The device is good looking and well made. However, setting it up is a lengthy process, and a bit clunky. I am still having issues getting it to work, despite following instructions and paying subscription. I think its a minor thing I'm doing wrong, but cant work it out. It currently is not getting any GPS signal, and when it does its fleeting. And it wont send out text messages. I paid for the activation fee and service plan (basic) for 12 months- was $215US, which ended up being $310 AUD, which is quite a lot. I just hope i can get it to work!

I regret not spending the money and getting something reliable. That was stupidity on my part and a mistake I won't make again. From now on I will try to steer as many people I can away from this product.

First, the good:1. It's way cheaper than a Garmin InReach. That's probably why you're looking at this product, right?2. It does what it says on the tin. You can send texts, receive texts, I assume that the S.O.S. service works (thankfully, I've never had to use it). You can look at a map of your route when you get home.3. Decent battery life. Now, the bad:1. Don't let it get wet! This seems like a strange thing to say about a device that's ostensibly built and marketed to wilderness adventurers, but I had an "incident" (read: dropped it in about six inches of water when transferring my portage bag into a canoe at a put-in) and it immediately became a useless brick.2. The Globalstar satellite network is not as extensive as the Iridium network, which is what is used by Spot's primary competitors.4. The software that you can use to track your trips after the fact is not exactly user-friendly. It seems like it would be useful if you were in charge of a group of workers out in the bush and had to keep track of them, but it does not seem like it's designed for the average backcountry trekker.5. Customer support - forget about it. You're on your own.If this were an otherwise excellent product, I'd probably go out and buy another one and just put it in a waterproof case. It's not an otherwise excellent product though, it's not even a particularly good one. From everything I've read, I would have been much better off with a Zoleo or Garmin device. I'd recommend going with either of those two alternate options even without having yet used them.

