Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (B070) Sony E
OverviewSpanning a versatile zoom range and characterized by its bright design, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a 25.5-105mm-equivalent lens for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The wide to short-tele range is ideal for everyday shooting and the fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Complementing this design is a series of specialized optics, including aspherical and low dispersion elements, that produce well-corrected imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.Adding to the versatility of the zoom design is a Vibration Compensation image stabilization system, which reduces the appearance of camera shake for steadier photo and video recording in low-light conditions. Also benefitting handling, an RXD stepping motor enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging. This lens is awesome. For many shooters and videographers this could be a one and done lens. There are some things to be aware of. First of all it is a big lens. I would recommend getting a small cage or L-bracket like the UURig R006 to have a better grip on the small bodies of the A6XXX series when using this lens. I would not consider this a travel lens because of it's size, but your mileage may vary. I would choose the excellent Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 lens over this for a travel. Also there is no switch to turn off Tamron's version of OSS, so you need to do it in camera when taking long exposures on a tripod. If you don't they will come out blurry with this lens. Also for me, this is not a substitute for the Sigma trio of F1.4 lenses, with the exception of the ... MoreThis lens is awesome. For many shooters and videographers this could be a one and done lens. The Sigma 56mm in particular has that magical look to it and is sharp wide open. Bokeh on the Tamron 17-70mm is good not great, but certainly an improvement over the popular full frame Tamron 28-75mm. Sharpness is excellent across the board, but as many reviews have said you need to stop it down to F4 at the long end if you're pixel peeping or making large print. For social media posting or small prints you won't notice it shooting wide open on the long end of the zoom range. If you want a fast all purpose lens for your Sony A6XXX camera and don't mind the size, this is the one you've been waiting for.

It's a big lens, and it does look a little out of place on an aps-c body, but boy does it perform. Exceptionally sharp even wide open from 17 through about 50mm. Longer focal lengths do soften out a bit, but stopping down to F4 brings it back. The VC works great and I haven't noticed any issues, though most of my shooting has been on tripod. Plus the minimum focus length at the wide end is ridiculously close, you can get some really unique shots, though edge of frame will get soft with very close subjects. For video users, there is almost no focus breathing throughout the range and focus pulls look incredible. VC of course makes hand held shots very smooth. And the controls on the lens are very smooth and do allow you to rather cleanly zoom in and out.Only ... Should be plenty robust enough though!)If you could only have one lens, buy this. Now. If you use your aps-c for video primarily, buy this now. If you travel or you are ok using primes, then this lens is probably not for you.Highly recommended.

Ive been using three prime lenses with my a6400 for as long as Ive had it. While I love those lenses, it is kind of a pain to have to swap lenses or carry a second body around when I'm just out shooting. This lens covers all that ground and then some, and maintains the 2.8 aperture. It's super light and I'm very happy with the sharpness in the images I've made so far. Really looking forward to playing with it more and more.

