30 hour action gameplay

This title took me approximately 30 hours to complete on the standard "Action" difficulty. The gameplay and graphics are solid, and made for a fun beat-em-up experience. The story was hard to follow if I'm being honest, but if you are a big FF fan, this game references a lot of past titles. I also really enjoyed the job system, and branching skill trees. Your party members will also have access to certain classes to keep it fresh and customizable. Probably the biggest pain point is inventory management - you are constantly being thrown new gear drops and can only carry 500 at a time. Highly recommend setting auto-dismantle rules in the settings early on, as it gets annoying to clear out items when you're in a mission, or just in general. Overall, this was a fun ... MoreThis title took me approximately 30 hours to complete on the standard "Action" difficulty. Not the graphics but the gameplay. It was not open world, the levels are linear and just have you progress down a path. Worse is the side quests make you do the same thing or just go reverse through the levels. For the record I am playing on a Series X in Resolution Mode. Essentially you keep gaining new "jobs" which allow you a deeper progression of a class. There are almost 20 without doing the exact math and they do offered a slightly varied combat experience. My final take on this after beating the game less then a week after launch is that this may be worth a play through, but wait till it is discounted as this has minimal to zero replayability.

I’m honestly not sure what Square was trying to go for with this game but in my opinion it takes itself way too seriously bordering on being campy. The main character has a one-note personality through the majority of the game and doesn’t really experience much personal growth. In the end you’re left with a protagonist that leaves much to be desired. The story itself is enjoyable if you peel back the layers of bad voice acting and presentation. The graphics and performance aren’t characteristic of what Square is truly capable of. The gameplay tries to mimic the fast pace of Devil May Cry but falls over itself in attempt. The sound design is one of the only good points to this game. There are references sprinkled throughout for fans of the original game to enjoy. If you’re looking for something to play and there’s nothing else on deck you may be considering then pick this up. If you’re a FF fan then expect to curb your expectations and try to enjoy it for what it is rather than what it isn’t.

Amazing
10 April 2022

The gameplay is fantastic, some of the best arpg gameplay out there. It was done by the same people who made the Nioh games and has some slight souls elements to it. The story is also genuinely amazing. It might seem like it's leaving out details but the game expects you to think about it and read the lore you find in levels, mission descriptions, and loading screens. There really isn't anything "unexplained" so long as you pay attention. The soundtrack is great, with a great battle theme and remixes of songs from past final fantasy games. The graphics aren't the best but it didn't bother me, plus they've just recently updated the game and improved lighting in some areas. Performance wise it runs at mostly 60fps on ps5 in performance mode with occasional fps drops ... MoreThe gameplay is fantastic, some of the best arpg gameplay out there. Performance wise it runs at mostly 60fps on ps5 in performance mode with occasional fps drops and one level having a weirdly bad frame rate. I don't understand how they couldn't get this game to a locked 60fps especially with the graphics it has and compared to other games on the ps5, but the fps drops didn't really impact my enjoyment.I really enjoyed this game and so far it's the best game I've played this year. The game is definitely not for everyone, but go in with an open mind.

Fun Spin Off Retelling of FF1 Lore (Opinion Below)
30 December 2022

Good Price! Great Graphics, I recommend playing the Demo or watching review, and get on sale as I did. None Mainstream FFI lore expansion/retelling, the 4 Crystals and Warriors of light. 3rd person, a mix of Souls combat, customizable action fighting, equipanle skillscombat, with FF Classic Job Classes system. Pick/Switch between 2 jobs in combat, Souls gameplay 3 Diffiulties + 1 unlockable, difficulty is just taking more damage enjoyable. Tutorials always available, Funny dialougue when been serious #ChaosMemes. Ease to put down, Online Multiplayer option. Over abundance of item/geardrop tlater used to breakdown for upgrade mats. Enjoyable speed progress for story progression telling and short NPC interaction through short cut scences, skiplable cinematics, not that long either very, which is good to me. Only main character can be used, CANNOT switch to other party memeber, but all learn the same jobs. It would be nice to switch and play other characters.

