Pros: Lots of storage capacity built into a very small form factor.Cons: Vibrations! At this price point I would really expect Synology to come up with a solution to the vibration issues. People have been fixing the issue with velcro and I personally used some foam tape. I am sure with the price of these things Synology could come up with a much more elegant solution especially after all this time it was first reported back in the 2000's.

I pondered long and hard before pulling the trigger on this unit. I previously used the DS1819+, and it is a good machine. I can recommend it. But, I needed the additional bays. I knew going in about the "unsupported hard drives" issue. I can say that the system functions, let's you add new "unsupported" drives, replace with them, etc. And you can still see drive health info (though it takes an extra click). Like everyone else, I want this restored. But, I can live with it until it is. I hear it is being improved in the next release (currently in beta), which is ultimately what made me decide to go ahead and make the purchase. Aside from that matter, it's an excellent machine. Performs great.

I've installed 30 or so Synologys over the years. I used to love them, but since they've made the change to push vendor lock-in with the drives, and then mark their rebranded drives up by 50%, I think I'm going to start looking somewhere else for a NAS. There are a lot of good options out there, and Synology arbitrarily forcing you to use their drives just signals greed and a lack of respect for their customers. So vote with your wallet, and go somewhere else.

- I bought the DS2422+ because Synology supports a migration procedure from an older Synology NAS. You can take your HDDs out of your older Synology NAS and place them in this unit. This is a great feature, but things went down hill from there. - After putting my HDDs in the DS2422+, the NAS did boot up but I saw these issues: * HDD status shows 'unverified' * When creating a storage pool with the migrated HDDs, you get warnings * Storage pools with any unverified HDD would show a danger status and you get warning alerts/emails. * The DSM software no longer shows drive bad sector count, temp, etc. for my unverified drives - Synology has adopted a highly restrictive new support policy for HDDs - My HDDs that were once supported in another Synology NAS are no longer ... More- I bought the DS2422+ because Synology supports a migration procedure from an older Synology NAS. I have lost functionality. - As of this writing, there are 11 Synology drives and 1 Western Digital drive listed as compatible from the Synology website. The hundreds (thousands) of other NAS drives on the market are unverified or unsupported. - I contacted Synology support to understand why my HDDs are now unverified and they said one reason is because the NAS cannot update the firmware on the HDDs. Personally, I don't want my NAS to dig into my HDD. - Beyond this issue, DS Photo is no longer available on the unit. You have to use Synology Photos. Connecting your smartphone in your own home using your own LAN to the DS2422+ should be easy. I haven't gotten it to work (DS Photo would connect just fine). Synology encourages you to use their QuickConnect technology which may route your photos from your mobile to Synology servers back to your NAS to be stored. No thank you. - Synology does not offer hardware repair service for your NAS outside of the 3 year US warranty. This means if you have a NAS motherboard failure outside 3 years, your NAS is dead.
The following is my experience upgrading my 2019, 8-bay Synology NAS with Seagate EXOS drives to this new 12-bay unit.Starting with the 2021 models, Synology has been aggressively marketing their Synology branded, Toshiba-made HDD drives. The language on their site says that this NAS works best with Synology drives but is vague on exactly what exactly that means. The HDD compatibility list for this unit shows only a small range of Synology branded drives. No Seagate, no WD, and not even Toshiba who make Synology drives.Confused, I reached out to both Synology and B&H customer service (see their Q&A answers here) who told me that while Synology recommends their own drives for best performance, my existing drives were supported and would work. That was good enough for me, so I purchased the unit and it arrived the next day. After a quick migration, I learned that my definition of work and support are much different than Synology's.As soon as I powered on the unit, I noticed that my System Health was displaying as CRITICAL in a bright red alert. My NAS sent me an email saying the same. The reason? Your volume is using unverified drives, please replace with verified drives immediately. The list of verified drives? They're all Synology. Then I went to the Storage Manager to see if there's anything I can do to return my System Health to Healthy. This is when I discovered that Storage Manager is now bricked if you're not using verified drives. No drive alerts, S.M.A.R.T., bad sector, temperature, serial number-nothing. You will find out you've lost a drive only when you lose the drive. In a RAID array, finding out that you have a bad drive after it's too late is not working or supported.Personally, I feel that Synology has lost the plot if they are going to lock their NAS units to their own drives but that's their bed to lie in and I assume they'll do a quick about-face if the market agrees with me. However, if this is their new policy they need to own it and be straight with what they tell their customers and distributors.NON-SYNOLOGY DRIVES ARE NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS UNIT: FULL STOP.If you sell me a car and say that it works with all gasoline but the engine sensor stops working and every light on the dashboard turns on if I fill it with anything other than high octane fuel, that car only works with high-octane fuel-even if I'm still able to drive it on the highway.(As always, B&H was great with both the original shipment and the return. This review should only reflect on Synology and the DS2422+.)
