Great option for beginner or adept bassists

I purchased this to replace my old Yamaha RBX774 bass that was stolen from me almost a decade ago. I wanted a P-Bass at the time, but my instructor steered me toward the Yamaha because it was a better "studio" instrument. This PJ was a 1/3 life crisis (hopefully hahaha) for me, I decided 2 weeks ago that I was going to grab one and it hasn't disappointed (for the most part). The bass itself is fantastic. It needed a few minor adjustments to really get it right, mainly the pickups were WAYY too close to the strings so I lowered them ever so, slightly and also adjusted the bridge a bit. Other than that, this bass has an undeniable "cool factor" to it.However, If i were to make this purchase all over again, I'd probably opt for just the solo bass. The amp is the absolute bare minimum for even practicing at home. I do have a very large, open living room that I play in so maybe that has something to do with it, but it seems like it clips and distorts far too easily. You cant really turn the knobs on the amp anything past half way without getting severe distortion and awful noises. Also, very minor, but the cable and strap they include are both TERRIBLE so even if you grab this starter pack, Id grab a better cable and strap immediately. My cable is already broken after literally a week of playing, sitting on the couch.Other than that, if were strictly speaking, the bass gets a 4.5/5 (only the half point off for the adjustments i made that others may not feel comfortable doing), the amp gets a 2.5/5, strap and cable are both a solid 1/5. Fortunately, both of those things are very cheap to upgrade so not a big deal.

Great starter bass.

I've been meaning to get into bass for a while, and when I saw this Squire Affinity on sale, I finally went for it.I was not disappointed! For a lower budget guitar, you get 2 sets of solid pickups, volume control on each, and a single tone. The frets will need some work, and the nut was cut a little too deep on the third string, causing some rattle, but not on the output. One of the tuning pegs isn't fastened on the gear, and it slides off easily, so I'll have to re-glue that. The fretboard was completely parched, but some lemon oil brought it right back to life. All minor inconveniences if you know how to care for your instrument. You can get a ton of interesting sounds varying the volume of each pickup and picking closer or further from them. Without any pedals or amp sims (just the preamp on my interface) I'm able to get basic booming bass, to overdriving and growling distortion. After adjusting pickup height, you don't sacrifice much clarity when driving it a little higher, either. The knobs are nice metal ones, but have no level markers. I'll probably swap them out for one that has them, otherwise it's hard to remember what they're all set at when you dial in a good sound. If you're interested in bass, but don't want to commit to something more expensive, this will probably be your best compromise. Down the road you can swap the pickups out for something higher end, and it will be like upgrading to a much more expensive bass for only a couple hundred and some time spent on soldering.

Besides looking bad*ss in black and maple, the volume, tones and character of this bass makes it easily one of my favorites. The neck is unusual in that it's completely void of urethane finish; it feels "raw" although very well-sanded. But my favorite feature are the pickups. Paired with my Acoustic B300HD/Fender Rumble 700w 2x10, the P pickup crushes my little studio with thunder. Wow. The J pup has the familiar "snappiness" and mid-freq presence so many modern bassists enjoy. I bought it primarily for practice and band rehearsals, and as a backup...but I now consider it good enough for gigs. Should you be on the fence about buying this bass, I suggest finding a GC that has one in stock/on a hanger and giving it a spin in person. Then you can compare it to Squier CV and Fender Mexi basses. The weak point, and is common with lower-priced basses, is fret sprout, sharp fret edges. But even so it's really not that bad. I hope I've helped you make an informed decision.

I LOVE this product
11 April 2024

A week or so after seeing Fall Out Boy in concert, I decided I wanted to start playing the bass (watch Pete Wentz kill it with a bass on fire, and try not to be inspired, I dare you). I went to 1 Guitar Center near me, and they were incredibly busy. I left empty handed as I was really hoping to talk to an employee or someone who plays the bass, so I could be turned in the right direction. I was dead set on getting a bass, so I drove 40 minutes to the next closest GC. I looked for a few minuets and saw a display of these kits, "what a great idea! For about the same price of a used bass and used amp, cords, straps... everything... I can get this new kit." I went to the desk and asked if someone could help me and talk to me about it first. The man who helped me said, "we are going to do this the right way. Let's put a P bass and a J bass in your hands. Feel them, tickle them, love on them, and we will decide what's best for you." I'll be honest, I felt like a wizard getting their wand (you know what book/movie I'm talking about). I decided on the P bass (according to the employee and my partner, my face lit up and we all knew it was the one for me). I grabbed a kit and rushed home to start playing. I don't typically like the "free lessons" included with things I buy (sewing machines, air fryers, whatever...) but let me tell you: Fender Play is AMAZING. I have been progressing so fast, I'm so proud of myself when I play a riff to a song I actually like (not Hot Cross Buns or Twinkle Twinkle)! The 3 free months of FP is reason enough you should get this kit. The bass is a great starter, it's cheap by all means, but all the more reason I don't feel bad about putting stickers on the frets as I learn cords. The strap it comes with is horrible, so do yourself a favor and invest in a good one. The amp does exactly what you need it to do. And the carrying case is not very protective, but it gets the job done, so just take extra care of your new baby. I would recommend this product to anyone new to the bass or someone getting back into it. It would be great for a teens and adults, as it is really heavy. There is a bit of fret buzz, but you either troubleshoot it, or learn to incorporate it into your jam sessions. Overall, this product was just what I needed to get started and fall in love with the bass.

