The STIHL MS 400 C-M is the world's first Chainsaw to include a magnesium piston. In comparison to it's aluminum piston-equipped counterparts, the advanced magnesium piston in the MS 400 C-M provides greater displacement, power and torque without additional weight. This Petrol Chainsaw is designed for the most demanding tree care and forestry professionals, ideal for felling, delimbing and preparation of wood in medium-density stands. This Petrol Forestry Chainsaw is built with STIHL M-Tronic engine technology to deliver low-emission, fuel-efficient performance even under changing conditions. It also has a long-life HD2 air filter which you simply clean instead of replacing, while a pre-separation system removes large debris before they get into the air filter, increasing run time between cleanings. NOTE: Your Chainsaw will require engine oil and bar lube.

I bought this saw to replace my 362c pro saw. I wish there had been more reviews at the time I picked up the 362. The increased power is noticeable, and it makes a difference. The lighter weight is actually a big deal. At 53 years old, I am just not the man I used to be, and everybody I talk to says the lighter weight is a big deal. This thing pulls like a mule. I have had it buried in big oak and cherry and hickory and it does not struggle like the 362 did. The 25" light bar is a must and it balances quite nicely. I have not taken the 462 out a single time since I bought the 400. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Stihl got this one right.

Best Stihl chainsaw I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned several. I love this saw it is badass! Super power and light weight. Starts better then any saw I’ve ever owned. I hope Stihl makes more saws like this new 400. It is so smooth cutting and has the power to cut huge logs like butter. I can’t saw enough about this saw only that I want more just like it.

I bought this beast back in late June and it’s not disappointed! I’ve ran a 290 Farm Boss for years among others then purchased a 261 (sweet saw) couple years ago. I wanted a saw that would handle a 25” bar with plenty of power but not be a lead sled. Weight to power ratio is amazing! Super fast! I love to hear it idle. Only way I could be more pleased is by using a light bar which is almost impossible to find currently. Buy the 400…Worth every cent!

I picked up the MS 400 a few Months back knowing my Farm Boss was getting a to be a bit small for some big Pines that came down over the Winter. I’m no Spring Chicken and I wanted a Saw that will be with me for the rest of my days. Power and weight were the two main factors and did Stihl ever deliver! Currently running a 25” ES Pro Light bar and a full skip chain. The saw eats through soft wood like nothing and has plenty if pull for hard wood. I absolutely love it! Although, I wish it would've been made available with a full wrap handle (looks Stihl has corrected that now)! The 362 R kit will work, but you’ll lose the fancy clutch cover plate with the self retaining nuts. I ended up buying a 462 clutch cover plate and it works just fine. The 362 R kit will work, but you’ll lose the fancy clutch cover plate with the self retaining nuts. I ended up buying a 462 clutch cover plate and it works just fine. However, it does NOT line up perfectly. It’s just a bit short. So, I’ll probably try and get the replacement clutch cover plate for the new 2023 Full Wrap model (Mine is 2022). If it wasn’t for having to buy 3 Clutch Cover plates, it be a 5 Star saw all day and honestly, that’s probably more mine and my dealers fault! Might send it to RipSaw and really get’r opened up!
For many years I regretted not buying the MS 261 over my MS 230. But when it came down to buying a that Pro Saw, I wanted the quality, but what I really wanted was the power. After watching several videos on YouTube of the MS261, MS 362, MS400, and MS-500i, I felt this saw offered the best value; *Very powerful vs not most powerful or not enough power.*Well-refuned “later” generation M-Tronic vs 1st generation fuel injection* 25” maximum bar capability over 20” and no need for 3ft.The biggest sell for me was how much faster the saw cut for $300 more and how less fast it cut for $500 less—watch the internet videos and be the judge.I purchased mine with both the 20” and 25” LIGHT bars.
Even though I just bought this saw a few days ago. It is Amazing compared to my Stihl 360 magnum that was 22 years old. I use nothing but Stihl blowers, weed trimers and hedgers all my lifetime and never been disappointed . But shocked how far Stihl chainsaws have came into performance and power!! Right now I'm steal babying it around and feeding it nothing but Stihl MotoMix , as I mainly use it for cleaning up left over Hurricane damage ( large timber ) and a few trees to limb. I have watched about 200 u-tube videos and lucky to have 3 Stihl Dealerships less than 15 min from me. That's why I didn't have any problem choosing this MS 400 C-M with all the info I had . But at 12.8 lbs and I chose the 20 inch bar with the yellow tag of course, I love The MS 400 C-M.
I have been running a 251 WoodBoss but needed an upgrade to compliment it with a bigger saw. After a couple trips to the dealer, and watching several video reviews, I debated between the 362, the 400, and 462. Ultimately decided on this 400 with a lightweight 25" bar, and it is perfect for my needs. Plenty of power, but not too much saw for me to handle. Cuts at least 2x faster than the 251, and the longer bar allows me to efficiently cut larger diameters in a single pass. With the lightweight bar, i barely notice the little bit of added weight compared to the 251. After my first 2 tanks of gas, i'm very pleased. (I suspect i would have been please with any of those 3 saws mentioned, but I believe the 400 was probably the perfect balance of power, weight, and price ... MoreI have been running a 251 WoodBoss but needed an upgrade to compliment it with a bigger saw. I saw in a review for the 462 that someone said "with this saw, your wife will call you tiger again". Although i can't offer a head to head comparison, i have no doubt that my new 400 will have a similar effect on her :) Now, if i can just find something equally efficient to help split and stack all the wood i'm going to cut...
The 400 is a midsize saw that cuts big wood. Keep rakers filed, teeth sharp and add longer bucking dogs to compensate for the lack of bar oiling on the 25” bar. Seems if you bury the full bar it will not oil correctly but the longer dogs keep the bar out just enough and use Stihl bar oil. It has good power and torque for a lightweight saw. It has taken the place of a 462 on most jobs. Power, weight and price are right. Buy the saw.
Great power to weight ratio I run a 25 inch bar and it rips through anything I put it through it even when cutting through full bar rounds . Saw is light enough to do a full day of cutting without feeling the fatigue of bigger saws and the price point is right we’re it needed to be for what I was looking for. Eddies equipment is also awesome and very knowledgeable in directing you in the right size equipment for your personal needs
We started with a 16" Stihl chainsaw and still love it, but there are some trees on our property that are just too big for that one to handle. Fast forward, and I was able to use a much larger saw and felt just how much quicker and easier it was able to move through those larger logs. That sold me and I bought this one. We have used it to drop numerous large trees and section them out. I don't think I could be any happier! We definitely have to sharpen the blades quite often, but we're putting this saw through its paces pretty heavily. I will say that the choke on this one is a little wonky and doesn't always want to stay put when trying to start, but I can usually get it with minimal fiddling.