This is the bread and butter focal length for APS-C. And getting a constant f2.8 is really useful. With APS-C sensors you want to keep the ISO low, so speed helps. Furthermore it's harder to get subject isolation with APS-C so speed is key.Focus works as well as any native lens (which is excellent). The lens is sharp throughout, produces good colour and contrast. It close focuses and has OSS - great for a6000, a6100, a6300 and a6400 cameras without sensor shift. It's bigger than its peers is the only negative thing I can say - but this is to be expected as it's either substantially faster (than the 16-70, 18-135) or has OSS (vs. 16-55).I found the image quality to be better than the the Sony 16-70 (though I still like that lens) and quite a bit better than the ... It's a tad behind Sony's most excellent 16-55 (which is a true stunner at every f-stop and focal length). Put another way the Tamron is close to the Sigma trio (giving up f1.4 for zoom convenience and OSS). It's a good compromise at a good price. Highly recommended. Now get out there and shoot!
I'll start this by saying I am much more of a prime person than someone who uses zoom lenses in general, and honestly I only bought this lens because I felt like I wanted to have one decent zoom lens for certain situations where I might need one, but I don't see myself using this lens all that much as opposed to the primes that I have. I think it's a really good lens, the reach is good, the 2.8 is good, but I think the auto focus is suspect. I have major problems with it, especially wide open, the lighting has to be perfect, otherwise it hunts all over the place, it is not reliable at all, but then again, I use manual focus most of the time as well. Overall, it's sharp, it's good, but as far as the auto focus, which I think is one of the most important things, it's ... Overall, it's sharp, it's good, but as far as the auto focus, which I think is one of the most important things, it's completely unreliable. And I don't think that the stabilization really makes that much of a difference, in retrospect, I think I would have been better off buying something like the Sigma 18 to 50 F2.8, because even though it doesn't have stabilization, the size is much more appealing, and it is probably just as good in all other ways. I'd say this lens is certainly good, kinda heavy/big, especially with the a6400, and I remain a prime shooter most of the time. :-)
First off I love the images this lens can capture, but it has a design flaw. It allows dust in when zooming in and out. This is the second lens and the same problem. After using my lens 1 time out west I got dust inside the lens. Tamron replaced the lens for me, but 6 months later after using the lens in the Smokies 1 time I had the same problem with the replacement lens. When I messaged Tamron about this problem they replied " By zooming in and out creates a vacuum like suction that can trap dust under the front element."....... What!?...... How am I supposed to use this lens then?.....Needless to say I'm sending my lens back to Tamron.. again to get it cleaned or replaced.. This is not what I expected when I purchased this lens. So this definitely isn't user error. But needless to say I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LENS.
I purchased this lens as a possible replacement for my Fujifilm 16-55mm f2.8. I really love the Fujifilm lens, but I thought, given the Tamron's slight weight difference and the addition of stabilization could make it a worthy replacement for the Fujifilm. I compared the two lenses using two X-T3 cameras side by side to easily and instantly make a handling comparison. Surprisingly there was only a marginal difference. The extra weight and diameter of the Fuji was offset by the length of the Tamron so hold each one with one hand at shoulder height, was virtually the same. As far as the other physical characteristics, the Fujifilm build quality, aperture ring and overall since of confidence made it a pretty clear winner. As far as the other physical characteristics, the Fujifilm build quality, aperture ring and overall since of confidence made it a pretty clear winner. The Tamron is totally fine but just not a the same quality level and things like the visible casting seams and the constant slight buzz/hum of the electronics just didn't give the same measure of confidence. As far as image quality, to summarize, the Fujifilm has very slightly better contrast and rendering, while the sharpness of the two lenses was not identical at equivalent focal lengths and apertures, but they both do a very good job of capturing beautiful images.Since I already own and am quite happy with the tried and true 16-55, the conclusion for me was to keep that lens and return the Tamron. That being said, given my experience with the two lenses, if I didn't have either and intended to purchase one or the other new, the considerably cheaper Tamron would be very tempting.
This review will center on why this lens is useful for solving the unique challenges relating to hikes with other people on trails between 3 and 10 miles/hike. (For hiking I usually use my Sony A6600--not my heavier full frame Sony). The best crop sensor lens for hikes lens will satisfy the following:1. Weight and size. If the lens is too heavy you will not want to hike with it. If too big, ditto.2. Good enough overall optical quality. This lens few relevant optical weaknesses for hiking--sharpness and other properties are amazing. Obviously, one obvious limiting factor might be the maximum f/2.8 lens opening--especially early or late in the day, under a heavy tree canopy, or in the rain. In those cases Just pump up ISO to 6400 and get the shots.3. Quick ... In those cases Just pump up ISO to 6400 and get the shots.3. Quick access to different focal lengths. No one wants to carry multiple lenses for a fun time on the hiking trail. And yet, from instant to instant you will need portraits of your fellow hikers, then the distant deer, then the turtles up VERY close, etc. Zooms like this one that have a high magnification factor rule here! The other limiting factor might be the max 70mm focal length. However, this lens is optically so strong that I can shoot at 70mm (use f/5.6 or 8), and then crop extensively in post--and still get an excellent image.4. Moisture resistance. Your lens will get sweaty after a hot hike. I uncarefully wipe this moisture resistant lens with lots of filtered water and then dry the lens off!
The 17-70 exceeded my expectations.I am using it on a Sony FX30. Sony's legendary autofocus works perfectly and silently. The FX30 has digital Clear Zoom which leverages it's 6K sensor, and that adds reach to the long end exceeding anything I need on an everyday basis. The lens is big-ish, but not heavy. It feels very solid and well crafted. The zoom action feels smooth and consistent.I look forward to pairing this with the Tamron 11-20 f2.8.
I bought it in an auction. The price was really cheap (around half the price). Because I live in Mexico taxes was very hi but even with that the price was really good (75% of a new one). At the beginning I was suspicious about the process (in part because the price) but at the end everything was ok. As soon I receive it I prove it in my A6000 the first impressions was really good, any apparent damage, scratch or something, diaphragm works good and focus system too. If you are considering it, buy it. I guess is the best cost - benefit option you can buy. I only noticed something, because is an optical stabilized lens, the energy consumption is higher even more than the kit lens that is O. S. too (but smaller).
