This single malt whiskey was inspired by the old Blackpitts area directly behind the new Teeling Distillery in the Newmarket (Old Liberties) of Dublin City. This area is synonymous with industry and in particular maltings (Malting Houses). Traditional as well as the largest maltings in Ireland were located in the Blackpitts. By using peat smoke to dry the barley during the malting process, the resulting malt produces a distinctive smoke flavor profile. What makes Teeling Blackpitts Single Malt Peated Irish Whiskey unique, however, is the triple distillation process that reduces some of the medicinal character often found in many traditional single malt Scotch whiskies. The aromatic smoke is then combined with Teeling's innovative cask aging process, which uses both (1/3) ex-Sauternes white wine and (2/3) ex-Bourbon casks. This single malt is bottled at 46% vol. without chill filtration for a unique expression of Teeling and Irish whiskey. The inspiration for using these casks came from a previous bottling of Teeling's 24-year-old single malt, which was named "Best Single Malt" in the world at the World Whisky Awards in 2019.