I was initially a bit annoyed about this product - there's the subscription you need to purchase separately (extra $500AUDish for 12month coverage) as well as a medical evacuation coverage that isn't included in the subscription either. Price is per person for that service. Not compulsory but we were inevitably glad we took out the extra coverage.Unfortunately I have had the experience of needing to use my spot x SOS function. I can say that because public health repatriation helicopters weren't available at the time I pushed the SOS button - spot x receivers were able to dispatch a privately owned one in order to complete our medical evacuation. Very handy and the communications centre promptly replied to my messages when I described the emergency we had (all ... MoreI was initially a bit annoyed about this product - there's the subscription you need to purchase separately (extra $500AUDish for 12month coverage) as well as a medical evacuation coverage that isn't included in the subscription either. Very handy and the communications centre promptly replied to my messages when I described the emergency we had (all turned out fine). But we were very remote and a good 2hrs bush hike (one way) from reliable phone reception. The account interface you need to use through spot x is quite confusing and the quick guide you can find online should be included with the product. The battery seems to drain quite quickly when tracking is enabled, which makes that feature superfluous if the reason you want it is to be able to press the SOS if you're out of phone reception. The battery in general does not seem to be that great. Messaging is slow and fickle though that's probably the nature of a satellite messaging service. It needs to be vertical with no obstructing trees/mountains/buildings to send.I feel a bit locked in with this product for now - it depends on what you want to be able to do in an emergency. If you want to be able to speak to someone - get a satellite phone, if you just want a "tap out" button get an eperb or if you want to be able to let your loved ones know you're ok with a text and be able to message emergency service personnel then this would be your pick.
SPOT X is primarily a communicator and tracking device that is added to an emergency locator. This device is NOT for navigation despite the fact that it has a compass and can do some basics. If you want a mapping & navigation device you need to look at other devices.I've been using a Spot X Bluetooth for over a month on on-road & off-road motorcycle trip and find it is great. Tracking works very well, my wife can follow my progress on a map at home, it drops electronic breadcrumbs every 10 minutes. The communications are the part that shine. The basic package, if you pay for the full year, front loads 120 custom use messages that you can use throughout your year. The basic package, if you pay for the full year, front loads 120 custom use messages that you can use throughout your year. But you also get UNLIMITED pre-written messages and you get 14 of those customizable pre-written messages. So before I head out on a trip I type various custom messages that allow me to say I'm making a quick stop, making an extended stop, in trouble, but I also can add things like '2-3 hour tourist stop, back on the road later' 'spending night at a hotel' and other such things that are more descriptive than the 2 or 3 messages that some other devices allow. Don't expect to carry on a text message conversation like you would on your iPhone but it is realistic to have a time-lapse conversation and with the unlimited use of the pre-written messages you can actually keep family/friends well informed.Transmission speed seems to vary from about 30 second to 5+ minutes, depending upon where in the sky the satellites are overhead, how thick the tree cover it, etc. But it seems to be very reliable in getting and sending the messages. With the addition of the Bluetooth there is no real added functionality but there is some added convenience.Unlike some others, I have no issues with the keypad. It is not as good as my old Blackberry or my old Treo, but it works well. People used to typing on a screen may have some issues because these are tactile keys.
I replaced a non-working globalstar phone with SpotX, which seemed to be just the ticket for communication and safety tracking in out-of-the-way places. Very, very disappointing. In my first year I spent many hours communicating with the company on "why didn't the SpotX do what it was supposed to." It's not just the 1985-type user interface: the product literally doesn't pick up a signal for up to 30 minutes!!! After much dialog with company employees I learned that the SpotX satellite pattern in the sky now has many holes in it. Sometimes in my tests, I would send a message in less than 5 minutes. Other times, 30 minutes. And sometimes that message would not send for man hours if my view of the sky was compressed, as it often is on a trail. My opinion is that the ... MoreI replaced a non-working globalstar phone with SpotX, which seemed to be just the ticket for communication and safety tracking in out-of-the-way places. And sometimes that message would not send for man hours if my view of the sky was compressed, as it often is on a trail. My opinion is that the company is struggling and cannot afford a full spread of satellites with its current pricing structure. Too bad. I'd pay more for the subscription if it really worked! But because it is hit-or-miss, SpotX cannot be regarded as a safety device. I tested the tracking, the texting, and several other features over a period of a year. I found it sorely lacking. But the unit is cheap, and the subscription can be had for only $99 if you bargain. So if you want to futz with a gadget, buy one. If you want to be safe, get an EPIRB.
My third Spot device (call me a slow learner). The original first gen spot was pretty good for what it did at the time. When I transitioned to Connect is when the real problems started. It was notoriously difficult to connect to my iPhone. I switched to this thinking no Bluetooth connection was required so what could go wrong. I had consistent issues trying to sync it with my account. I could get the latest firmware in only a couple tries, but syncing wouldn’t happen. A few calls to Spot support only brought renewed instructions on how to sync. It’s not a difficult process, it just doesn’t work. I’ve given up on them ever putting out a great product with great service.
I have owned this for 3 years. Previously it worked okay in the Rockies. However, last week in the Wind River Range of Wyoming it did not work at all relative to receiving messages. I updated all the software before the trip as usual. The issue was I could send but not recieve any replies from texts to Verizon and AT&T cell phones. I also could not receive texts that went to gmail or icloud. Having used the device for several seasons it *used* to work just fine with those carriers. Interestingly, I could send and receive from my buddy’s Garmin satellite system. There is really no recourse except to cancel the service and buy another product.
Let me say first that I really looked at lots of reviews on the Spot X before I purchased it. There are many good and then lots of bad reviews. In spite of the split opinions I took a chance on it. Let me say I am so impressed with this device. As a 50+ yr old solo sea kayaker this is what I and my family consider to be essential gear. It keeps me in touch when off shore or island hopping but also gives me the ability to call in SAR if I have a some type of medical emergency. Now there are a few other options that do the same thing or similar, but for the price this was the right choice for me. I have had no issues with reception, sending and receiving messages and the ability for my family to live track me works as described. After reading and watching lots of reviews I do think where you are located (I am in the southeastern/coastal part of the U.S.) an impact on getting good reception. It seems the further north you are the less likely your to get good reception. I believe this has to do with where the Globalstar satellites are located which as I have learned are more concentrated around the equator. For me this works and has become an essential device for my adventures. Hope this review helps someone.
After 1 year, the battery drains very rapidly. Expect no more than 4 short message uploads. Essentially means this thing needs to be kept turned off except for emergency. Good idea to bring an external battery pack that can provide 5v usb power. The user interface is just awful, including the bluetooth connected app on your phone. For example, you can't tell whether it has acquired a satellite signal, so you have no idea how long you might have to wait until it can send your message. They claim no more than 20 minutes, unless for some reason it's longer.
