EISA Award for "Best Product" Winner 2024-2025 - The 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 is an evolution of the first generation of the highly acclaimed 70-180mm zoom lens, which has received much attention since its market launch and has now been improved in several ways. The most significant innovation is the integration of the VC image stabilizer developed by Tamron. Despite this new feature, which allows for sharper images even at longer shutter speeds, the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 remains the most compact and lightweight lens in its class. The revised optical design of the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 achieves uncompromisingly high image quality across the entire focal length range. At 70 mm, the shortest focusing distance is only 0.3 m, which is an improvement of 0.55 m and significantly expands the creative possibilities of this fast telephoto zoom lens. The new model version is equipped with Tamron's proven VXD autofocus (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) with a linear motor, which focuses quickly and precisely on the subject for both photos and videos. The lens is compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility and the Tamron Lens Utility Mobile App. Both applications have been developed by Tamron and allow for custom configuration of the lens to optimally adapt its functionality to the specific shooting situation. The new lens design impresses with its user-friendly operation and scratch-resistant surface.

Compact for a f/2.8 zoom
15 April 2023Michael

I bought this to use with a Sony a7c. I wanted a zoom tele that was compact and yet have f/2.8 through the entire zoom range. This lens fits the bill. It doesn't have stabilization, but my camera body does. While it has internal focus, the lens does extend when zooming. It also only zooms to 180mm. For me, the trade off is that I get a lens that weighs half of the competition, is smaller than the other lenses, and fits in the bag nicely. In use, the lens is great. Images are sharp wide open, focus is snappy, and it does everything I need, even in low light.

I am a long time B&H customer but ended up buying this lens locally. I wanted to add my experience with this lens for future buyers who want actual user's feedback. On a Sony A7RIV this lens is simply stunning. Over the years I have shot with Canon L, Pentax star and Nikon VR f2.8 variant of this focal length. This lens is by far one of the sharpest and easily the lightest of the bunch. I am doing a project that requires me to shoot wide open. This lens delivers the goods and I have images that are just as sharp and contrasty at f2.8 as they are at f5.6 or f8. The focusing is silent and fast too.

I wont get into image quality, you all already know how fantastic this lens is. It's my go-to for portraits, and sports photography. I hardly use primes anymore for portraits, this is just perfect. The ONLY drawback i have to this lens, ugh, and it's a big one, the zoom has issues. Sometimes it gets stuck between 70-85, other times it gets stuck in the high end. The first time this happened it was within a month of purchase so i was able to return it to the eBay seller and got a full refund. The second purchase, I figured I'd buy from B&H so i minimize my risk. Well, it happened again, 18 months after purchase so it's no longer within warranty period. I have to be super gentle with it and it still works just fine, but it does get annoying.

Good value, flawed for video work
3 May 2023

All in all, for the price its good. But it comes with compromises. Especially for video work.I like : the size and weight, the optical quality (for photos), the little extra (70mm macro capability), the large aperture.I know that most photo lenses aren't thought to be parfocals, but Ialways check what I'm dealing with when live zooming while recording video and this lens cannot be used for moderate to fast zooming. As long as you keep your focal choice while shooting its nice, but as soon as you would like to keep the zoom movement in the shot, its bad. Everytime you zoom in or out, everything goes blurry until you hard stop. And no its not the autofocus. Even in MF, when you use the zoom the image goes blurry. Its also somewhat made worse by the plastic feeling of it.I guess it depends on the work, but not being able to keep a fast zoom in or out really cripple my use case.It would be a 4-5 star if was mainly doing photos.

Great Lens, I'd say its comparable to GM
8 September 2021

I shoot mainly low light sports (dog shows), and wildlife. I had used the sony 70-200 2.8 gm on my a7iii and a9. Its an absolutely incredible lens, with incredible image quality, loved it. However, the weight of the lens made me use it less and less over the years. I do have some back problems and it was very difficult to lug around at a show all day long and eventually i decided it wasnt worth it and wanted to look into alternatives. Needless to say, i am thrilled i came up on reviews of this tamron. I had not been a fan of Tamron lenses when i shot canon years ago, but its evident the lenses have come a long way. The images are beautifully sharp on this lens, the weight is half of what the GM is, and focus is fast and accurate. In all, it really is an excellent and light weight lens , the image quality is excellent with action/low light and im a pixel peeper! If you dont want to lug around a heavy 2.8, do consider the tamron !

