I have never had a direct drive turntable so after reading many favorable reviews regarding the Technics SL-1200G I decided to make a purchase. In my opinion the Technics SL-1200G is truly a high-end turntable without the high-end price tag. The quality of it's workmanship is excellent the adjustment capabilities of it's tonearm regarding tracking force, anti-skate, VTA are easily made. The sound and bass response of the SL-1200G are amazing.My other turntables are a Rega P6, Thorens TD-124 Idler, and a Basis Debut with a Graham Phantom II tonearm, for the time being the Technics SL-1200G turntable is going to be my go-to turntable for music listening!

I love this deck. It is easy to use, and outperforms the MKII models. My only issues are 1: The spindle could be a little taller, and 2: The tonearm height should go down farther. On the one I purchased, the tonearm height when set to Zero, does not go flush with the adjusting ring, and that makes it hard to set up some cartridges. Either a shim on the headshell, or a thicker mat is needed. The problem with using a thicker mat is then the spindle height. Other than that, it’s basically perfect. If you have many cartridges like I do, then the shimming becomes an issue. I opted for a thicker MKII mat. Still a wonderful unit.

I've been a Technics owner for ~25 years. My DJing days are behind me, so I decided to sell my SL-1200MK2s to fund a GR. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I've done the right thing. I'm pretty disappointed with the new turntable.The quality of the paintwork is not great. This is actually a replacement unit. The first one had similar issues and was replaced by Richer. I thought it must have been a one off, but both the original and the replacement were poorly finished.The platter mat is not perfectly round, so from above, appears to 'wobble' from side to side when the platter is spinning. However, it is its sound and ease of use which are the most important factors for me. I have owned lower models in the Technics range back in the 1970's through to the early 1990's. I have also owned turntables by many other manufacturers in the past. I still own a current model British made turntable with a fixed headshell which I use in a different part of the house. I have also in the past frequently had access to use turntables made by other competitors. So, I know my way around a turntable. There is no contest. I have a collection of six different phono cartridges. They each have attributes that I like with either different types of music or different types of record, such as stereo or mono recordings. Swapping cartridges over to get the sound I want is just so easy and fuss free with this turntable. This process would be a right pain in the neck with a fixed headshell tonearm. I do not have any negative comments about this turntable. However, I would suggest that any new users treat the VTA setting guide in the manual as just a general guideline. In my experience, this turntables arm sits higher, (at even the lowest setting), than many of the arms on other turntables that I have owned and used. I had trouble getting one of my cartridges to play correctly when I measured its depth and set the VTA setting at 2 as suggested in the manual. When I lowered the VTA setting to position 1, the cartridge performed as it should. I am so pleased I bought this turntable. It is used nearly every day and I try to avoid commitments that will prevent me from being at home to use it. I guess that I may never use the pitch control feature, as I am not a DJ and bought it for home hi fi use. Its a great turntable and if you can afford it you should buy one. It has the ability to really enhance your listening experience. Got mine at Richer Sounds in Newcastle and their service was first class. It always is and it does not really matter which member of staff you deal with. All of the staff are friendly, polite and know about the products they are selling. I've been using this store for many years and it does not matter if you are buying a low budget item or a more expensive item like this turntable. In my experience their customer service is always among the best you will get anywhere.

Less background rumble, getting more detail out of the grooves. The tonearm is low mass, more stiff and better insulated to prevent feedback. However, since the tonearm is made from an alloy of magnesium, a graphite or magnesium headshell is highly recommeded to prevent resonance (and disappointment) caused by different stiffnesses of materials. The supplied ground cable is rather cheap, but luckily its an all modular design when it comes to cables, so it can be swapped with a better cable. I have been enjoying my new Technics SL-1200GR turntable. I had to wait about a month for it to come in stock. I purchased the 1200GR with a Sumiko Amethyst MM cartridge. I debated on getting the 1200G but just could not justify the additional $2300. I highly recommend this table with this cartridge combo. It sounds amazing and the ease of use cannot be overstated. Music Direct preinstalled the cartridge on the headshell, so I just needed to set the balance/tracking force and reverify the antiskating. I was up and running in an hour.

Purchased with a Goldring E3 Cartridge which seems great value at under £80. Build quality is superb, easy to set up, very straight forward operation but most importantly the sound quality is superb. My floorstanding Pro-Ac Response D18 speakers have responded brilliantly to the Technics, never heard so much quality bass through them. When I stream Tidal after listening to the deck, it just seems to lack something now. Totally worth the money and thumbs-up for the cartridge as well. The turntable was to replace another TT I bought in 2015. I was curious between a DD and a belt drive TT I had. After setting up the Technics, sound wise it was an improvement over the other TT. Bass was tight, full and well defined. To my ears the technics was warmer not lean which to my old ears I like. Overall I am happy with the Technics and the SQ it produces. Its a keeper.
I’ve owned this table for over 2 years now. I’ve tested turntables that cost 3x as much that aren’t even in the same league as this table. The SL-1200G is simply an end game turntable. It will be the last turntable you’ll ever buy. I would highly recommend upgrading the stock power, audio and ground cables to something better. Music Direct has all the cable upgrades you’ll need. I would also upgrade the headshell. I upgraded mine to SoundSmith’s wood headshell. It definitely improved the sound (I’m also using a SoundSmith Zephyr MIMC Star and a SoundSmith MCP2 phono stage). I still haven’t found a slipmat that works better then the stock one... a lot of people online swear it’s better to upgrade it. I own a 40 year old original Technics SL-1200 to side by side to compare and this is simply head to toe redesigned for the audiophile unlike the old 1200s. Highly recommend!!!!