Mainly a guitarist so this is my first large scale bass. There's some QC issues but I would expect that from a budget/starter instrument. The setup was good, truss needed a little tightening, string height was perfect surprisingly, and two strings had perfect intonation, one was quite a bit off, one slightly out.I found a few issues but not major. A few of the screws holding the bridge to the body were sticking up, no where close to holding it down. I removed some, drilled the hole slightly deeper and they are all snug now. Same with one screw on neck plate. The only other issue I spotted is that the low E string contacts the headstock behind the nut which caused damage to the finish. Same with one screw on neck plate. The only other issue I spotted is that the low E string contacts the headstock behind the nut which caused damage to the finish. Looks like could be caused by the string having too many wraps around the tuner putting it very low on the peg. I also removed the pick guard to clean up several spots in the finish that had debris sticking up causing the guard to not lay flat in some spots. The neck feels a bit wide for me, I'd likely prefer the Jazz neck width. The depth is surprisingly thin. I was expecting a baseball bat neck but it's closer to 60s les paul thin. The back of the neck feels unfinished. Says satin urethane on fender website but just feels like slightly rough unfinished wood to me. Only other thing is it has sharp fret ends. The inspection tag showed it was assembled in Sept 2022, I got it in Apr 2024 so unfortunately it was in the likely non-humidified musicians friend warehouse for a year and a half drying out, resulting in sharp frets.

For an Ex-display, it had some scruffs that can be cleaned and very few minor marks you wouldn't even see unless you pointed at it.The kit came with a 15w amp, which I've heard that in terms of 15w amps, the fender rumble is quite good, especially for beginners, however I would definitely consider getting a better 40w amp in the future once I get better at playing. But for a beginner £270-300 kit, I'm not going to complain. Although maybe a pick of some sort would be nice (but I understand the kits are bought from fender/squier so I am unaware of the control you have in this.)I don't know much about amps, but I feel as if there should be more variation/settings than just bass, mid and treble. Maybe most amps are simple like this, but I feel like no matter how I modify these variables it just doesn't sound as good as I thought it would be. Again, this is most probably because it's 15w and doesn't have the best speaker or whatever technology an amp has. I'm not going to pretend I know everything from just a week of playing. All in all, for a first time bass player/learner this kit will be good enough to learn how to play bass well until I get better and know if I want to pursue this hobby further, so I know if I want to buy a better bass and peripherals in a year or longer.

Review of Squier Affinity Precision Bass PJ Pack in 3-Color Sunburst with Rumble 15W Amp
7 December 2023

Squier is Fenders budget brand but Ok for beginners. You get what you pay for, the bass guitar is fairly heavy even for a bass, the Fender branded gig bag is OK. The amp cable supplied was flimsy and a connection came loose within a few hours. The Fender guitar strap was similar, Not very robust and a bass guitar strap needs good padding. This one wasn’t!The Fender Rumble amp was probably the best of the lot, plenty of volume for home use and good tone. Looks sturdy too so worth the purchase.

Review of Squier Affinity Precision Bass PJ in Lake Placid Blue
16 July 2024

Really happy with this bass. Its great for the money and just what I was looking for. I just needed something for recording purposes. Also, the lake placid blue looks even better in the flesh/wood. Even the set up straight out the box was decent. Only element that needed any adjustment was the pick-up height. All in all, really happywith my purcahse. Would definitely recommend this bass to friend, and i would replace if it was lost or stolen. Also great service from Andertons, as as well. I wouldn't buy from any other retailer now.

Thor Thunder in a Bass
4 July 2024

I bought this bass for rehearsing, gigging at "shady" nightclubs (where stolen gear was a kind of tradition), and for practicing at home. It is WAY better than that. Way. Besides its classic, handsome appearance, it has one of the most THUNDEROUS P-style pickups I ever heard. Thor thunderous! The jazz pup is merely okay; together with the P pup this bass gets impressive tone. But the P is the headliner, the star. The most significant weak point is the oh-so-common fret sprout, especially and mostly at the octave (aka 12th) frets area and above. As a precaution, after purchase, have a guitar tech do a fret job to eliminate the sprouting issue. Then you'll have a beautiful bass that plays as good as it looks, and you can give Thor's Thunderous pickup a huge ... MoreI bought this bass for rehearsing, gigging at "shady" nightclubs (where stolen gear was a kind of tradition), and for practicing at home. What a Nice Surprise
30 January 2024

On a whim I tried one of these at a local GC. I plugged it into an Ampeg combo amp--I forget the model--and put it through its paces. (I play for a local punk cover band locally; we're coming up on our 12th gig.) This bass was one of the biggest surprises I experienced over the last five years. The bridge pickup alone isn't very impressive, but the split coil is thunderous! With both pups on full blast it's tight, snappy, room-penetrating. I liked it so much I returned a few days later to buy it. Okay, it's got minor fret sprouting, its tuners are average. But I love the super-smooth, polyurethane-free neck. Nice rosewood fingerboard, too. It's primarily for practice/rehearsal, but I think it'd do nicely for gigs...a good backup axe.
