I have been using this product for a few weeks now to duplicate drives and connect drives to my computer via USB. So far everything has been working well.I have used this device with many different sizes, types and brand of drives.The duplicator came with USB and eSATA cables for the computer as well as power adapter with ends for multiple countries. The cables are only about 1 meter, which I wish were longer, but I could purchase new ones if it becomes an issue. I have purchased the SAT2IDEADP separately so that I could also connect some old IDE drives (works flawlessly with this). This allows for picking and choosing which data to copy between two disks as well as multitasking between different tasks. The data transfer is very fast over USB 3.0 and keeps up with the expected disk speed. I have not tested using eSATA as I don't have this port on any of my devices. In Windows 10 with USB connected, there is no setup required. Just plug it in, turn it on and when a disk is connected it immediately pops up in Windows ready for use. Disk duplication is pretty fast (not fantastic but close), but I like that my computer isn't needed and I can leave it to run overnight or while I do other tasks.This is an essential tool for any person task with supporting desktop or laptop computers. I use this device for disk backups, file recovery, drive migrations, disk upgrades, off-line disk access, wiping disks and many other troubleshooting tasks.One wish (not a deal breaker): After I duplicate a drive I have to wipe the original. This requires a connected computer with appropriate software and hours continuous operation. If this option were available it would be beyond excellent.The device is very solid and doesn't move around the desk when the disks are being used. The case is made of plastic but the internals and eject mechanisms are sturdy metal. I expect this product will last a long time and looks very professional when on my desk.So far I am very happy with this product and will continue to use it often. I have been searching for a way to clone Rollback Rx from one harddrive to another without losing snapshots. This worked flawlessly. This is a godsend since I and other Rollback Rx users have struggled for years to clone without using snapshots. (Drive Cloner Rx 6 is supposed does this, but I couldn't get that program to work. The only program that has worked for me is EaseUS Disk Copy, which is free, but doesn't always recognize the external drive.) One caveat, my source and destination drives were identical. So, I can't vouch regarding whether this would work as well if the hard drives were not identical. (I am cloning two Samsung 850 EVO 250 gb.) In addition, putting both drives in the unit works dramatically faster than the usual method of cloning where the source drive is in the computer and the destination drive is attached by a port. I noticed comments by other posters about difficulties telling which was space was for source drive and which was destination drive. It is marked on the unit, though the print is small. I think the problem is that putting the source in slot 2 (back) and destination slot 1 (front) seems counter-intuitive. However, it makes sense when you realize that the front slot is the one used when cloning from your computer. Therefore, the destination drive always goes in the front regardless of where the source drive is. Controls are easy. Construction is good.

These are available from 1 TB all the way up to 6 TB, some with a cache and some with not. The first thing to point out is that these drives are the old standard 5400 rpm magnetic drives. They have their own power supply and are fully enclosed. Over the years I have gone through several of them, averaging maybe two years per drive. I am told this is about the expected lifetime of these drives as they are constantly running. The drive would almost lock-up because it could not physically keep up with the amount of data that was being written and read. I own (2) 3 TB Phantom Drives and I also noticed the closer they got to being full there would be a direct correlation to how fast the DVR could seek data. It seemed to me the more they got full it would drop the seek times down to a point where you could notice. So, I did some looking around for an alternative, but I had yet to run into anyone that was not using the same Phantom Drives as I was. After looking at several different drive docks I decided on the StarTech Dual Bay Duplicator Dock. Like the Phantom Drives I also hooked the StarTech dock up to my DVR via the eSATA port on the back. And just like the Phantom Drives, when you first turn on the power button while simultaneously pushing the DVR reset button the Direct TV DVR would automatically format the new drive that I had in the StarTech dock. Because of the issues I had experienced when trying to do multiple tasks with the Phantom Drives, I decided on a WD 7200 rpm Black Series HDD for the dock. Yes, the immediate "out of pocket" costs are more than that of an equal size Phantom Drive, but I believe that because I am using a faster and higher quality drive than what they put in the Phantom Drives. In the long run the extra $50 in difference would pay off in the long run by better performance and a longer drive life. Finally, I have seen people post questions in the past about the possibility of using this dock with your choice of HDD as an alternative. But up until now I have not seen anyone post a different solution. And I know that there are tens of thousands of people who use an External drive to expand the storage capability of their Direct TV DVR. Well, now you have an alternative to the Phantom Drives. The WD 7200 rpm Black series that I purchased only cost $92 and also has a 64 MB cache, which the current Phantom Drives that I have do not. A 2 TB with a 64 MB cache Phantom Drive currently sells on Home Essentials Direct for only $105. But I really do think in the long run that I will be glad I spent the extra money to go the route that I did. Also there is one thing I have not yet done and that is to hook up one of the Phantom Drives to the StarTech dock and use the "duplicating" feature to copy all of the contents from that drive onto a regular 7200 rpm loose drive. As we all know when the Phantom Drives do fail, all of the time you spent building up your library of movies is lost! Now all of you Direct TV customers have a choice! Happy recording!! David

Rather, it's a dock that slots one drive and cradles a second while you use an ide cable to access it--two VERY different things. The second "slot" just has a foam pad at the bottom. Talk about misleading! Beyond this, the functional parts that DO exist are in a sorry state. This can be a problem if the drive is in use - that said i don't move them when in use now.

Startech all the way. I picked one of these up several months back on sale to upgrade my older Startech USB 2.0 cloning station (mostly used as a docking station). I had originally tried some other brand (had the opaque plastic door/cover that closes over the HDD) and it just didn't work at all. I used this Startech unit recently to clone a 2TB storage HDD to a 3TB HDD (converted to GPT of course). The 2TB was 1/4 full; it only took 1.5 hours to move everything to the larger drive, which was MUCH faster than my previous setup. Startech is true plug-and-play unlike some of the other brands. I've never had an issue with Startech equipment, and have never had a failure. I still use the old cloner connected to my router for my NAS. The second slot on the top has nothing in it. Even though it APPEARS on the photos to be usable. It is not. You can hook up 1 sata drive... And one IDE Drive. Thats it. 1 Of each. Im not sure why it HAD to have the second slot lol. Im guessing they just re-used the case from the other model to save money. For the record though... Its that one slot from being a great product. Hoping I can find one I can still use for cloning Sata drives, but includes an IDE interface as well. This works for the one project I needed it for... Otherwise I dont know what Im going to do with it hahahahaha.

Today, for the first time, I used the power switches to turn the two drives off and eject them to check for dust and possible other debris. Looked clean as new, put the drives back in and switched them on and the computer no longer sees the docking station. Checked the hard drives using another tool and they're fine. Made sure the USB port was working and it's fine. Hooked it all up to another computer and it wouldn't see it. Don't use the power switches or you might screw up the docking station. While I realize that it might have outlived itself, turning it off and then on should have no effect whatsoever. That is screwed up.