Great Gameplay, meh story
1 January 2023

The gameplay in this game is really fun. It's an action game: some strategy, some reflex based. The great part is there are a bunch of jobs, and you can choose one depending on what playstyle you prefer. You also unlock jobs throughout the game and it's easy to switch between them. There's a great variety of enemies to fight (with cool bosses) and the levels look very distinct from one another. I feel like the game was just the right amount of challening. The story was honestly meh. It has some cool moments, and the characters are endearing but not really memorable. The gameplay makes up for it.

Not Bad
9 June 2022

It's got good bones. If you like souls-like action combat and Final Fantasy, then it's worth checking out. The best part is the action-oriented, souls-like combat. With the number of jobs and different abilities, the combat stays fresh and fun throughout. Just be prepared to sift through hundreds of equipment options. The story is serviceable, with some decent cutscenes and traditionally obtuse dialogue. Navigating the story is basically just a map with points of interest that you pick and choose to play through. While the game generally looks fairly nice overall, there are many sore spots that probably should have been improved. Overall, a good detour from the traditional mainline Final Fantasy entries and worth checking out.

Not a Masterpiece...Why Can't I Stop Playing It?
8 December 2022

Title says it all. The game is a retelling of the original Final Fantasy's story, with some creative adjustments thrown in. The combat is still RPG-based, but action-driven. Picture Soulsborne. You will get equipment to boost item level average. You will get various jobs you can level up. You will fight bosses with degrees of difficulty that increase through game. And somehow it works. I have been addicted to this game for a while now, and I love finding ways to overcome bosses from an action perspective. The big difference is that Soulsborne games maintain a varying degree of difficulty. SoP is a step down and does make it easier for you in some places.Overall, I recommend it for anyone who wants an action-based Final Fantasy game.

First the Graphics: The cinematics are fine and are done in unreal but in game graphics runs on a PS3/Xbox360 engine, like FF Lightning's revenge or FFXIV engine. It is bad and gives Squarenix a bad name.Pacing: It is the worst game to come out in the past 5 years with the absolute worst pacing of a story. It skips entire sections of a story, for example; in the beginning you have to ask the King for permission to fight the Chaos, then he says no and that you have to prove yourself first by defeating monsters, so your team gladly takes up the offer. All of this is actually text on the screen, then it says it was a hard fought battle and that we should check up on the heroes. Then lets go back to the king and ask to fight chaos again, this time he says okay. We get to start our journey right, we will go walk around, travel, fight monsters and level up before we get to our destination, right? Wrong! We get another cinematic about us making it to the dungeon and entering it, like it was literally across the street from the castle we had left. I installed it after that.Controls: are clunky as expected from a ps3 era combat system.Audio, OST and steelbook are good.

Stranger of Paradise is quite the mixed bag of a video game. It combines elements of several different games, the most notable being Dark Souls and Devil May Cry. The game manages to find a good balance on its difficulty without being too punishingly hard and frustrating. Especially since the main character is such a brute and practically crushes them. The combat and gameplay are fantastic and it actually becomes rather addictive to play.Unfortunately, for as good as the gameplay is is where the praise ends. This games story is....rather bad and thrown together. It fails to explain even the most basic elements of the plot and the motivations of the characters especially Jack, the main character are not exactly clear. All you're told is that Jack really hates Chaos and wants to destroy whatever it is. It really does feel like they just slapped it together without much fun which is sad considering Final Fantasy's always been known for their deep compelling storys and layered characters. The graphics on the cut scenes are rough to say the least with many of them looking like they are Playstation 3 quality. The inventory system is honestly abysmal, with the sheer wealth of loot you end up attaining its almost overwhelming to even start sorting through it all. For all its faults Stranger of Paradise is honestly worth a playthrough just for how great the gameplay and combat are but maybe wait for this one to go on sale.
