Great little kit that was better than I expected. It does benefit from a few upgrades, like proper bearings and a bigger motor. But if like me you've built Tamiya RC kits before, you'll probably have a spare silver can 540 motor you can use.

Having purchased one, long ago, when they were first introduced, I'm so very happy to have bought a new one. Building it with the nephew brought back many happy memories and provided a few 'teaching moments'. The yellow wheels and white coil springs contrast against the black body nicely and the included electronic speed control works great. The lil old 380 motor even seems faster than I remember them being. There has been at least one improvement over the original... only the Hornets used to come with the small 'pin' between the axles. I liked it enough that I had to buy another one for myself and have been having a ball racing around with him. A fabulous first 'real' RC car for any age group. The car is great and we had great father son time building it. But it should have the full kit when sold as its simply a model and a nod not an RC car when sold without the handset, receiver, and servo for steering. Especially when those extra items cost as much as the car!
Ive wanted one of these since I was a kid, great price for some nostalgia. Packaging was excellent and the reputation of the product isnt just hype.
There are a lot of more fancier, faster, durable and sophisticated yet cheaper RC cars out there. However none of those delivers the pure enjoyment of building an RC car. I enjoyed building this Tamiya when I was 10 years old... and I enjoyed building the same car with my kids now I'm 40 years old.
This was my first rc car in the '80's. I had it thru my teenage years until it got ran over by a car. I was devastated. I saw these had come back some years ago and said I needed to get another. What a great childhood memory relived. Thank you Tamiya for bringing these back.
No independent rear suspension or oil damping so a crazy fun car but not for racing. Replace all gearbox and wheel bushings with bearings and a 540 engine but youll need an 18t pinion gear. A total of around $40. The thing goes wild
For any collector or new to the RC world, this kitt is a must have. Perfect for a beginner, such a simple build, easy to assemble and a great looking buggy. Tough for a 2wd and easy upgradable to tamiya hop up parts available. If you love the look of this then get it. Put in a 540 motor 3600mah batt in, and this thing moves. awesome fun to run in the back yard or on the beach. Recommend this kitt to anyone.
there is a reason tamiya is still producing the original grasshopper/hornet series, despite many "improved" versions that have come and gone over the years. there is just something very endearing about such a crude, simple design that not only brings back nostalgia for the early 1980s, but it also forces you the user to use your imagination to improve its "handling" (what there is of it). they remind me of the 1950s hot rods, you stick a big motor in a simple, light frame. then hold on for the ride!
