This second gen 28-75 is absolutely beautiful. The new design feels better in my hands and looks better also. The programmable button is a nice touch for sure! Great for focus locking! The lens is way more compact and lighter than the previous version, which is perfect. With that the lens from 28-50 almost feels like it has internal zoom. You don't notice the lens extend till a little passed that. Overall pics are sharp, quiet motor, lightning fast auto focus. My new overall go to lens for sure!

I haven't been annoyed at all with the reversed focus and zoom rings and connecting to the app on my computer has been super easy and I've been toying around with settings on it, changing what the button controls and different settings for the ring.I'm not putting it at 4 stars due to my own misplaced expectations, I'm putting it at 4 due to the fact that it's definitely got some things I think could be better, mostly with autofocus in less than ideal lighting, but for the price, you absolutely cannot get better. This lens ties all of my Sigma prime lenses in sharpness and keeps up or beats them with the autofocus in well light situations.

If you are looking at performance charts and stuffs. This is not a perfect lens however at $700, you can beat this lens. For most walk around situation, this lens is very sharp. Crowded places like Las Vegas Bellagio, this len is really shine. I know people complain about it does not reach further however there would be compromises for anything. In the perfect world, would you want a 16-200 lens? However there are no practical reasons for such lens and it would massive.If you want a walk around lens, go for it.

I did notice when I first put it on that there was quite a bit of resistance trying to lock the bayonet, which I assume was due to the weather sealing gasket. It loosened up a bit after several mounting cycles.Sharpness:Center sharpness is excellent right from f/2.8 at all focal lengths, nothing to worry about there. As for the corners, I can tell it was optimized for performance at the wide end at the expense of the long end.At 20mm, the corners are very good right from f/2.8, and by f/5.6 they are excellent, almost as good as the center. At 20mm I have no reservations about using it at any aperture anywhere in the frame.However, at 40mm and f/2.8 the corners are well... not good (which is why I see why they didn't push it to 50mm). I was going to say they are straight up bad, but I suspect there is some issue with field curvature when focused at or near infinity in the center. They improved a bit if I focused in the corners, though still not great. It takes until about f/8 for the corners to get to what I would call very good.Flare:Flare resistance is pretty good. It's there if the sun is in the frame, but it's generally pretty low contrast, so you're often not going to even notice it unless it's on top of a very dark background. Below f/5.6 it's almost invisible, and gradually gets more prominent the more you step down.Aberrations:There is some chromatic aberration and distortion, but that's very easily fixed in post (especially with Lightroom profiles) so nothing to worry about. There is a fair bit of vignetting, even stopped down, but that's about par for the course for fast, wide, full frame zooms. If you want to try to use it for astrophotography, the coma seems pretty low, definitely above average performance there.Starbursts (a.k.a. sunstars):In an age where it seem every lens gets rounded aperture blades (seriously, who cares about round bokeh at wide angles?) that create blurry, messy starbursts, I was pleasantly surprised with this lens. Since switching from Pentax APS-C a long time ago, I've longed for a lens that could produce starbursts as easily as the legendary SMC DA 15mm Limited (not the later HD version that added rounded blades). This lens doesn't quite reach the heights of that monster, but definitely well above most other lenses. You already get decent ones at f/8, and they get really prominent at f/11. By f/16 diffraction starts to diverge the points, so f/11 is the peak IMO.Conclusion:Given the full frame range of moderate ultra-wide to normal, the f/2.8 constant aperture, the very compact size and weight, and the fantastic image quality at 20mm, all for just $700, this a highly recommended lens. However, the problematic corners at 40mm really aren't something that can be just ignored, so I can't give it a perfect score. I'd give it a 4.5/5 if I could.

Autofocus and lens sharpness are every bit as good as the Sony. The Tamron is a great walking around lens and combine it with the 17-28 and you have an incredible, light duo for street, architecture, and landscapes. If you are a hybrid shooter, this is a great lens for video too with and combined with something like the A7C/SIII/A7IV, focus pulls work well and look beautiful. If you are a hybrid shooter, this is a great lens for video too with and combined with something like the A7C/SIII/A7IV, focus pulls work well and look beautiful. The lens is very sharp and the colors look great.I really only have two things that I wish for on this lens which is why it is four instead of 5 stars. First, lens flare is still a little much on all three f2.8 Tamron lenses (17-28, 28-75 g2, 70-180). It can look artistic at times, and some people like it. But I really hate that I can't control it better. Second, I would like a couple more controls on the lens. Maybe an AF/MF switch and I would love a 3 position custom switch like on the Tamron 35-150.
I really like this lens for its small size, very useful focal range and being f/2.8The lens is very good optically, except for corner softness at the wide end, which mostly goes away by f/5.6. The focusing is fast and precise. The rings are butter smooth, which can be rotated with a little finger and the lens extends just 10mm or so. In that regard I didn't like the new Sony 20-70/4, because the zoom ring feels stiff, like plastic rubbing plastic with some stickiness at the wide end, and that lens also extending a lot. The tactile experience with Tamron is great.This lens despite such wide angle has pretty low distortions, you don't even need a software profile for it. If you are shooting at 16:9 aspect ratio, those dark corners will be mostly cut off.Being f/2.8 means I can use this lens indoors in many situations and due to its size/weigh it can travel with me anywhere. If you like 20-40mm range this is a great lens to have.I also tested this lens on Megadap adapter on Nikon Z6ii. The bad part is that the mounting is very stiff, which is common for Tamron lenses. The good part, the lens works perfectly, and focusing is very quick and precise.
