpose in case it is ever stolen (Knock on wood that it doesn't) and also to keep track of anyone who may be driving the car just in case they end up lost or in a bad situation. Works as advertised and is very cheap compared to any other alternative on the market. Features dock mode for boats which works well and is water proof with the addon waterproof cable although the cable could be longer as it has a max length of 3 metres only. You also need a subscription for this device from the creators, however, I think the subscriptions are very reasonably priced and quite feature rich for the price. One thing which would be great is some other mounting options like a side mount so it could be attached to the side of a porthole on a boat, etc as it needs a view of the sky to work. It's small and simple to mount. It needs to be facing up for accurate tracing.
