Springbank Distillery, many a Scotch lover's cult favorite distillery, produces three different single malt whiskies at their home in Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula. The flagship, Springbank, represents the vast majority of their relatively very small annual production of 750,000 liters. It is 2.5 times distilled and lightly peated. Longrow is their twice distilled heavily peated malt, named for a now shuttered distillery down the road from them in Campbeltown. The third, and smallest in terms of annual production, is Hazelburn (also named for a shuttered Campbeltown distillery). Hazelburn is produced in a style rarely seen in Scotland, with it's triple distillation being more typically Irish in style. It is also completely unpeated, showing a much gentler side to Springbank's stellar malt. In addition to the standard 10 year Hazelburn bottling, Springbank also releases an annual 13 year old bottling. Unlike the 10 year, which is aged completely in ex-Bourbon casks, the 13 year brings Oloroso Sherry casks to the party. In previous years, this has meant 100% sherry aging, but for this release (Bottled April 2021) the cask makeup is 75% ex-Bourbon and 25% Sherry, resembling the profile of classic 10 year Springbank more than any previous Hazelburn release. On the nose there is an explosion of bright tropical fruit, especially mango and passionfruit. Pear, coconut, and pine sap follow. On the palate, custard, rhubarb, and summer flowers are up front, with that slightly dirty, musty Springbank signature lurking in the background. Bottled at 48.6% abv.
