Tamron 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 Lens For Sony E-Mount
Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however is also suitable for use with APS-C models where it provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length. Modestly bright f/2.8 maximum aperture strikes a balance between being suitable for working in available lighting conditions and realizing an impressively compact and lightweight profile. One LD (Low Dispersion) element reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to produce increased clarity and color fidelity. One molded glass aspherical element suppresses distortion and spherical aberrations for greater sharpness and more accurate rendering. BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. Ideal for close-up shooting, this lens offers a half life-size 1:2 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 5.9" to suit working at near distances. OSD stepping motor offers especially quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens` use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing. Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

This is a good little lens, but I must add: for the money. The Tamron Di III 24mm lens is lightweight, versatile, reasonably sharp and inexpensive. There appears to be a rubber or silicone gasket on the lens mount for weather resistance. It is also macro capable to 1:2. For folks on a budget, I expect these little lenses to be a valuable asset.Barrel distortion and vignetting is pronounced and is on a par with, and perhaps a little worse than, that on the Sony FE 28mm F2. In fact, when the Sony Fe 28mm lens profile is selected in LR CC Classic for lens adjustment (a profile for the Sony e-mount Tamron 20mm, 24, and 35mm is not yet available), one obtains a pretty decent correction. The lens is sharp enough, but at F2.8, I noticed somesoftness in the corners, which improves at F5.6. I did not observe much, if at all, lateral CA, but I did not try hard to induce it. Autofocus is sluggish and there is no switch to easily change between manual focus and auto. Bokeh is okay but the heptagonal shape of the iris diaphragm is noticeable in the specular highlights and sunstars are fair to good at f16 and f22, respectively. The build is plasticky, but quite decent and lens information is printed, not engraved, but then again, the lens is very light weight and the build is sufficient for a lens of this price.Overall, this is a nice little lens, considering the $350 asking price, and will be enjoyed especially by those people, like me, who like to take close up images of subjects in an environmental context, instead of the background being almost completely blurred out. It will make a great travel lens owing to its lightweight construction and versatility, but otherwise, I doubt this lens will replace my Loxia 21mm lens for landscapes or architectural photography. After my experience with the Tamron Di III 24mm, I doubt that I’ll purchase the 35mm or 20mm versions because I have better alternatives. I still plant to purchase the Sony FE 24mm F/1.4 GM lens next year, but this nifty little Tamron 24mm will always be very useful for my travel and shooting low angle wide angle close up shots.

This lens is amazing for the price as it punches above its class on image quality giving the user very good contrasty images while also being impressively sharp! The Macro functionality and weather sealing are a definite plus! But it does have its cons. Firstly its struggles to achieve focus in low light, theres quite alot of hunting as well. Sometimes it will lose focus and wont achieve focus again until i point the camera elsewhere and achieve focus again. AF speed is slow even in good light definitely not an action lens.

Brutally sharp w/ great contrast and a pretty solid build (even if it is hard plastic). If manually focusing, it's so razor thin and sharp on the focus draw that it's easy to miss, so auto-focus is pretty much necessaryAlso, the auto-focus is horrible if left to its own devices, but here's a tip:Put your focus mode on AF-C or DMF and press that shutter button down a hair. I just did 2 events, got 2500 pictures and of that number 2200 were quickly focused on and sharp as a button. Then and o0nly then is it really good, great for the price, and you can shoot without fear. SO SET IT UP!Great lens and I'm definitely buying the 24mm next.

