The plot moved at quite a pace. I read it in about 7 hours. The main characters were well developed. The setting is a mining area in Depression era Kentucky. It was interesting to learn about a WPA program that I had not heard of.

Loved this book! Great story about an awesome group of women. Jojo Moyes thoroughly did her research with this one. I liked it more than Me Before You. Definitely worth your time!

I loved the explanations about the hills of Kentucky and realized that my sister could have been one of the helpers if she had lived during that time. Each character is described so well. I can relate to this story since I also love reading -- and writing. My Book Club read this book and all of us agreed that we enjoyed the book.

This book keeps you engaged from the first line. Wonderful story about strong, courageous women who bonded together, despite differences and difficult times. I laughed and cried several times during the story. This is one book you won't want to end. Loved it!
Very readable. Read in basically one go on a rainy Sunday. Loved that it was motivated by a real life setting. Not sure how historically accurate, but seems to giveGood insights into life in a poor coal mining community in south east US in early20th century. Loved the strong female characters
The book was in very good condition and received in a timely manner.I read it because of the book club Im in. Was it compelling - not really. Reading about one daughter with a tenuous marital relationship, another daughter struggling with issues developed around the desire for independence versus love, and the cold disposition of their mother werent really my idea of historical fiction. When the story finally turned to the mothers background, it did become more interesting. Id recommend it for someone who likes romantic, historical fiction.
This book was awesome! My family has roots in the mountains that this book covers. We moved away approximately 48 years ago. The family farm was a huge part of our childhood. My father remembered the packhorse library. I remembered the bookmobiles and eagerly waiting for it to arrive each week.
It took me a bit to get into this one but I'm glad I stuck it out. Such a beautiful adventure with great characters. Some pieces were heartbreaking and some were so beautiful and uplifting. It gave some good insight into modes of BIPOC/female suppression and the collective risks necessary to rise against it.
An excellent depiction of life in rural Kentucky during the Great Depression. Brave women ride horses to deliver books to those who need them most and have the least access. Lots of small town drama and deepening of friendships between the women. Romance and intrigue too. You will be grateful you are a woman in this century.
This was a wonderful book set in mountainous eastern Kentucky back in the 40's onward. It is the story of ladies who delivered books to children and adults in the remote part of the mountains and had to do it on horseback. With them being women, there were a lot of people against it in the beginning. It is based on fact and will hold your attention all the way through. A great book that is well written. I was surprised to learn that the author is from the UK - figured she was a local... LOL
