As others have said, this powered version of Startech's USB hub is great for external USB drives. I use this to power up the external drive for my kids Xbox and we've never had a glitch. Before using this, the hard drive acted a little flaky at times...now I think it was a power issue given all else was the same. For the size, it seems a bit pricey, but if it addresses your needs then maybe its a justified price point for happiness or satisfaction. Cheers! RC

I needed a solid hub for all my peripherals for a KVM switch to go between my work computer and home computer, this fits the bill perfectly. I will be honest and say I chose this hub on brand recognition as I had purchased other products and cables in the past from Star Tech and never had any issues with them. So when I needed to turn my home office into a permanent workspace instead of a temporary one, I went with them again. Wasn't sure why they asked me to rate camera quality on a USB hub, but it actually is relevant, since I have two 4K video conferencing webcams attached and they work great.

I've probably spent way too much time trying to find a good reliable USB 3.0 hub for use with external drives and flash drives. This 4 port hub seems to be one of the best choices for that use case right now. I've tested it with USB 3.0 storage devices on both Linux & WIndows and it works, giving actual USB 3.0 speeds. It does come with an external 2A power supply, so it can power typical external 2.5" external storage devices and I suppose it can be used for charging too, but this hub's design seems optimized more for high speed data. I didn't notice the hub getting too warm when testing external drive speed tests.

This USB hub works as advertised. You will expand your USB connectivity and your circle of admirers when you hook this hub up to your Windows 10 computer and start plugging in Webcams, USB drives, and whatever else USB things you can get. I had to rate the Camera Quality as a 1 since it can't take pictures. I would have thought Home Essentials Direct would have known that, but I know that Home Essentials Direct has a lot on its mind these days, with the divorce and Lauren Sanchez and helicopters, and maybe Home Essentials Direct got it confused with a Canon 60D digital camera which can also connect via USB cable.
My company included this with all my other devices, laptop, monitor, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, wireless headset. Fantastic idea since only 2 USB ports on my laptop and 3 wireless devices provided, worked fine at first but, after 2 months, kept getting the chime that something was not working, moved it to the second USB port, fine then one month later, today, same chime, plugged my two usb connectors into the laptop and working fine, so, obviously something is up with this hub.
Worked great for a bit. I used it to connect my synthesizers but had to return one because it stopped working as a hub. and the replacement I got is doing the same thing. It still works as a usb charger and all but it no longer acts as a hub for merging data. a pretty expensive disappointment,
Works as advertised. Only negative for potential buyers is that it is very light and flimsy - but I notice this more as connected to a desktop PC. If you do purchase this for a desktop, recommend purchasing an extension cable as I did. This 4-port is much better suited for portability and laptop use. But, no concerns on my end. Works great!! Allows more than 1 device to function as if adding more USB ports to your computer. I was hoping I could set up dual headsets on Windows 10, so both could hear and use the microphone at the same time, but it treats the devices as totally separate... which is what it was supposed to do, but I was hoping I could anyway. Had to try!