Firstly, some background, I own some DS918 NAS units and although they worked fine, I was unable to upgrade them easily. Specifically, I had 2 units each with 4 12TB Toshiba N300 drives in raid 6. I couldn’t expand the raid pools without changing all the drives. Also, I was limited to 1Gbe network speeds. Synology emailed me promoting their new DS2422+ NAS and I decided to go for it.I also purchased the Synology E10G18-T1 Single Port 10GBASE-T/NBASE-T Network Card and fitted that before starting the upgrade.Moving the 2 raid pools from the DS918+ units was easy, and I later expanded both pools to produce 2 raid 6 pools of 5 disks each. Also to facilitate some speed tests I added 2 old 2TB HGST Deskstar NAS drives as raid 1.Was mainly interested in write tests ... MoreFirstly, some background, I own some DS918 NAS units and although they worked fine, I was unable to upgrade them easily. Also to facilitate some speed tests I added 2 old 2TB HGST Deskstar NAS drives as raid 1.Was mainly interested in write tests so the results are as follows.Pool1 & 2 5x12TB Hitachi raid 6, pool 3 2x4TB HGST.Using a 25GB file, I did 2 tests. The first test writing one copy from 3 windows client machines at each pool simultaneously, maxed out the 10Gbe link.Pool1 370 MB/sec from a win 10 i9-10920X 10Gbe nic.Pool2 330 MB/sec from a win 10 i5-8600K 5Gbe nic.Pool3 200 Mb/sec from a win 7 Core i7-5820K 2.5 Gbe nic.The second test was from all 3 machines to pool1.In above machine order, 120, 120, 130 MB/secI did one read test to the I9 machine and received 320 MB/sec from pool1.From what I’ve seen, performance wise, I like this NAS.Now the bad news.I’m using DSM 7.0.1-42218 on the DS2422+ and the DS918+ NASs.The DS2422+ is configured to discriminate against drives that are not on the compatibility list.Apart from Synology drives there is only A 4TB WD Ultrastar DC HC310on this list.Every pool, volume and drive are shown as “Critical”, and the health overview just says “Unverified” … replace the drive. Please bear in mind, that all the Toshiba drives were working perfectly well in the DS918+ NASs and did not show as critical with DSM 7.0.1-42218.I hope that Synology revisit their compatibility policy.
Requiring your own brand for storage units is exploitative, anti-competitive, and just plain greedy. Not to mention the e-waste this sort of practice creates. Avoid this solution at all cost. I had an older Synology and was looking to upgrade to this, but I will be changing to QNAP or similar after returning this worthless piece of garbage. Ironwolf drives (the gold standard) don't even work and are likely better drives than the white-labeled Toshiba they are peddling.
OMG I am loving it. I had a Seagate six Bay Nas. It was like having a Tonka toy compared to. This is a real car. It will take a little getting used to, but the storage is amazing. You will never have enough data to fill all 12 bays. I just installed 32MB of memory you get what you pay for. It's a monster with plenty of applications and room to expand and all the applications you can run. Thanks YouTube for giving me a heads up on this unit Way to go. Seagate dropped the ball and left everybody hanging with their Nas no support no applications. Thank you Synology. And if you don't buy it from B&H good luck getting one that's legit when I ordered the memory I received it the next day. I think that tells you something. Love you B&H. PS I will be back for the 20 TB hard ... MoreOMG I am loving it. I had a Seagate six Bay Nas. It was like having a Tonka toy compared to. This is a real car. Installed 5 new WD Red Pro 18TB drives. Drives were recognized and a volume was created, but System Health was displaying as CRITICAL in a bright red alert. Displays critical message: Your volume is using unverified drives, please replace with verified drives immediately. These are Enterprise grade NAS drives! I went to the Storage Manager to see if there's anything I can do to return my System Health to Healthy. Storage Manager is now disabled if you're not using verified drives. No drive alerts, S.M.A.R.T., bad sector, temperature, serial number, etc. Synology needs to address this ASAP. They want people to buy only their drives.
My 5-year old DS2415+ bit it when my power flickered so i had to upgrade to a new DS2422+. I obviously wanted to re-use all my existing drives so i migrated them over. It was a painless task, basically just put the old drives in the new unit (didn't even have to swap trays) and turned it on. Once i found it on the network the DSM setup was just as easy, all my old configurations came back. The problem is that these new Synology NASs only work optimally with Synology branded drives. All my WD Reds and Seagate Ironwolf drives show up as unvalidated and my volume is constantly in critical condition. I was otld by Synology that in a future update this will be fixed, and all the drive H.E.A.L.T.H. info will come back for regular drives.
