I used this cassette with my old Sram x9 rear D with the B tension screw almost all the way in and a $10 chain guide/ tensioner from amazon. It shifts well enough like this but I am still fine tuning.**You do not have to use a Road link with the 11-40T although you might have better shifting if you do.**, an 11-42T or larger will require a range extender such as the wolftooth road link or goat link.**Here is my new set up** :*RaceFace Ride XC 3x10 crank converted to 1x with Snail 30T chain wheel (15$ ebay)* SunRace MX3 10 speed 11-40 cassette **Go with the MX3, its the lightest one and looks awesome in "champagne"***Sram 1070 10 speed chain (scored on Pinkbike for $30 brand new)*Sram GX 2.1 rear D. I have had a chance to ride with it a few times now. I love the wide-range that it has provided. The one ring where it seems to struggle is the 37 tooth cog but I think that I am getting this dialed in. It might be a problem with my hanger needing adjustment. There was no way that I could have used this without the Goat Link. The derailleur simply did not clear the 42 tooth cog so using this without the Goat Link was not an option. It also spins backwards with no problem and does not even act like the chain wants to fall off like others have mentioned.Overall, a very good purchase. Not as crisp shifting as I used to have with my previous 11-36 cassette (also another SunRace cassette), but it is still very good.

I am now just finished using these cassettes. At first, I was extremely intrugued about the range and cost of the cassette in comparison to alot of the other offerings from praxis or oneup. But, after having bent two in the same place I've had it.The large cogs on the cassettes, even with the correct b tension screw adjusted, kept on bending. I returned the first after only one use and a large bend had occurred, and mec was very accommodating, sending me another cassette stat. But now after riding this cassette for just under half a season and running into the same problem, I've given up on it and spent the money on XT-11spd.Bottom line: The durability of this cassette is just not up to par with me. You may have different experiences than I, but don't say no one ... MoreI am now just finished using these cassettes. Excellent value. Used this cogset for about 700 miles of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. It works very well, with smooth shifting and the 42 is a dream.Changed the front ring to decrease the low end gear ratio from 32 to 30 half way through the ride. That lost the top end ratio, but that was not a big deal since a loaded bike rips down hills very easily anyway. But CAREFUL: The retaining ring is NOT designed properly. The washer, which is usually a tension spring too in other makes, is not there. AND the retaining ring is not serated to mate with the serrations in the 10 cog. Hence the cogset loosens, with each cog becoming wobbly, shifting suffers and clutchs don't work. Field tightening with pliers works, but not for long. I bought this to replace a worn XT cassette and upgrade from a 36t to 40t largest cog. After some minor adjustment it shifted well. I suspect the 42t version might have more difficulty shifting to the largest cog.The cassette is one of the lightest wide range 10 speed options, and relatively inexpensive. You'll want to install a new chain at the same time and will probably need to cut it longer for the larger cog.The one problem I have is that after a few hundred miles, I happened to remove the cassette and saw it had really eaten into the hub splines. Much more than other cassettes and even single speed setups had. The hub is still usable, but I expect a thousand miles with this cassette would require a hub replacement.
Previously ran 1x10 XT 11-36 10 speed cassette/ SRAMX9T2RD/KMC X10SLchain/Blackspire 28Tnarrow-wide/GripShiftXO on 29er hardtail x 2years with complete satisfaction. Was curious about these relatively untested Sunrace cassettes and the lure of a lower gear, so bought this cassette expecting some degraded shifting performance vs Shimano/SRAM. Degradation was way worse than expected, and slow, clanky, clunky, shifting all across the range. The added low gear was a bonus, but this did not nearly offset the complete loss of confidence in shifting. Note this is on a lightweight 1x10 race hardtail where shifting performance may be more of a priority than on other rigs, and I am largely a finesse rider and shifter. Was going to go back to my previous setup after just 1 week of use, but ended up in Moab, where after another week of hard use I had a mysteriously catastrophic downshift and a fatal implosion of RD/RDhanger. It makes me question these Sunrace cassettes, as well as the sense in using big cogs on RDs that are ultimately not designed for it.In hindsight, I wish I had tried the extender cog route instead. My original XT cassette still had plenty of life in it, so there was no savings for me there. As well, I think the Shimano shifting quality would have been largely preserved. I appreciate MEC bringing in and stocking this rather unique component, but it was a complete disappointment and I have since returned this item to MEC.
The experts at Ottawa’s Scooteretti bike shop are real pros, very good advisors on e-bikes and a excellent technical repair team.I love my Moustache Dimanche 29,3 ebike: smooth, quiet, powerful, rsponsive and long battery range.Jacques Sauvé
I really wanted a 1x11 drivetrain on my 2016 Trek Fuel Ex8 so I swapped my 2 front chainrings + front derailleur + shifter for an oval 30T chainring and a new chain. However it was missing some gear range on the low end so I picked this rear cassette which gave me back the low end but sacrificed a little on the top end (compared to the original 2x11 setup). Note that I did use the wolf tooth goatlink as it was only $20 or so and wanted to ensure the shifting was snappy but who knows.. maybe could have done without the goatlink. There seems to be cheaper alternatives to the goatlink available now but all in all I'm very happy with this setup. Gear range is 90% of what I had before, the weight is cut down by about 35 or 40%, and there's less cabling & components to ... MoreI really wanted a 1x11 drivetrain on my 2016 Trek Fuel Ex8 so I swapped my 2 front chainrings + front derailleur + shifter for an oval 30T chainring and a new chain. Those who gave this cassette a low rating caused the problems thay had themselves. They either ignored Shimano's compatibility recommendations or don't know about them. All Shimano short cage derailleurs are limited to a 28T cog max. SS RDRS from Shimano won't work properly over this cassette's range. 9 speed RDRs also won't work because the spacing on a 9 speed cassette is different.Using a 9 speed RDR the shifting will degrade with each shift up the cassette stack. You might be able to get marginal shifting up or down the cassette but not both ways. Shifting will not be reliable or consistent under riding loads. The longer b tension screw is a hack that forces the derailleur to do something it is not designed to do. it will destroy the derailleur quickly hence ... MoreThose who gave this cassette a low rating caused the problems thay had themselves. It is not a flaw in this cassette. The broken 42T cog is unusual. Something else was going on to cause a failure like that. Its likely shimano and sunrace are connected some how. sunrace may be a vendor or subsiduary of shimano but I don't know for sure.
Converted my MTB rig from 2x10 to a 1x10 thanks to the wide range that this cassette uses. Upon first installation, I ran into the same problem as some reviewers: the B screw wasn't long enough, so I put on a super long screw to"solve the problem. At this point, it was work OK, but the angle at which the B-screw was contacting the hanger made it bend within 2 rides. The perfect solution is to get a derailleur hanger extension (goat link); hopefully MEC will stock this piece as it is essential to lasting proper shifting capabilities of a cassette that has such a wide range. Since this add-on, shifting has been spot-on for 12 rides without the need for adjustment.Hope this helps!