Great budget f/2.8 lens
22 August 2021

I use the Sony 200-600mm for sports photography in daylight, but once the sun starts to set, or indoors, that lens struggles. Instead of spending $2500 on a 70-200 G Master, I opted for the much less expensive Tamron 70-180 f/2.8.No complaints at all. The lens is sharp (images after significant cropping look more than fine by me), and auto focus is super fast on a Sony A7 iii.I ended up shooting a polo match with the 70-180 once the sun started to set. After culling through everything, 70% of the keepers were from the 70-180 - which is remarkable given the distance to the action at the far end of the field. No complaints with this lens, which is light enough to hand hold; comparatively I mount my beloved 200-600 on a monopod. I would buy this lens again in a heartbeat and have no reason to not recommend it to someone shooting fast paced sports.I shoot 200mm on an APS-C, but that is effectively 300mm, so I can't speak to the loss of 20mm versus a 70-200.

Insanely Sharp Lens
22 August 2022

Over the years, I have shot with similar focal range with Canon L, Nikon VR and Tamron for Pentax and this lens rules them all. It is by far the sharpest lens of this focal range I have ever shot with. For some reason almost all my new gen Tamron for Sony lenses have an issue with focusing in AF-S mode on my Sony A7RIV. This lens is not exception. So the solution is to shoot it on AF-C mode.Other than that minor issue, this lens delivers the good with flying colors. This is the only lens of this focal range I have shot with that is as sharp at f2.8 as it is at f5.6. I am doing a project that requires wide open aperture shots for maximum impact. This is true shooting at 70mm as it is at 180mm or anything in between.Easily the sharpest lens I have. Go Tamron.

Lightweight
26 August 2022

Tamron made a 8xx gram 70-200 range lengs. That alone is amazing. I know lens extend while zooming is cheaper but it actually makes the lens compact. Easier to carry in the bag. Very sharp but seems less contrast than my other lens. The bouns is it has very good close up capability. I no longer carry dedicated macro lens for my food photography. I use this lens now. More versatile and close up is good enough for my need.I wish Tarmon will come out version II. Use their new linear focus and update the body to the 35-150 stardard.

My favorite lens

This gem provides the best of all worlds. Fast constant f/2.8 aperture, long reach, great build, small size, stellar images. If you like 70-200mm results but hate carrying the lens, try this Tamron. It fits in the same holster bag as a 24-70mm and weighs less than any of the 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. No frills simple design with no external controls is great for me. I'm normally shooting this lens wide open at high shutter speeds so the lack of OIS ("VC") does not matter at all. Being small and nondescript looking makes this a great option for travel versus a "big white" style lens.Lens AF keeps up with tracking in the a9 II and resolution keeps up with the a7R IV. This lens does trading card style portraits on the sidelines then captures fast action in the game.

As a professional photographer this is my go-to lens for events. To summarize my thoughts early here, if you are a photographer who carries around 2 cameras having this on your sony while having something like the sigma 28-70 2.8 or the tamron version is the PERFECT setup.I left my other brand of camera for Sony because of this setup. Literally from my Z9/Z7ii combo and associated lenses to my now Sony A1 and Sony a7iv combo, i have shaved off in some cases as many as 5lbs. 5lbs!!!!Now I think my entire setup weighs just over 5 or 6 pounds TOTAL. 2 cameras and 2 lenses. Not too bad. They are sharp and the glass and engineering are up to par. All those fuji cameras years and years ago were popular because they were much smaller and lighter. All that being said. I don't see iBIS in sony cameras being anywhere near optical IS. So if you shoot lots of super low light events and you cant seem to hold your camera still enough, maybe you need the new Gmaster instead. I however have shot several concerts with no problem using ibis with this lens.Hope that helps someone.
