Big sound, teeny tiny package

Great performance in such a tiny package. I’ve owned a few noise-canceling headphones and these are certainly some of the most impressive. My go-to plane headphones have been the behemoth Sony WH-XB910N. The sound on those is so very bassy but they’re huge and take up half of my underseat bag. These Technics have plenty of bass, great sound clarity, amazing battery life, and fit in my pocket.Just like my trusty Sony’s, there are a few modes of noise reduction to choose from. I’ve been using mine in the office so I’ve had it set on the ambient mode and it’s surprising how well it works. The default value is 80 (percent?) but you can crank it up to 100 and pick up every keyboard click in the area. The default value is 80 (percent?) but you can crank it up to 100 and pick up every keyboard click in the area. The noise canceling is similarly adjustable in the app and has worked great in my testing (loud fans, annoying coworkers, etc). Unfortunately, they arrived after I got back from vacation so I can’t comment on how well they work in the de facto Airbus test. The sound quality is great out-of-the-box which is good because there aren’t a heck of a lot of options. All of the sound customization is through the app and it provides limited settings but does have an adjustable EQ. I’m an extra bass kinda guy so that’s where I set it and I found the highs and mids to be unmuddied. The buds have touch-sensitive controls which is very handy but also hard to remember. In the app, you can configure the left bud and right bud to have independent controls for next/last track, volume, pause, noise-cancelation mode, etc. I prefer to not be perpetually confused so I set them both the same. In any event, you get to choose what a long tap or single, double, triple taps trigger. A reason I set both buds the same is because they can be used singly. Just one! At a time! Great (or horrible) for when that coworker insists on talking to you while you’re trying to rock out to a bassy jam. There doesn’t seem to be any complicated method of setting them to be used one-at-a-time. All I’ve done is take one out of the case (or put one back in) and it announces that there’s been a change in the connection and it works. So simple! The app is maybe not so simple. I definitely prefer the Sony app to Technics’ but I guess I don’t have a choice. I’ve only used the Bose app for a bluetooth speaker (as opposed to headphones) but that also seems better. Oh, well. The Technics app gets the job done and you don’t have much of a choice about it. On the first connection to my phone, it auto-updated the firmware on the buds. And it seems that the app is the only way to change settings such as: noise cancelation strength, ambient sound strength, EQs, connection modes/codecs, multipoint options, touch-sensor gestures, or voice assistants. Huge in the win category, though, is that everything just worked. There’s even a neat little notification that shows the battery levels of each individual bud and the case! The charging has been simple. Like many things these days, all you gotta do is jam a usb-c cord in. They’re tiny little batteries so it probably doesn’t even matter if you use your slowest charger. Though I’ll probably never need to use it, I tested out the wireless power sharing from my Samsung S23 Ultra and it worked flawlessly to top up the case’s charge.Oh, and they automatically pause the music when you pop them out of your ear. What more could you ask for?

I received these earbuds through the "Hey, Bullseye" program in exchange for my unbiased, honest review. I tried them for the first time last weekend when I had multiple back-to-back flights for business travel. I tried them for about an hour each on different flights.Overall, I found the noise cancelation to be quite good. I usually use Bose over the headphones and those are still slightly better for noise cancelation, but they are large and can be clunky. The Technics were small and fit in the ear canal, so getting the right fit is important. They provide a number of additional earpieces to ensure the right fit. One of the best features of the earbuds is the ability to let voice still come through and cancel out all of the other noise in the environment. This is particularly handy when the flight attendant comes through and asks for your drink order.I've tried a few different earbuds like these in the past and had an issue where my ear canal has an allergic reaction. I'm happy to say that I did not experience that with these earbuds. I continue to use them and have not had any problems with my ears. They do feel a little heavy in my ears when I am out walking with them, but sitting still (like on an airplane) is fine.I also like that they use the USB-C charger and can charge wirelessly. With Apple switching to USB-C, this simplifies my cord game.Overall, these are pretty good earbuds. I would certainly add them to you consideration set.

