The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

(87 reviews)

It is the world of the near future, and Offred is a handmaid. She is hoping the commander makes her pregnant because she is only valued if her ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she had a job of her own, a husband, and a child, but all of that is gone now.

Wow! I’ve watched the show but reading the book is altogether overwhelming especially in our society today. To think that a civil action can go so off course. Offered is put through your tire in our standards. She is ripped apart from her family and is forced to accommodate a man and a woman that basically abuse her. This is where she learns of her strength. What one human can overcome when put to the test. So horrifying and it just seems like a dire warning for our civil action today. Just how quickly things can go wrong.

Couldn't put this book down!

This story is quite compelling...in fact, I found it hard to put down! The print is large enough for me to easily read with my very nearsighted eyes, the book not too heavy to hold for hours at a time (which is exactly how I ended up reading it-hours at a time). I could see how this story could possibly come true in real life with how the events in the book unfolded. Seen through the eyes of Offred, the world of Gilead comes to life and the way her life changed and how it affected her and the people around her will stay with you for quite some time. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Frightening, in that it could happen!

The author grabs you from the beginning of these women's story. She never let's you go. I cannot wait to read the next book. I felt their fear and despair. The background feels as real as my own town. Being uber rich in her world assures them of getting what they want when they want it, including taking another person and enslaving them until they're of no further use. Scary!

Honestly

I recommend anyone to read the tale. Honestly it was way to wordy for me and skimmed my way through it. It's an especially important read since Roe vs Wade was turned over. Every woman should read it.

Like Politically Correct Brainwashing?

Revolting, Politically Correct Slander: This novel is not a work of genius designed to make you think. It is a politically correct straw man designed to indoctrinate you. Even Hitler's Germany produced no such culture as "Gilead"; indeed, such a society is not envisioned by ANY conservative or Christian group - it's all completely made up. Ask yourself - would ANYONE really act this way? A "Christian" slave state? Come on, America was FOUNDED by conservative Christians. They don't want a world like this any more than atheists, secularists, or Jews do. This novel is just a cover for anti-religious slander. The author's intention is to attack a certain religion - it is hate literature. Here in Canada we are taught to respect other people's religions - everyone should respect others, yes, even aggressive feminists (like the author) should. Handmaid's Tale is an ugly, offensive work of bigotry, the kind of thing Nicholas II and Hitler served up about the Jews before targeting them. Fair minded college profs will expose it, not require it. The thing that really upsets me is that all the positive reviews above don't even see it. Atwood is an embittered male-hater. Is this how you want to think, too? Really? (Also beware the obscene portions - it's not for high school kids)

Loved it!! Bought a Hardback to replace tattered Paperback
2 December 2019

I think this is a great book and should be required reading at some point in Junior High School for students. Adults that haven't read it should also read this book. Although the book is fictional, in essence all of the workers and the handmaids are "present day" slaves. They have no rights or privledges, only a few upper military or political office holders and their familys have power and freedom. This book is an eye opener, if you let it, to help you realize how much we take alot of our privledges as Americans for granted.

Stephen King has got nothing on Margaret Atwood!
12 November 2016

This is one of THE MOST TERRIFYING NOVELS I HAVE EVER READ!!! We, in the USA, just elected- from my perspective-a xenophobic, racist, misogynist. He will soon be the leader of the free world. He actually believes climate change is a hoax perpetrated by Chinese people(??wtf??). He believes he--and presumably, any other male 'star' ) is ENTITLED to sexually assault women. IT'S NO LONGER SPECULATIVE FICTION FOLKS! This novel has been weighing heavily on my mind this week. A part of me wants to flee (to Atwood's country of Canada) , but a part of me wants to stay and fight the good fight. In any case, this is one of the best dystopian tales ever told. In the least it should be thought provoking, and deprive you of sleep. At best, it will spur you to consider your ... MoreThis is one of THE MOST TERRIFYING NOVELS I HAVE EVER READ!!! I hope and pray we can someday truly unite in peace.

The Handmaid's Tale
28 June 2017

Written in the 1980's The Handmaid's Tale depicts a future ruled by religious extremists - men who mostly have a low sperm count and their wives who are barren. They require the Handmaids to bear them children. Offred the lady who is narrating the book reminds us of her past life when she was married with a child. Her child has been taken and her husband presumed dead. She is now the handmaid of the Commander (Fred). Really beautiful writing by Margaret Attwood. Creepy but brilliant.

You have to read it!
21 August 2019

There are more impressive bindings available, but this one is sturdy and tidily printed. The point is that the narrative is so engrossing that you don't notice what you are holding. It is beautifully and unpretentiously written, so that you feel you are inhabiting the I-character and fearing for yourself. At the same time you keep asking, "How could this come about?", then looking at how the world around you has changed this century and thinking, "Yes, it could, that is how it could have started." Rivetting!
