Received as an xmas present, excitedly tried it out and fresh out of the box the motor clunked, and then started smoking! Obviously I exchanged it for another one, same brand. (Still had optimism and hope) On the 2nd try the motor blew up and starting billowing out the same grey, electical smoke. Suffice to say, sunbeam is no longer welcome in our house. If I could give this a zero... I would. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS

After purchasing this product I must say I feel its disappointing. My son in law purchased one from Aldi for four times less the price and I just love it. One its clear you can see the fruit as it goes but the main reason I dont like this product at all is there is no timer like the Aldi one so its a miss and hit game of watching the time to see if its ready and Ive ruined fruit in the process. Hate it actually it also is cheap looking and regret purchasing it

We purchased the Sunbeam Food Dehydrator to dehydrate vegetables to take hiking. The dehydrator works even better than I expected - it is remarkable how it reduces the volume and weight of your food. We have also found it really useful as a way to reduce food waste. The dehydrator has three settings, one for flowers/herbs, one for fruit/vegetables, and one for meat. We have not yet tried dehydrating meat, but have dried herbs, fruit and lots of vegetables. Some vegetables it is useful to blanch first, to speed up dehydrating times and make reconstituting easier. The fan is slightly noisy, so it is best to put it in a room where you can close the door. We use our dehydrator with a timing device (for the electricity socket) so we can put it on overnight without having to get up and turn it off. That works really well. The only criticism is that the mesh in the trays has quite large gaps so some smaller pieces of food (for example smaller onion rings or peas) can fall through the gaps when dehydrated. One way around this is to use a layer of baking paper. Overall an excellent purchase and great value for money.

Fan shattered and then the element started to glow red hot
8 August 2022

Not a great experience, had it about 15 minutes.Sliced some bananas to try, after 15 minutes the fan on top started to make a noise and as I approached the noise/vibration increased within a few second the fan broke up and the heater began glowing red hot. I disconnected the plug and returned the unit the next morning

Handy compact size.
14 March 2022

Had the previous model to this and it worked fine for over 5 years and was still working when I gave it to a friend who expressed interest in drying foods. I like this model because of it's compact size compared to some of the other rather large dehydrators that are hard to fit in a normal size cupboard. This model now comes with 3 heat settings of which the first two lower settings didn't really seem to do much and seemed to take way longer than they should to achieve results. I dry pretty much everything on the higher setting with more than satisfactory results. This dehydrator has a lot smaller grate size(same as the older model) which is far better I find for drying those small herbs which would tend to fall through the larger grate size offered on some of the ... MoreHad the previous model to this and it worked fine for over 5 years and was still working when I gave it to a friend who expressed interest in drying foods. Not fly proof
17 October 2021

I bought one of these to replace my old dehydrator and what a terrible disappointment it is…, the gaps in the lid are way to big and if you put it outside the food is ruined because the fly’s just fly straight in and can’t get out. I ruined 5 tray’s of jerky, I have since made up a frame of fly wire to cover the whole machine which was a lot of hassle and extra work…, my last machine (I can’t remember the brand) NEVER had this problem. I definitely don’t recommend this dehydrator if it has to go outside.

Over three decades of use!
26 February 2022

Back in 1991 I bought one of these. We've never had any problems with it in the 31 years since. It's easy to clean too, just scrub the racks. The more expensive shelf ones might have flashy instructions and temps but you don't need these to dehydrate food in the traditional way. Don't use it for meat as we have built a biltong box ourselves (meat really needs to be hung when drying, not laid flat).

Roll up your excess fruit with Sunbeam
30 January 2021

The Sunbeam dehydrator seems to do its job. I am drying apricots and they are taking much longer than expected but they were big halves. Next I want to try roll ups. They will be quicker. The machine is noisy and so you won't want to run it overnight. Sunbeam recommends only daytime dehydrating but my daughter has run it successfully overnight - up until recently, where she burnt the motor out. She said, 'It has had a good workout, though'. Having tried apricot halves and roll ups (on my daughter's machine) I think it is great for roll ups!

The SunbeamDT5600 Food Dehydrator is a excellent product and does what it says it can do. However it is rather noisy, so my advice is to find a nice, safe place to set it up away from areas in your home that are used frequently. Also as usual Appliancesonline we’re fantastic, first product was faulty so they swapped it NOT a problem. Keep up the great work!

terrible dehydrator - dead after two uses
23 February 2020

Given as a gift last Christmas. Used twice and took ages to dry basic herbs. Third time I used it, the motor burnt leaving the house smelling terrible - as if the bushfire smoke wasn't enough! It takes up a lot of space, and is excessively noisy. I was shocked to see how expensive it is and that it broke down after only two uses. I guess well-known brands are not what they used to be. Very disappointing and feel terrible that the person who bought it for me in good faith wasted their money on a terrible product.
