This 5.75 quart Coq au Vin cocotte sits on top of my cook top at all times. Absolutely stunning, and really add charm to my kitchen. Love the workmanship that goes into creating each pan, makes for a one of a kind piece. This cocotte is also great for just about every cooking technique. I've used this for, stewing, braising, deep frying, roasting and baking. Extremely versatile! The cast iron enamel does not need seasoning, and stays nice and shiny. The more it's used the less it sticks, so I use very little oil when cooking. The dark interior is also stain resistant, and really helps achieve nice color on both proteins and vegetable. The lid is nice and heavy, which helps keep all those great juices inside the pan by preventing escape and evaporation. This cocotte is a classic and should be a staple in all kitchens. The dark matte interior heats evenly, and holds on to the heat, so no hot spots. Great for stew, chili, soups, sauces, braises, and of course Coq au Vin. Looks great on the table as well as keeps the food nice and hot.Staub is made in France and is resistant to chipping which is why I have also seen it being used in some of the restaurants my husband and I frequent. The beautiful enamel is three dimensional, and the piece is truly a visual work of art. But don't let that fool you, the cocotte is constructed in such a way that it really helps add flavor, color and professional results to your cooking. This pan has truly elevated my cooking.

I have both the 4.25qt and 8.5qt oval Staubs in sapphire. The 4.25qt is great as it fits in my countertop oven with the lid on (regular knob vs rooster), and it is just big enough for a 4-5lb chicken/roast. It's a great size for my 2-person household, allowing for leftovers. You can brown on stovetop with ease on a regular burner in the 4.25qt. I'll note that you can put parchment paper between the lid and the roast to make cleanup easier. The 8.5 qt can of course fits twice that amount but requires 2 burners on the stovetop to brown. This pot is more suited to the preparation made in the full-size oven. It's great for gatherings and large roasts or full rib racks. The weight of the pot is substantial; it still fits in my oversized sink. Both sit on display in my ... MoreI have both the 4.25qt and 8.5qt oval Staubs in sapphire. I've never owned a dutch oven, even though I have a lot of kitchen items! I cook almost all of our meals either inside or outside (gas grill and kamado grill). This is a welcome addition to my kitchen. Growing up, I remember my aunt cooking with LC. After some research, I chose Staub. I prefer the dark enamel interior which has been easy to clean. And the basting system in the lid works really well. I chose grenadine, which is stunning! All the colors are beautiful.Personally, the oval shape was the way to go for a first piece, working well with a chicken (well, our family prefers capons) or roast as well as standard recipes. The flat bottom allows you to have a large area to brown meat vs the rounded bottoms. The flat bottom allows you to have a large area to brown meat vs the rounded bottoms. The size is also versatile for many recipes, but larger families (6 or more) might want to consider a bigger version. This oven is fairly heavy, but all cast iron ovens will be heavy. The rooster finial is great. A whimsical touch that is also very practical! The larger uneven shape makes grabbing the lid with an oven mitt very easy and secure. It is large to store, but luckily I have plenty of cabinet storage. My favorite recipe in this dutch oven is America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Illustrated French Style Pot Roasted Pork Loin. I was surprised to find the best pork roast I have ever tasted after only 1 hour in a 225 degree oven. It was tender and juicy and flavorful - and reheated the next day to be just as good...Now to find more good recipes!
I am doing my 1st ever Asso Bucco today using the MeatEater Cookbook recipe and Buffalo Shanks. Smells awesome! This pot is "HEAVY" and the top fits TIGHT. Nothing is escaping except incredible aromas.I'm looking forward to many wild game dinners in the future. Thanks for offering this product.
This oval had been in my bucket lust for a long time.. started out with 4 Qt Round on sale. When I found this oval on sale I jumped at it & am glad I did. I use it more often, it holds more & bigger variety of cuts of meat as well. Staub makes a top quality product & I love that with the black interior I’m not obsessing over the clean up like I would be with a Le C… the spikes on the lid really do distribute the moisture back into your meal as a bonus. Very happy with all my Staub pieces & my collection is growing! When my non stick old pots/pans wear out I’ll never need to replace them as I now how THE best in Staub.
This cast iron enameled Cocotte is gorgeous, first of all! The rooster handle is a fun accent to have! But, you buy a piece of cookware to use and this does not disappoint. It's the perfect size for soup, pasta, a roast or a whole chicken. Everything turns out amazingly well and it's a snap to clean. If you happen to burn a little, just let it soak and out comes the remainder. I think the bottom line is that cast iron just cooks better. And you'll enjoy the benefits of cooking in this oval Cocotte for a very long time.
Cooks amazing - checkDistributes heat - checkVersatile - checkBeautiful - checkI love this item! I love looking at it - I love cooking with it - it makes me so happy! I purchased at WS because I love the grenadine color for a farmhouse style kitchen. I leave it out on the stove because I use it all the time and it looks wonderful. The rooster really adds some style for that farmhouse look - but the regular knob is available as well. The innovative lid keeps moisture in. I have purchased more pots - but this is my hands down go to!You will never need to replace this! It is a lifetime investment and doesn’t disappoint!
I purchased this Dutch oven many years ago in grenadine and it has been a champ in my kitchen for at least 10 years (I know, I'm only now getting around to a review). It is such a great size and shape, I use it for so much from pot roasts, to stews, and of course Coq au vin it makes everything taste great. I call it my magic pot because it cooks everything so perfectly. The finish has held up great over the years and I've had no problems with it. I'm pretty sure it will be in perfect shape to pass onto my kids someday. I bought my chef son one in cherry red as a Christmas present. It's a true kitchen work horse.
So many dutch ovens are round. I really like the oval design on this one. The natural properties of cast iron make it heat very evenly and hold temperature for a long time. The enamel coating means no seasoning and easy cleanup. The black matte interior gives great browning and the braising spikes on the lid keep my food moist. I like doing a whole chicken in here but even more i like to do a nice long braise in pieces. The rooster knob is available separately but comes with this model......bonus. The exterior enamel color is super attractive and is so much easier to clean than regular cast iron.
