The 2023 P790s are excellent irons, but I hope that you do not have the experience that I have had, both frustration and expense. Here is my story. I was fitted for new irons on 8/17/2023, and I ordered P790-23 clubs (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW) through my Club that same day. Received the new clubs on 9/11/2023. I immediately inspected the clubs and noticed that the PW appeared to have more loft than the standard specs. I was told by my Club that the Club was unable to check lofts since the Club does not own loft-lie equipment. On 9/14/2023 I drove to Jacksonville, Florida (almost an hour drive). Lofts and lies were checked by a PGA Pro at Masterfit Golf. The PW came in at 46 degrees (one degree weak) which confirmed my visual assessment. I was looking for these Phantom Black irons a couple of months ago and was so excited when they popped up last month. I had to pull the plug and upgrade immediately.After a few days on the range getting my distances on each club I’m ready for the course. I can attack the pin with any club without hesitation. These clubs are amazingly accurate and the sweet spot feels like butter. The angle of approach allows the ball to stop very close to the hole-unbelievable! So I went to a very reputable fitter in Billings Mt which is 5 hours away in January of this year and had a good experience so I thought. The fitter was very patient with me and help on my selection of clubs because this was my first ever fitting and I was going from a 15 year old set of Adam's irons to something custom. So I ended up going with P790 with 3/4" increase in shaft length and 3 degree upright lie with a standard loft steel shaft. During the fitting these clubs felt amazing they felt flush the distance was spot on and I could keep going bragging on the clubs. After a few shots with the driver I switch back to my irons and they just feel terrible. So my buddy is with me so I asked him if I could hit a few of his new PXG's and I crushed them. I'm not real sure what's going on with the new set is but I can't recommend there clubs to anyone unfortunately. I even had a few guys say they were looking at getting the P790's so I told them too take a few swings and they did not like them either. I used to really enjoy golf until now I'm disappointed the I dropped $1500 or so on new clubs that I hit great at the fitting but can't hit them now. I've played 3 rounds so far this year in the past week and a half and really dislike these clubs

I've always heard the P790's are some of the best in the game if you're looking for a players distance iron. When it was time for new irons in the bag, I had to hit these in the simulator. WOW, they feel great! I tried both steel and graphite, the graphite felt so good in the simulator so I went ahead with purchasing a 4-PW set with the Mitsubishi Chemical MMT 75 stiff iron shafts. When they arrived I was a bit skeptical because I've always played steel. Played my first round on the course with them today and NO REGRETS!! These irons feel amazing, you absolutely don't need to shoot under par to feel confident hitting these bad boys. The MMT graphite shafts make the golf shots feel so effortless and I noticed a bit more distance as well. Was fitted to the 2nd Gen P790 but held off since I was just a few years into the RSI2 (which I thought were a measurable upgrade to the Callaway FT irons). 1 week of daily play (some range range and a round) with the new set and I'm very pleased with all aspects of the new set. Gained 1/2 club over RSI2s but had a monumental increase in playability with 20% increase in max height and 10% increase in spin and a bit more in the long irons. Will now carry a 3 iron again since I get very good height with the P790. The distance and height are unaffected by changes in strike location anywhere near the center and the feedback is good - i.e. the flight remains good while the sound and softness of an off-center strike are most evident. ... MoreVery happy with the performance. Strongly recommend at least an entry-level fitting as results can improve significantly with proper shaft/grip combinations. Good Luck!
I replaced some older Nike cavity backs with these. I was looking into some of the game improvement irons out there today and I just did not like their look or feel and I definitely didn’t like the stronger lofts. I knew blades were above my skill level as well. That’s when I started reading about the P790s and watching reviews about them. I went down to a local golf shop here in Hawai’i and gave them a try and absolutely loved them. They perfectly bridged that gap between GI irons and blades. They offer a great amount of forgiveness for slight miss hits and a very nice feel but offer you more control than GIs do. These irons really reward you for hitting good shots. I went down to a local golf shop here in Hawai’i and gave them a try and absolutely loved them. They perfectly bridged that gap between GI irons and blades. They offer a great amount of forgiveness for slight miss hits and a very nice feel but offer you more control than GIs do. These irons really reward you for hitting good shots. I love the sleek lower profile look of these and they’re a real treat to play with. Overall, I love them and recommend them to players of really any level but especially mid handicappers looking to get away from GI clubs.
I got the 4-PW P790s just a month ago and they look as good as they feel!I love the irons thus far. For example, sometimes I like to use 4-iron off the tee on shorter par 4 where driver isn't entirely necessary to reach the green in 2 shots and I might be trying to navigate a tight fairway or just having an off-day with driver. The higher launch angle of the P790s has been very noticeable and advantageous to this part of my game where I can get an extra 15 or so yards off the tee. Being able to get 200-210 yards out of my 4-iron with a pure strike is great is fantastic and opens up a lot of options to my game.3. Distance - this doesn't mean that the P790s will inherently add significant distance to your shots but I would suspect it will add some at the very least.Overall I am impressed how the P790s really incorporate everything needed from the perspective of a low handicap golfer to a high handicap golfer.I highly recommend these irons to anyone on the market for a new set! Definitely try out the P770s and P7MCs too to really find the right iron for yourself within the P series. I'd be willing to bet there is something in the TaylorMade P series that fits your game!Don't let the price tag scare you off, sometimes the price is justified or even a good deal. These are great irons. Worth the money.

The cavity back game improvement irons were good but lacked the pure and solid feedback after hitting a quality golf shot. Purchasing a quality set of irons is a great investment in your enjoyment and love of the game. In my case, I paid 50 dollars for a fitting at a local facility. The best 50 dollars I ever spent. I was there for an hour hitting the P790's with the use of a simulator. The fitter made several tweaks and adjustments. As the fitting continued, I could feel the improvement in the ball strike and weight of the club. Based on the fitting results I went from 85g shafts to 105g shafts, and my lie angle was 1 degree flat. I then went on TaylorMade's website and customized my P790's to the fitter's specifications. I realize this has been a lengthy review, but I am a big believer in these irons. If you are like me, someone who needs some forgiveness, I strongly recommend you give the P790's a try.
