I’ve grow accustomed to single malt scotches such as Glenmorangie 18-yr old, Jura and Aberfeldy so it was with some trepidation that I braved opening a sample dozen of Australian whiskies - especially after a friend suggested I’d wasted my money! After tasting the first one, I had to agree with him, but, the Nova was the next to be sampled and I was truly shocked! This is a fantastic single malt! Don’t be surprised that once word gets around, it will double in price. Well done to the Starward distillers! (Sorry fellas, my loyalty to Scottish malts forbids me to give you five stars.)

I found Nova enjoyable. But I am aware that you seem to specialise in small batch. I have found with you twofold that the second bottle was noticeably better than the first one. So I dringk whisky for the taste. Nova is so much better than brands like Johnny Walker and Black Douglas which are disappointing blends. So now you have impressed me with your other small batch productss and hence the standard I am applying may be a little unfair. But then again I will never buy Johnny Walker of Black douglas these days. So Nova was good but not as good as I had hoped given its aged a little more and cost more.

I had no expectations, thinking it could be a little strange, perhaps winey or sweet, but I was not expecting something unpalatable. Normally I drink the likes of Bunnahabhain or Balvenie Double or Triple Wood, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find a very balanced premium single malt with just the slightest tinge of the red wine barrels. Nova is up there with the best of them. With water or neat only please. Highly recommended.

The Whisky is outstanding. Wonderful flavours and so smooth. It certainly deserves all the awards it can get. Thank you.Thank you also for the prompt delivery!
Being a life long JW drinker, i've become quite acustomed to the charred taste.... Never did i imagine that the combination of the fruity flavours and the subtle choclatey/caramel taste really had me captured! i'm Hooked..... Bravo!
Loved my samples of the Starward whiskies, which is a great way to try before you buy the full bottle too. Generally the Starward Nova is my everyday drinker, but the WL Barrel Pick is a marvelous hybrid between the Nova and Solera IMO. It's quite rich in flavour with lots of Christmas cake and brandied raisins on the nose and really quite smooth to drink despite it's 58.3% strength. Quite a floral and spicy dram on the finish, with some pepperiness tingle on the front of the tongue to boot. Ripper whisky, def worth the buy.
The tasting pack is the best way to get to try these amazing Whisky's before buying the bottle. Packed with fruit and spice - showcases all that is brilliant about modern Aussie distilling. The flavours most certainly come through. A great Whisky to enjoy at leisure and shared with friends.
I was lucky enough to try the Starward / Whisky Loot Single Barrel and to say I was excited was an understatement. It’s not often you get to sample a cask strength, wet fill, French oak Starward and this one does not disappoint. Everything about Whisky Loot is classy, refined and entices all levels of whisky drinker - from the packaging, to the tasting notes and flavour wheel it all is part of the experience. Now to the whisky, all the trademark Starward red wine notes, but then spice, red fruits, coffee and dark chocolate. With a long finish this is a whisky to relax, savour and of course share with friends.
Last evening, I took a virtual trip to the far north coast of Scotland. Today, I virtually venture south… far, far south… to Melbourne, Australia. Yes, they now have single malt distilleries down-undah (at least one). They make some pretty decent wines, and the casks go directly to the Starward distillery for aging their single malts. Nova is a single barley malt, similar to scotch whisky. They only age their whisky for 3 years, due to the unique weather (see explanation below). First drinking with the eyes, it is a beautifully rich color – I’ve never seen a young whisky with this depth of color. The nose detects some freshly-sliced strawberry wafting in the air. A small sip explodes with honey and cinnamon, with the wine-cask finishing becoming very apparent, carrying through the finish… then the fresh strawberries reappear. I would not have believed a 3-year aging could produce this depth of flavor. Very nice.
Most whiskey drinkers have their favorites, often reluctant to change. Well I for one have changed and with good reason. From the very first sip I was in awe, right to the last. Such a smooth tipple, with a flavor that is astounding. Those stalwarts, who refuse to move on from the single malt Scottish variety will be pleasantly surprised. All this and more from our very own Melbourne. Tradition, plus quality are in abundance, but not without the spirit for adventure; synonymous with Australian finery.
