The series is really good, makes you invested in the characters and their journey. Even the appendicies provide interesting additions to the overall story. The struggle is getting through the wonderfully descriptive scenery segments that can last several pages at a time. I appreciate their artistic input, but they can make me feel lost and confused.

When I watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy i was conpletely mindblown at how good it was. Almost every aspect was perfect. Then I started reading the books and got completely obsessed. Even now I still don't understand what made it so amazing. (Well, to be honest, I do mostly what with the rising tension, excellent score, outstanding acting etc. but even that still doesn't suffice.) Even now after I've watched it like a hundred times or something I am still on the edge if my seat. Don't listen to idiots like Khushbuh Jain who don't have a good taste in movies. I love Harry Potter as well but to think you could say Harry Potter is better than lord of the rings? I think not.

Very nice books, binding seems nice. I love the covers although they are not "paperback" and are more of a fake leather material. These books are beautiful and very convenient. They are pocket-sized which is great for on the go, they aren't too small or too big (actually bigger than I anticipated which is a plus). The font size is readable, the only thing I would have to note is that the font size isn't the same throughout the different books. The font size seems to be based on the length of the books, the longer the books are, the smaller the font is (I suppose this was in order to keep them pocket-sized as well as consistent with the sizes of the other books throughout the set). If you have decent to good eyes, this set would be perfectly fine for you on the go ... MoreVery nice books, binding seems nice. I will upload some pics of the font comparisons, books, etc.

Tolkien was a master of his art and way ahead of his time. He set the worlds stage for every fantasy novel to come. The Lord of the Rings is an amazing trilogy of epic proportions. It's great for the advanced elementary school reader and the old granny alike. The first novel is fast paced and action filled and make you fall in love with each of the characters. The rich descriptions of the Middle Earth make you feel like you are actually there. If you have seen the movie I suggest going back and reading the books because there is still a lot that couldn't be included and some things that just can't be captured right on screen. If you have a young reader who has finished Harry Potter and is looking for the next fantasy world to loose themselves in hand him/her this.
The beauty of the Lord of The Rings is how it's written. It is not written as a story set in a fictional world created by Tolkien. It's written as an historical account of the War of The Ring told by Frodo and the fellowship. Tolkien merely found his account and translated into English. That means there's a lot about his world we simply don't know. Like what happened to some of the characters after the war. "It is said that they sailed away" but we don't know for sure.
Ok first of all-i know what most people say about this trilogy. It's dry, it takes a while to get into, most of the first book is about a group of men walking for a long time. I get it. While the writing may be considered "old fashioned" these books are so well written, and truly bring a whole new world to you. The man created not only a map but a full-on language for this series. There is an adventure story, an absolutely terrifying main antagonist, a romance, a best friend storyline, and even addresses internal and worldly struggles. The story is a perfect reminder that even when all seems lost, you have to keep your hopes, and never give up. Keep reading through the "boring walking bit," and you'll find that these books are essentially gold.
I had been hesitant on buying the LOTR series for a while due to not finding the perfect one to come along. When visiting BAM I sat there an felt something calling out- this book was amazing. I love the binding, I love the paper stock they used for this, and the spine is curved so you dont have to worry about creasing. If you're looking for the series [yes, all 3 books are in this] or you want to upgrade from what you have, I highly recommend this one. You wont be disappointed.
After an extensive search, I finally found the book I like at a super nice price. All I want to do is read an easy-to-read print story. Nice pictures and super fold-out maps are cool but not that important to me. Price/need ratio! I first read this and the Hobbit in 1972, small paperbacks, I wonder how I did it...young eyes. The first edition I ordered 1988, ISBN: 0395489326, 3 book set after seeing pro and cons on the print. Even on Youtube. Second edition. I immediately knew I was not keeping this book. The print is dark, thick and then faded in the same sentence. Like bold and regular print mixed! The small letter ‘a’ would sometimes just be a black blotch, along with the small letter ‘e’ with no white showing! Terrible to read comfortably. Awful edition. Do not ... MoreAfter an extensive search, I finally found the book I like at a super nice price. All I want to do is read an easy-to-read print story. On further reviews, I ordered both 2013 ISBN 0544273443 PB AND 2005 ISBN 0618645616 HC. Got them today. The HC has a different display on the dust cover then shown here at Walmart, see Amazon, with a plain black cover underneath; nice white paper; the paperback (heavy, suede cover actually, with nice design that nice on the eyes as you see) has light tan paper. Crisp, clean text. Nice paper. On both. They 'look' like the same 'printed' book in different formats. Page numbers and text are the same in both. I chose the 'paperback'. Very nice book. I like the curves it has, that, like one commenters' wife noted, he said, it does look like a bible!! The curves give it a 'style' that's different from a normal square hard cover book. And saved money in the end, too. The print still is a little small for my liking, but I can read it comfortably with the cheaters because the printing is crisp and the tan paper is easy on the eyes. I'm 67. I also bought the Green book of The Hobbit. 1973, ISBN # 0395177111. Excellent edition, leatherette covers, large, crisp print. Some nice pictures with a large map. Not foldout. If I could read 'Under the Dome', twice in a row, I liked it that much, I can read this size print, too!
This book is beautiful. I'm very happy with my purchase. Just be careful because it's not a true hardcover. The cover is firmer than a paperback, but it's still rather flexible, like one of those faux leather books. It's not leather, but I don't really know what it it. It has a velvety feel to it.
Absolutely amazing. One of the best books in my collection, the binding is elegant and the integrity of the original works is superb. The appendices serve as an amazing addition that any Tolkien fan could get lost for hours in learning about the history and lore of the LOTR universe. Even if you have the trilogy already please pick this beautiful edition up as well. The binding alone is well worth the slot on your shelf. The one complaint to be made is there is no bookmark string, which would have looked fantastic on this edition, but beyond that nitpick this is a divine edition of one of the greatest fantasy epics ever written.
