Bought this item to use with 3 video capture usb inputs, and had trouble using them when all three were plugged into this hub. I had to plug one directly into the laptop, and the other 2 into the hub to make the setup more reliable. Haven’t tried using hub in any other scenario, so I’m unsure if it’s possible to use all 4 ports simultaneously with solid reliability.

Just getting the obligatory part out of the way, StarTech was kind enough to ofer me this in exchange for an unbaised review. They legitimately mean it when they make the offer which shows a lot of character for a company. I was already a big fan and can understand why they can make sure offers.First off although not required it does offer the ability to run directly against a USB port or use a power source. This is big these days when you constantly find yourself in need of a charger. Nothing earth shattering about that but why I figured it's worth mentioning is they kept the size small. Again, I'm thinking of another similar item I had purchased that is about 1/2 inch less wide, virtually the same lenght, but only supports 3 ports and always gives the "Slow charge" message on most of the devices I use to charge it.The next thing, and this is SOP with them is that it just has a really nice build to it. Someone put some thought into aesthetics and making it work and I think it's just really well done. It doesn't look cheap, it's pretty much as perfect a size as you could ask for wasting no space but leaving plenty that you're never trying to struggle when keeping it full of items.Next is the connection. While you'd think that's a given, pretty much any 3.0 adapter will be faster than a 2.0 counterpart but my step-father is an engineer and we were just geeking out one day, ran some tests and saw that each port was amazingly consistent. Chances are you'd never notice or really have cause to dig that deep into a HUB but trust me ,cell phone batteries do explode and having consistent reliable connectivity and power, not to mention having them whether there's one device hooked up or all of them are, it's a huge benefit. It's one of those hidden gems they don't advertise or even highlight but you just get when you buy one of their products.Yes, I paid for the other one and this one is free but as I said, StarTech made it clear that reviews were to be unbaised and we are free to speak our minds. I am. As you can tell by my other reviews I'm a fan of the company and there's a good reason for it - they build really solid equipment at more than reasonable prices. I probably have a good 50 of their products and have never had anything even approaching a problem (I've had to call tech support b/c of an ID10T error but they can't be blamed for that).Don't waste your time with the cheaper knock offs, get the real thing. This is a phenomenal piece of equipment and worth every penny - my first one was free, but the extras I purchased to use with several different items, including the Intel Edison, the UDOO QUAD, the Raspberry PI 3 as well as my laptop all ended up being impressive

Good basic 4-port USB 3.0 hub. I highly recommend using the included power adapter to power the hub so that each port has full power available should you use a higher power draw device like a USB power disk drive. The included power only charging port is kind of silly though as it might cause confusion. The other problem for some uses is that the four ports are fairly close together, and some devices or cables might interfere with one another. It would have been better to put two ports on each side instead of lining all four ports up on the one side.

I think this is a great deal for a 4-port 3.0 USB port. For some consumers who aren't familiar with 3.0 yet here are some things to consider: 1. They ARE backward compatible, meaning you can use your 2.0 USB devices with this. 2. While there is only one dedicated charging port the other 3 ports will charge SOME devices. For example, we were able to get the other ports to charge our kids' kindles, they would not charge any of our Apple devices. With that being said, the dedicated charging port did charge our iPhones and iPad without any issues. 3. This comes with a variety of adapters so you can plug this into practically any outlet imaginable. But you DO need to have an outlet nearby as this won't run off of your laptop's power. This comes with a variety of adapters so you can plug this into practically any outlet imaginable. But you DO need to have an outlet nearby as this won't run off of your laptop's power. You have to have the unit plugged into a wall for it to work. The devices I plugged in had no issues as far as speed of access through my computer. I was able to access and play files without any issues. Speed of access wasn't a problem. With that being said, the ports are really close together so you may not be able to use all of them at once depending on the type/size of USB device you are trying to plug into it. For example, if you're trying to plug in thumb drives you may not be able to fit four in at a time. Overall I am happy with this product. I feel like they should have made all of them charging and data ports so I could charge Apple products on more than just the single dedicated charging port. That and I wish they would have spaced out the ports a bit more. Those reasons are why it's getting 4 stars instead of 5. It is still a good buy in my opinion, however, and a great way to add some peripherals to your computer if you're limited on USB ports.

I was so excited to get this. My new all-in-one Dell has only 2 USB ports, so this gives me four times as many. I can plug multiple USB devices into each of 4 ports on the StarTech and therefore, I have everything I need. Many things are wireless now but much of my older equipment, such as my external backup drives, are not, and my oldest printers need to be hooked into the computer. This works perfect, and I get just as much juice as I did when I put one USB device into one port. With 3 devices to each port, it runs without a hitch! Woo Hoo!