Great sound but poor touch controls and app. Probably good for audiophiles, but not great for casual users
27 December 2023

These buds aren't great. They sound amazing--I used them on a flight, and I couldn't hear any noises--but the touch controls and the app are awful. Even after a few months, I can't figure out how to use the app or the touch controls. I still don't know how to turn up the volume on them. The only controls that are intuitive enough to remember is the next song/previous song and start/stop a song. I guess I can also figure out how to turn on the noise cancelling, because that's on the other ear bud.So I'm sure I could customize the touch controls on the buds with the app, but the app is another problem: it is trash. It looks like the app was an after-thought while making these buds. It's a bummer, too, because these buds have a ton of features that I've only seen on ... MoreThese buds aren't great. I guess I can also figure out how to turn on the noise cancelling, because that's on the other ear bud.So I'm sure I could customize the touch controls on the buds with the app, but the app is another problem: it is trash. It looks like the app was an after-thought while making these buds. It's a bummer, too, because these buds have a ton of features that I've only seen on them (I've owned to previous versions of Pixel Buds and didn't have nearly as many features). Unfortunately, even the sections of the app where you'd go to configure things isn't intuitive. So I spend a lot of time poking around the app, getting irritated, trying to find a setting. The benefits of these buds are the different sized tips that come with them and the "find my fit" part of the app that helps you decide what size tip that goes into your ear fits best. Then, the multipoint audio is also awesome (you can have your buds connected to two devices via Bluetooth at once). Lastly, there's a wide variety of audio codecs supported, including LDAC, that I don't really know what it is, but it sounds cool! The case is fine too, although compared to my Pixel Buds case, it's bulky. Plus, I have no idea what all the different color lights on the case mean. One time I had the buds in the case sitting next to my tablet and the case was flashing red and beeping randomly. The case charges off of USB-C which is awesome.I'm going to have to say that these buds hold a charge for a while too. While in full ANC mode on a three-hour flight, I never got a low battery warning. I then spent five days on vacation and only charged the case once because I thought about it. So I'm happy with the battery life, at least. There's a feature on these buds that supposedly let you use your native digital assistant (like Alexa or Google Assistant), but I don't know how to make that work. That's a killer feature for me, so not having it is a big knock against these. Again, I'm sure I could configure the touch control in the app...but the app is trash, so...I'm going to say that if you're an audiophile, these buds are for you. There's a ton of settings and tweaks you can perform. But if you're a casual user who wants easy-to-use buds that just work with minimal tinkering, stay away from these.

Great sounding, premium ear buds
4 December 2023

The Technics EAH-AZ80-S are by far the most premium set of earbuds I have ever used. Right out of the box I found this to be a high quality product.Setting up for the first time was a breeze... and since these have "multipoint connectivity" I was able to connect to both my iPhone and Windows PC without a problem. The app even lets you control the voice indicator for when new devices are connect (generic "a device has been connected" or specific "a phone has been connected"). This is my first experience with noise cancellation and I found the setup to be a breeze. I had assumed that the "standard" size earbuds would be sufficient for me as I typically do not change these when I try out new earbuds, but the app actually walks you through the sizing and tests to tell you for each ear whether to increase/decrease the size until the setup is optimal. I actually found them to be both more comfortable and better at noise cancellation after following this step in the app! My only (minor) complaint is that it takes some time to get used to the noise cancellation feature... I found myself slightly dizzy/disoriented when these were in but there was no noise (getting onto a work call early or after the call ended, before I started playing music, etc.) as there is almost a "pressure" in your ears due to the complete lack of sound. I found by slightly adjusting the level of noise cancellation I was able to reduce this negative side effect and after a week or so became used to this. I love that it includes a charging case (the case charges while plugged in, and then the earbuds charge when in the case so if I head out with the earbuds, the case will continue to charge). It does use USB-C so that's something to consider and ensure you have a means to charge it. Otherwise... I found this to have great, full sound (streaming music, taking calls, etc.) and I would highly recommend!

