The Great Dune Trilogy [Book]
Hardcover, 912 pages, published August 2018. Herbert's evocative, epic tales are set on the desert planet Arrakis, the focus for a complex political and military struggle with galaxy-wide repercussions. Arrakis is the source of spice, a mind-enhancing drug which makes interstellar travel possible; it is the most valuable substance in the galaxy. When Duke Atreides and his family take up court there, they fall into a trap set by the Duke's bitter rival, Baron Harkonnen. The Duke is poisoned, but his wife and her son Paul escape to the vast and arid deserts of Arrakis, which have given the planet its nickname of Dune. Paul and his mother join the Fremen, the Arrakis natives, who have learnt to live in this harsh and complex ecosystem. But learning to survive is not enough - Paul's destiny was mapped out long ago and his mother is committed to seeing it fulfilled.

It is the original novel that I read in the '70s. The only beef I have, I was expecting three separate books, instead this one book the size and weight of a house brick arrived. Bit difficult reading in bed at night and I am still under the physiotherapist for the RSI in my wrists. (not really).

While the idea for the item is top notch, the execution is poor at best. Leather had marks. Pages were not glued properly. Glue was leaking on the side of the book. Metal binders on the edges, were clamped very amateurishly (some even having half an inch of space between them and a book). All in all it looked and felt like a high school project.\n\nBut you know, things happen. We all have bad days when we are not 100%. So without too much fuss I contacted the seller, sent the pics of all bad things and asked for a replacement. Seller was apologetic, and they did send me a new item. \n\nI was excited again! Only to find out it had same pool quality as the first one. Not same problems but complete lack of attention to detail. \n\nDo yourself a favor and work with ... MoreWhile the idea for the item is top notch, the execution is poor at best. Leather had marks. I read this series many years ago. I've seen two previous movies that followed the book fairly close. I just saw the current movie, more for the special effects than content. It seemed quite different than my memories, so i purchased this book. It seems I was right. the book and the current movie are quite different. It is a well written work of fantasy.

I read this truly fantastic book some years ago and the images are still imprinted in my mind. Reading it again is just like reading from the first time. It's a great price for this Trilogy and i would highly recommend it.
Dune and Dune Messiah are both very good stories (Children of Dune is a little meh) but this 3 in 1 is large, unwieldy and feels a little too cheap for my liking. If I were to buy Dune again I would by them separately.
My three copies of dune which are in an over used state As I often reread books do not like it when they start to fall apart and to replace three with one volume was good going
This seminal science fiction work is terrific value for money, containing the first three books. Nice to have it back in my hands and on my bookshelf, since my first version I got in the 1980's was never returned by a.....less than honest friend!!
Dune is the greatest Science Fiction novel ever written. It has action, romance, political intrigue and more. It's set in a very well realized universe, and the characters are believable and, for the most part, either likable, or utter bastards who are so well written you can't help but admire them. Or both, in some cases.I first read Dune when I was 12, and, to be honest, I think most of it went over my head. Still, I loved it. Every year since then, I've read it once a year, at least. Each time I read it, I notice something else, get more out of it, enjoy it even more. Last year, my copy fell apart, so I had to buy it again. Which brings me to now.I decided to get this copy, which includes the first two sequels, as it wasn't much more expensive than just ... MoreDune is the greatest Science Fiction novel ever written. I can't really say much more about it without revealing some important spoilers, and so I'm going to wrap up the review here. So, all I can say to you now is "Read Dune. You won't regret it."