I've gotten a few different StarTech USB 3.0 usbs with extra ports for charging, and all have works perfectly. This one however, is acting a bit oddly. I bought it for my Raspberry Pi 3, and I use this both as a means of powering the Pi (via the charging port) and as a powered hub. The Pi gets good power and all works there. My bus powered USB hard drive works great in the hub, and the hub means that the Pi isn't using power to power the drive. So far so good. My two USB peripherals (Steel Series mouse and generic keyboard) won't work via the hub. They light for a second then the port goes dark. Both work directly plugged into the Pi. I haven't sued the Pi much, and I haven't used it with any other hub, but I cannot fathom why it wouldn't work. I tried this on my PC (where I'm using a similar though larger hub), and all works well. For now 4 stars, as I cannot pinpoint the root issue with the Pi. It works fine with my PC. The build is rather cheap, but depending on the price you pay, nothing unexpected. The power brick is a bit large, but nothing unusual for powered USB hubs.

Pros: Powered. Auto detected on Windows 10 and driver downloaded. You can plug multiple jump drives in, the spacing is far enough apart for most USB sticks. I have a couple that are a little wider than normal and it can be hard to get those plugged in side by side. Useful for when your computer is short on USB hubs. Cons: It will not charge if the computer it is hooked up to is not on. This is really annoying Would not work with my scanner. Power cord is short and has HUGE wall wart. Samsung tablet complained about the charging port, saying it was slow. You really do need to have it plugged in. I tried to transfer some photos from the computer to a jump drive and it would not see the drive consistently, it kept dropping it (that annoying disconnect/connect sound) ... MorePros: Powered. This is a new brand for me and so far I'm very pleased with their products. I tested all 5 ports using a thumb drive, 1TB portable, a printer, and an iPad. Charging and data transfer were comparable to directly plugging into my computer. The port connections are solid and the standard blue lights show which ports are active with the exception of the charging port. The power cord length is industry standard and the USB 3 cable is 3' which should be adequate for most situations. The Hub and "brick" are larger and slightly heavier than the hubs I've been using. That usually translates into more robust parts lasting longer based on my work experience in the industry. I’ve had some hubs die after a couple of years. Almost of my drives are now USB 3. So I need USB 3 hubs. I’ve relegated my USB 2 hubs to printers and thumb drives. The international wall plugs will be helpful to those traveling.

This USB 3.0 Hub by Startech.com is about the size of a deck of cards came with a connector cable as well as a power adapter, for two was to power the the device. Although I find adapter`s a bit much extra to carry, the USB port works just fine. There are 5 ports in total , one being a dedicated to power and main connected input/output and the other four are client/command input ports. From my test on a 2.0 USB transfer speed averaged around 35/mbps and on 3.0 the speed averages around 100/mbps. Totally worth it if the main connected device is also a 3.0 port. I`ve compared this to an older Thermaltake Hub (2.0) and the speed is quite noticeable. The older hub has one advantage, it has a port you can place sata hard drives (both laptop and PC) in for external hard ... MoreThis USB 3.0 Hub by Startech.com is about the size of a deck of cards came with a connector cable as well as a power adapter, for two was to power the the device. This four port hub is being used on a desktop PC that has only one USB 3.0 port. When I plug this device into that port I can connect four USB 3.0 data devices, and one device for charging only, so this device actually has a total of five ports. To power and operate the four data ports, included is a 39 inch USB 3.0 A to B cable. Each port has a blue LED light that glows when in use. The port on the end is the dedicated charging port and it only works if the hub is plugged into the wall with the included AC adapter cable. The adapter is capable of switching between 100 and 240 volts and four different snap-in plugs for international and domestic use are included. The cable is 45 inches long so the connection needs to be somewhat close to the wall. The other four ports are situated together on one side. Using all four ports at the same time is dependent upon the size of the housing on the cable plugs. I plugged-in an external hard drive, a thumb drive, an Android tablet and a USB sharing device and all worked as expected. I also had no problem charging my iPod using any one of these four data ports even when not using the AC adapter, but that is my only iOS device. An Android smart phone, a Fire tablet, an Android tablet and a power bank all charged in these four ports without a problem. Speed of data transfers and back-ups to and from devices plugged into the hub were very fast with no delays. Charging in the dedicated port is much faster than in the other ports. The device has provided additional functionality and convenience. Now multiple devices can be plugged in through the one port at the back of my computer with the hub in an accessible location at the front. After a couple of weeks of use I have encountered no issues.