I wanted this lens as a light walk around lens and also a "macro" as it focuses to a 1:2 ratio. I own five other Tamron E-mount lenses (all zooms) and they are all working fine. This one refused to focus on my camera and when it stopped hunting and locked focus, the subject was out of focus. I called Tamron and they said they had never heard of the problem. Forum search and research said otherwise. A lot of people are having the same issue. Apparently (and unfortunately) this is limited to the A7RIV only. I had to return it. I really wanted this lens to work but unfortunately it did not perform for me. Precision offered to send me a replacement but I did not want to put them through it again. Without the focusing issue, this lens would get solid 5-stars.
I take mostly pictures of stills, so the frequent complaints about autofocus have not bothered me. This has become my go-to lens for hikes in the mountains, walks around town, the backyard, and just about anything else that does not move. Its close-up capability allows me to switch immediately from landscapes to flowers and back. It is plenty sharp over the whole distance range, as well as from center to edge. My only gripe is the overly tight fit on the A7III (shared with its 24mm cousin).
Been wanting/needing a 24mm for a while for architectural purposes, and with my budget, this inexpensive Tamron option seemed good. I was between this and the Samyang, but have been unimpressed with their 18mm ff option. Strangely, Samyang's crop sensor lenses are much better at similar prices.FYI, this lens is NOT naturally suited for architectural work, as it is not aspherically corrected at all. The saving graces for me, are that it is sharp all the way to the corners, and that I can use it on my Sony A7r3. Because the resolution is still decent after the more than 20 points of distortion correction it needs in camera raw, the images are usable. Just realize that you are going to lose quite a bit of resolution after fixing the images from this lens. Just realize that you are going to lose quite a bit of resolution after fixing the images from this lens. Shooting with in-camera distortion correction in the Sony is a necessity for framing things up right. That sharpness, and less of a need for distortion correction for landscapes, makes it nice for shooting in the wild. I haven't used it for a proper video, yet, but it seems it will be good enough for basic work. It is a little slow to focus (doesn't hunt) in video mode, and the focus breathing is pretty considerable. Again, use distortion correction. For the price on sale for a sharp full frame lens, I'd say it's worth it.
I really enjoy this lens. It is light to carry and I have found this to be an excellent lens. The quality of the photos are sharp. I like the fact you can get up very close to your subject if you want (about 5 inches) and the background is a nice soft blur so your subject really pops. I use this lens on a Sony A6000 so the field of view is 36mm which is great for street photography and use as a walk around lens. It is a versatile lens that I allows me to get a variety of photos when walking around. Highly recommend this lens.
I just got this lens and have used it on both my a7iii and my a6400. It is very sharp on the a7iii and seems equally sharp on the a6400. The half-macro (1:2) capability is particularly nice to have as a bonus, and on the a6400 the extra 1.5 reach gives a 3:4 full-frame macro equivalent. It is also super light and quite at home on the a6400. . All for an incredibly low price. MI ahve two disappointments: (1) it is a slightly cheaper feeling than tamron's other lens (I own the 28-200mm and the 17-70mm in comparison) but the other lenses are heavier and that might be coming into my subjective sense of build quality. (2) focusing moves the front element back and forward within the lens body -- I hadn't realized this. Can't complain about the value, though, at $200 during the current Tamron sale.
Pros:low price-I can risk this lens; excellent image quality-sharp at close distance, good CA control, flare control, contrast, good bokeh & color balance, sharp across the frame wide open and minimal distortion; weather-sealed; lightweight; good manual focus control and ergonomics on Sony A7; 67mm filter thread; hood allows close focus into bright light.Cons:terrible AF-very slow, can't lock in low light, AF-C pulsates and clicks aperture, DWF best option; hood does not allow filter use-filter needed for full weather-seal because front elements move; fairly strong vignetting wide-open; slightly undersaturated and some mostly correctable La-CA on the edges or in shade-to-contrast situations; construction feels cheap. When this lens was announced by Tamron at ... MorePros:low price-I can risk this lens; excellent image quality-sharp at close distance, good CA control, flare control, contrast, good bokeh & color balance, sharp across the frame wide open and minimal distortion; weather-sealed; lightweight; good manual focus control and ergonomics on Sony A7; 67mm filter thread; hood allows close focus into bright light.Cons:terrible AF-very slow, can't lock in low light, AF-C pulsates and clicks aperture, DWF best option; hood does not allow filter use-filter needed for full weather-seal because front elements move; fairly strong vignetting wide-open; slightly undersaturated and some mostly correctable La-CA on the edges or in shade-to-contrast situations; construction feels cheap. When this lens was announced by Tamron at $350, it was high on my radar because it checked a lot of boxes for me; lightweight for hiking and weather-sealed, I don't shoot 35mm often so won't invest much, close-focus capability, sharp enough for Sony sensor, flare control cause I like shooting into the light and 67mm filter thread to match my other E-mount lenses. But I waited and the price is now $200 + a free UV filter. I have not had good luck buying cheap lenses but this one totally delivers on image quality and holds up to the A7r4's sensor. The cons of this lens are a function of design mostly and are trade-offs rather than flaws. A 1:2 magnification is going to slow AF, keeping weight down requires plastic and small front element-thus the vignetting, but also allows macro performance and tight hood design. The lens width is necessary for a 67mm filter thread. As with low-CA lenses, there is less saturation and some lacking pixie dust. The AF was so bad at times I thought of returning it, but I was pleasantly surprised by the manual focus control which for a close-focus lens is critical. I think the negative reviews of the focus ring were relative to MF lenses, but for a fly-by-wire ring it is decently damped and the width of the lens and location of the focus ring fits nicely into my left hand for one finger focus. It is unfortunate that Tamron did not design the hood to fit over filters, but the flare control, cost, recessed front element and close focus design eliminate protective filter needs. I mostly have shot macro with this lens and I can crop on the A7r4 to get insects and small flowers or frame them for wide-angle. There will be perspective distortion but for landscapes there is little distortion to worry about.
35mm is my normal lens. I wanted a native one for my a7Rii and had debated many options. When this dropped to $199 I figured it was worth the try. Optically, it's outstanding. The 1:2 close focus range is vey usable. The AF performance is highly accurate, though not the fastest. I really like the flat hood, it stays on all the time, is easy to store and allows filters on top! Except for action shots, I can't ask for more in a lens, especially at this price point. I do very little video, so the less than perfect AF speed and a slightly noisy AF motor is of no consequence for me. However, there are likely several lenses better for those who are looking for the best choice for video.
