On MacBook's the USB port works with no issue, no installation of drivers needed; however to get the NIC working you have to install drivers to get network connectivity. The NIC port doesn't seem to have a clip or latch; so when network cables are plugged in they don't stay securely connected and come unplugged easily.Overall just seems like this could have been designed better than it was.

Feels cheap and seems like it won't last long. Ethernet connectors do not lock when plugged in to the jack on adapter I received. Maybe mine is defective, but there are no signs of damage. I discovered this flaw when I tried to use the adapter. For work. In a datacenter when I *needed* ethernet connectivity. Fortunately my trusty USB(A) to Ethernet adapter (also a StarTech) saved the day. Unfortunately I didn't test this adapter when I received it and I can no longer return it. StarTech makes great products. This isn't one of them.
The Star-Tech USB- C Gigabit Network Adapter with USB Type A Port worked great for me. The small size of the adapter made it super portable and easy for use with my laptop. The blazing fast speeds of the gigabit network adapter gave my laptop full wired lan networking capabilities. Setup was a breeze and the device works flawlessly for me. The built-in USB port is a great addition and allowed even more accessibility for my laptop. Good things can come in small packages.I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.
I have a problem with my laptop's Gigabit PCIe Ethernet controller and Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. I have try everything, still my Ethernet connection is stuck at 100Mbps. Buy this device, plug it into my computer and reboot. Windows 10 build a new network connection at 1 gigabit/s in seconds (speed verified with Lan Speed Test). Voilà!! Quick and easy.
After the MacOS update to Big Sur, this network adapter no longer works because it uses a legacy extension, which Apple deprecated. They had many months to update their drivers for Big Sur, but failed to. They also failed to update their product pages to give this information and status of any driver updates. If they update their drivers, functionally consider this review 5 stars -- I've been using the adapter for a couple of years without issue until now. Or maybe 3 stars given if there is ever a case like this in the future, there is little confidence they will be prepared nor provide information.
Purchased in May 2018 worked on my 2016 Macbook pro, High Sierra, until update to Mojava 10.14.2 a few weeks ago . It no longer appears in the Network selection choices. Clicking on the + shows the driver is available but when selected and attempted to create it still does not appear as a choice. Have downloaded latest driver from Star Tech site, removed and reinstalled no success. either the driver doesn't work with 10.14.2 or it has failed. It does show up under system hardware and the USB connecter on it does work. Looks like a driver issue to me but site makes no reference to an issue or fix for 10.14.2. Wasted hours trying to get it to work again. ------ UPDATE After several Mac OS updates (at 10.14.5 now) I really needed to get on ethernet so I decided to plug ... Wasted hours trying to get it to work again. ------ UPDATE After several Mac OS updates (at 10.14.5 now) I really needed to get on ethernet so I decided to plug in the ethernet adapter again to see if I could get it to work. I was amazed when it just worked. I was unable to find why it stopped with updating to 10.14.2 or why it worked again when updating to 10.14.5 but it did. When I think of the hours upon hours I spent searching for a resolution, found others with the same issue but no fix that worked, and the issue cleared up by itself with apparently another Mac OS update to 10.14.5. So glad it is working now but why it quit is still a mystery to me.
Very simple and fast. This is truly plug and play. Plug it into your USB-C computer and you have a gigabit NIC. Don't have a USB-C port, then plug into a USB-A cable into this device.
Works as advertised. I had a few issues early on but it was an issue with the laptop drivers... once those got fixed, it's been rock solid.
