We needed to expand the capacity of our ethernet connections, because the standard ISP-supplied modem didn't contain enough ports. I purchased the Netgear switch after speaking to a co-worker and found this model to try. The instructions were very easy to follow...basically connect your modem OUT cable to any one of the switch ports, and connect another cable from one of the remaining switch ports to your WiFi router. Now you've got extra ports to use for things like powered cameras, FEMTO cells, security system modems (like ADT's Pulse, or other home automation devices). The Netgear chasis is metal with a very small form factor, so it doesn't take up much space and seems very durable. Can't beat the cheap price either!

I've purchased 2 of these in the last few weeks. One for work and one for home. Both worked perfectly right out of the box! Just plug in the line from the router and then plug in any devices that need to be connected to the internet or your network. We had run out of ports on our 16 plug switch at work and needed additional ports for a reasonable price. Buying a 24 or 36 plug switch would have been well over $200 whereas the 4 plug switch was only $24.99. Our 16 plug switch still works just fine, we just needed a couple extra plugs. I had somewhat the same issue at home to hook up both a ethernet cable for netflix and the Swing adaptor for DISH Network to make

My main complaint regards the Mail-in Rebate. Netgear engages in the sinister practice of baiting consumers with mail in rebate offer ($10-50%) and then making it difficult and time consuming to redeem your rebate. For one thing, why mail in? Snail mail Really that's what a top vendor of tech hardware chooses? The rebate form doesn't come in the packaging, of course. You must know enough to return to the online vendor and find a link to the form. This link is obscure and not in the proximity of the rebate offer and displayed as a few words of 7pt text. 1. Fill in the form EXACTLY. I'm sure they deny many forms for minor errors. 2. You may only claim one rebate per submission. 3. Request must be postmarked to within 30 days of expiration of offer. 4. It is very clear that Netgear's marketing/sales strategy counts on a % of consumers to NEVER redeem their rebates. In fact, ConsumerAffairs.com states that over $500 million in rebates go unclaimed every year. Good luck getting your mail-in rebates.

Made a mistake and ordered the 10/100 version and not the latest version of the same switch which is gigabit. Not a big deal for internet, but huge mistake for me as I need gigabit for large file transfer and video streaming from my NAS! I will order the switches I should have ordered. having said this, the switch is a solid device that works well, keeps cool and takes up little space. Excellent choice for people that don't need gigabit and need to expand their LAN...
What a perfect way to connect 2 computers( can connect up to 4) to one Ethernet connection. I have had my Windows XP computer (HP Media Center) for over 10 years and have now switched to a Windows 8.1 computer(HP 500-297c) and needed a way to utilize both computers because of my collection of everything under the sun on my HP Media Center computer. I went to Staples and the very friendly clerk told me that all I neded was a couple of Ethernet cables and this NETGEAR ProSAFE 5-Port Fast Ethernet Desktop Switch FS105 by Netgear. Went home, connected everything (plugged in each cable to each computer and main Ethernet cable to box, then other end of Ethernet cable to box, and WAH LAH! I have Internet on either computer and can run them both at the same time. Thank you ... MoreWhat a perfect way to connect 2 computers( can connect up to 4) to one Ethernet connection. It works great and it's built well. I just plugged in the cables and it's ready to go. No setup to do.So, how do you extend your network range that is farther away than your wireless signal can go? You use cat 5 cable and a switch in between to go longer than the supposed limit of 300 meters. At least that was my choice since I had conduit and ran the cable up to my house from my guesthouse with the switch connected in between them. None of the sales reps knew to use a switch to extend beyond the limit until I talked with a network specialist at Staples. I had gone to several other stores and they had no idea. Wireless would have been the preferred way, but that would be a lot more expensive and I already had conduit buried and cat 5 wire.
My NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS305), took a couple of minutes to setup and helped me to extend my router past it's physical limitations, by allowing me to be able to plug in up to 4 additional devices that use Ethernet cables. Your router continues to manage everything, so there was basically nothing i had to do. 1 minor issue: the box itself says nothing about a wall mounting kit being enclosed, but the instructions included does! Can't beat the price and i highly recommend it's purchase.
Take notice that the power cord and Ethernet ports are on opposite sides. The status lights are all on the Ethernet ports themselves. For some applications this type of a setup is an advantage and for others it is a disadvantage. So you may want to get the type that will fit best for your setup. If you are planning to use this, or any other switch, to connect to a modem to distribute Internet connections, I would recommend using a firewall instead to connect to the modem. With all the personal information that is stored on computers, transferred online, and the ever growing list of Internet connected smart devices, it's really to your benefit to have the layer of security that a firewall provides. For the the price I paid, absolutely fantastic! The firmware should definitely be upgraded right away if using an old version. It's great that netgear still support this switch. I mainly bought it to support a 802.1q trunk link on the other side of a powerline adapter. I wanted it to support gigabit and be a small form factor
I have a standard wireless router that accepts 4 ethernet cables which were all being used. I needed two additional ports. I simply connected an ethernet cable between the Netgear ProSafe 5-Port Ethernet switch and the router. The rest of my cables to the switch. The router recognized the switch and other component connected to it, now every thing works perfectly. I like the Netgear Switch because it is small, has a metal housing and is low priced. By using the Netgear ProSAFE 5-Port Ethernet switch I was able to increase the number of ethernet ports available to me from 4 to 7. Since this is an unmanaged switch it requires no setup or software to be installed..