Technics digital wireless stereo earphones is in a class of its own! It delivers on an immersive and vibrant sound experience. Out of its minimalistic packaging, you'll find a well-crafted set of earphones nested in an elegant brushed metal pill box case (I happen to have the silver color set which looks amazing). The case is smooth with a tiny bit of weight and can add up to an additional 17 hours of play time to your earphones. The quality of construction of both the case and earphones themselves feel solid and are very comfortable to wear. The Technics are designed to ensure a perfect fit for each user and the box includes seven different sizes to choose from. The companion app actually walks you through step-by-step to test the earphone sizes to customize your fit.You don't want to skip the setup steps as it ensures the perfect fit so you get the best sound experience. Pairing these earphones was simple as the app picks up on the earphones without any issue. After pairing, they connect to your phone quickly and with ease. These earphones worked well with my Android phone and I presume they would work equally well with an iOS device. I was impressed that the connection with my windows PC was also quick and painless to setup.Battery life has been excellent and I get pretty close if not more than then advertised 7 hours of playback time. Paired with the case, you can easily get through a couple of day without needing a recharge. My favorite things about these headphones by far is the sound quality, it just blew me away!! Superb dynamic range with total customizable options, but even the default setting sounded amazing. The noise canceling and deep noise suppression is truly remarkable, it does a superb job of blocking out external sound while in use. As for use for on calls, it does an excellent job as well as voice quality is clear and crisp. Other are able to hear me clearly without distortions. I’m able to have long meetings without any problems as they feel very comfortable.I’m really impressed with how well the Technics works despite not being the same brand as my phone, so in comparison to other earphones that I’ve had, this is certainly an excellent choice. So, if you’re looking for a new set of premium earphones that not only work well, but has a modern classical aesthetic, then Technics is worth a look!

I found the Technics EAH-AZ80E-S on one of those 'best of' lists. The reviews were all generally positive, with only the price and noise-cancelling being considered an issue. My old Galaxy Buds don't have noise-cancelling, and I've never missed it. As for the price - the other models featured in the "best of" lists either had (according to reviews) some weakness that the Technics buds didn't, or were even more expensive, or both.I chose the silver/grey colourway - the brushed metal look of the case and the top side of the buds reminded me of my parents' hi-fi from way back when =DUnfortunately, I was in for an aesthetic disappointment - the colour of the plastic body of the buds isn't to my taste. In the photos, it looks like it's a cool grey that goes well with the colour of the metal covering the top. The plastic in my buds is a warmer grey - almost a pale beige - which in my eyes clashes somewhat with the colour of the metal. Both the metal and plastic are visible when I'm wearing the earbuds. The sound was an absolute epiphany, though - detailed, balanced, and clear. Whether listening to a podcast or music, these earbuds are a delight. I was also pleasantly surprised by how securely they sit in my ear, and how comfortable they are to wear, despite their size and weight.Their battery life is shorter than I'd like - maybe 6, 7 hours. And they seem to gobble up the case's power, too - it's fine for the first full charge, but only for a partial charge the second time.I haven't used them for calls yet, so can't comment on that.I don't intend to download the app, as the earbuds work fine on iOS, Android and Windows without it.

The package arrives in a neat little black box, everything is well put together and the box opens with a rewarding slow slide. Spare ear piece covers to fit a variety of ears was included as well as a charging cord. They do not include a Micro USB brick for plugging into a wall. The items themselves are attractive, the gray titanium color is pleasant and looks good. The fit was superb and I felt like I could do my normal daily activities and the earbuds would stay put, but vigorous exercise did loosen them a little but they did not fall out.The sound was quite good. The noise isolation part might not be quite as good as the earbud pro, their main competitor, but it was decent with a good seal in the ear. I thought the bass and treble and midrange were all identifiable and well presented acoustically. I didn't long for any specific audio enhancements as these ear buds seemed to work extremely well. The charging time was very short and the battery life was long enough that all daily use was covered and all I needed was to recharge them over night.I think these ear buds were really nice. They don't pretend to be nor cost what some high level audiophile level ear buds might be but for the money and the quality, I think they are a great product and wonderful deal.
